Alice hadn’t slept well, since the Red Queen. But she supposed she didn’t have it as bad as Sada. She watched her lover toss and turn, and a scream seemed to echo through the room, though there was no sound. Frightened, Alice shook Sada’s shoulder. “Sadako! Wake up, luv, you’re having bad dreams!”

Sada had been dreaming dark things, to be sure. She was at the bottom of a well. At first all had been black; the man had tried to rape her but given up when he’d felt her ... differences. But then he’d strangled her until she passed out and tossed her into an open well. That was usually what she dreamed - the inky blackness, the echoing screams, ripping her fingernails off trying to climb out.

“Alice?” Sada bit her lower lip, looking at her girlfriend. “I - was I dreaming again?”

“Yes. It was just the dreams.” She pulled Sada into her arms. “Terrible ones, I know. But that’s all they are.” She remembered her spates of madness when her worst dreams came. She didn’t wish that on anyone.

He tried to rape me and then he choked me because I was biologically a boy and I never told anyone and then it was dark. Forever. Her words were a fast tangle, but she wasn’t speaking, just thinking. Albeit loudly.

Alice pressed a hand to her head. Sada’s powers made it point, but she didn’t really mind. She liked the thought that they could talk without words. There was so much she couldn’t say. So much she dreamed about she could never put into words.

Then she blinked.

“You’re a boy? How curious!” She took Sada’s hand and kissed her face. “You’re okay. You’re here and it’s not dark and it won’t be dark forever.”

“I was in my dreams,” Sada murmured. “I’m not here.” She smiled, kissing Alice and wrapping her arms tightly around her. “I love you, you know. If I didn’t have you, I don’t think life would be as lovely. How are you?” She knew that the world’s curious transformation had taken quite a bit out of her of late.

“I’m glad you’re a girl, no offense. I’ve only been with the two men.” And only Jim had been voluntary. Even that had freaked her out, wheras Sada did not. “Though I think I’d love you regardless. I’m..okay. Seeing my dreams come to life..killing the Queen....”

It was odd.

“I’m glad I’m a girl too. It’s ... I don’t know, I like sleeping with boys, but I like that you’re not upset that I’m a boy.” She wrapped an arm around Alice’s shoulders. “Your dreams were oddly beautiful. If we both go to Wonderland together, I’d be okay with that if I had you.” Sada was a bit of a romantic that way.

“Wonderland was all in my head. So if you can talk in my head, then we can go there any time.” Alice cupped Sada’s face.

I like your head. Sada giggled as she thought it, leaning in to kiss her gently.

I like yours better, Alice replied, kissing her softly. A year ago, she’d been new in this country, fresh out of the nut house, and in a flat talking to a corpse. Today she was living with a movie star, making love to her near nightly, and a lot more sane feeling than she ever thought she would be. Inexplicably, she started to cry. I don’t want you to lose your mind, I love you and I’m so happy that I think I would die if I lost you.

Sada blinked. Oh, Alice, I’m not going to lose my mind. And if I do, I know a beautiful woman who will help me find it again. She ran her thumb over Alice’s cheeks, trying to close her eyes and let Alice see how much she meant to her. Sada wanted to be with Alice every day. She wanted to grow old with her, watch her change, watch her grow. One day they’d die together, and Sada did not fear that.

“I just have fears, sometimes,” she admitted out loud. “You’re the first person I’ve ever had a relationship with. Only my second lover.” Jim counted, the murderer did not, obviously.

“I worry what the papers say.”

“I don’t read the papers. I don’t care. I love you. I’m going to get married to you someday, and the papers can ... well, do whatever they want. It doesn’t matter.” Sada smiled, kissing Alice’s nose.

“I hope I can be a good wife,” Alice said. She’d always enjoyed the domestic things, though. As long as she got to explore, and travel and visit places, anyway. She had itchy feet. She still liked to take the bus places. Just yesterday she’d wound up in San Francisco, and then gotten on the bus right back. She had an interesting conversation with an elderly gentleman.

“I know you will be.” Sada couldn’t help but grin at Alice, curling up close. “That reminds me, I have to go to a silly movie opening, would you like to come with me?” Sada kissed along Alice’s neck, smiling to herself.

“I’d love to!” Let the paper talk, Alice would show up looking like...Alice. Probably with a top-hat on. Because she was Alice.

That made Sada grin. “Good. Better everyone knows I’m yours sooner rather than later.” She wrapped her arms around her girlfriend, liking that they were both pretty well understood that they were going to get married.

Sada’s cell phone rang. Alice looked at it, giving it a dirty look. She tried to ignore it. “We should do some horribly public and embarrassing proposal.”

Reaching over, Sada turned the phone onto silent. “Want to call the newspaper and announce it?”

The phone continued to buzz.

Alice tilted her head. “What if we do it at the movie opening? Off-handedly about a summer wedding.”

Sada reached out to turn the phone off. “Why summer? That’s so far.” She pouted out her lower lip.

“When would you want to do it, then?” Alice asked, curiously. “what season are those pretty pink leaves?”

“Sakura blossoms? Winter. Want to do it soon?” She grinned, bouncing a little on the sofa. “Next month?”

Alice tilted her head, and then nodded. “Yes. I will marry you next month. At least in the heart. We do have to wait for silly laws to catch up.”

“We can still exchange rings,” Sada smiled, kissing Alice’s forehead. “Or go somewhere else for a little while.”

“I’d like that.” Alice’s eyes were getting waterlogged. “Can we do both? I’d like a holiday.”

“Of course we can do both. I’ll tell my agent that I need some time off. Where would you like to go?” Sada gently wiped Alice’s cheeks, grinning before kissing her.

“....would London be okay?” Alice sounded almost shy. “ I haven’t been there in over a year.”

“Of course it would. I've never been there. I can think of no better tour guide.” Sada grinned, picking up her phone and ignoring the missed calls for the moment. She texted her agent with a request to call her back ASAP.

There were about four voicemails, in fact!

Alice smiled happily and clung to Sadako. "You're wonderful. This is wonderful! When should we go? Spring might be good, before it gets too humid..."

“Mmm, we should do that.” Sada was familiar with humidity and liked it as little as her fiancée. “If you like, we could make our way to Tokyo as well. But you’d be famous there.”

"I'd be famous? In Tokyo?" Alice looked puzzled. She couldn’t fathom the whole ‘idol’ culture over there. "All I did was capture your heart!"

“And that makes you famous.” Sada laughed, grabbing her iPad and bringing up her fan page. There was a paparazzi snap of the two of them out at lunch on the front page.

“...Oh. What does it say?” She’d been learning Japanese but it was easier to learn it rather than read it. She leaned in, snuggling against Sada.

“It says that I’ve been seen with a mystery woman more than once. I wouldn’t be surprised if we went to Tokyo if magazines tried to interview you.” She grinned, snuggling back, kissing her gently.

“I’d tell them to bugger off,” Alice said sternly. She started to giggle into Sada’s kiss. “Are you feeling better? Do you want me to make you some tea?”

“I’ll always want tea.” Sada felt much better. No matter what had happened in the dreams, she had Alice when she was awake. And ovaries.

"I love you."

Sada's phone rang again. Alice shot it a look, a little nervous. What if her agent couldn't find the time? If that was her agent.

“I love you too and oh, bother.” Sada picked up her phone. “Hello?”

A cheerful voice on the other end answered in Japanese, "Hello! Sadako? I'm glad I got ahold of you I have some news and a question!"

Sada responded in kind. It is, and ... cousin?

”Yes!” The voice at the other line sounded excited. “I’ve got some video shoots coming up and I wondered if you wanted to be in them.”

Alice watched the exchange curiously, her fingers tracing patterns along Sada’s stomach. She smiled wickedly and her hand darted lower.

Sada didn’t scold her girlfriend. Instead she moved her legs a little wider, biting her lower lip. ”Oh! Of course I would!” She put her hand over the receiver when she moaned to herself.

Grinning, Alice moved her fingers enthusiastically. She'd had a lot of practice, but mostly, she was always enthusiastic.

"Yay! I'll be visiting too! The shoots are in California! I'll be shark diving, and wing walking and then there's the really cool stuff!"

Gasping, Sada moved her phone away from her mouth. “I’d like that very, very much. I’m sorry, I have to go.” She was rocking her hips against Alice, laughing at her daring.

"okay!" the girl on the phone said, giggling. She hoped her cousin was okay.

Alice nuzzled at Sada, and reached over to push the end call button as she sank in two fingers. "Who was that?"

“My cousin, you naughty thing.” Turning her head, Sada snogged her hard, pulling her closer and whimpering loudly.

“What did she want,” Alice continued, though her voice had gotten breathless. She kissed Sada as she gave up on normal conversation.

Sada moved her hand so she could do much the same to Alice. “She’s a music star, wants me to be in some of her things.” Her eyes closed tightly, and Sada arched her back.

Alice gasped, happily. “That sounds like fun!” She found it impossible to shut down her own body so she could concentrate on Sada.

It will be, I think. Sada moved her fingers faster, smirking. You should come with me.

Alice did, and she cried out, body shaking. You..mean ...video?

Just to watch. Sada liked that she could hear what Alice was thinking, and she tried just implanting images, of every dirty thing she’d ever wanted to do to her girlfriend.

Oh my god. Alice squeezed her eyes shut. Several images in particular stood out to her. She spoke, voice raspy and tired. “All of those, lets do all of those.”

She actually had emotional tears in her eyes. She couldn’t say why. But she did.

We will. You can cry. I know sometimes when you feel loved, it’s overwhelming. Sada understood a little bit better after the nightmares.

Panting, Alice clung to her girlfriend. “..hell, I was trying to comfort you and you turn it all around...” She laughed, hoping Sada didn’t have plans today. She wasn’t ready to leave the bed.

“This is very comforting,” Sada grinned. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

She laughed again and closed her eyes. “We chase away each others’ nightmares.”

“It’s why we love each other. We look out for one another.” Sadako smiled, kissing Alice lightly. “I’ve never really had anyone take care of me because they wanted to before.”

“I want to, believe me, I do. I enjoy it,” Alice said, half mad out of needing to make Sadako sure of that.

“Likewise.” Sada knew, and she kissed Alice again to prove it.
