Cadence was at the Farmer’s Market, looking for some fresh fruits and veggies. She’d been staying at Kurt’s place more and more, and she was tired of living off of the things she’d left in the pantry. She wanted to surprise him with a big meal tonight, stir fry, salad, fruit cobbler for dessert. She wanted to thank him for being so supportive, being so understanding.
She’d filled a couple of bags with things, but found that she just couldn’t stop shopping. She was standing in front of a booth that had honey for sale, debating if she actually needed honey, or just wanted some.
Deryn, who was the coordinator at this Farmer’s Market, had a habit of just wandering around with a clip board and looking around. She didn’t have an exceptional amount of work to do once things were up and running, after all.
Noting the girl with all the bags, who was looking at jars of homemade honey, she stood behind her for a moment. Finally, she piped up. “It’s the best. If you’re curious.”
“Yeah?” Cadence asked, turning around to look at Deryn with a smile on her face. “I was just trying to figure out if I should buy some.” She glanced back at the stand, then to the blonde once more. “It’s the best, you say?” She felt like she was buying out the whole farmer’s market.
“The best,” Deryn agreed, hugging her clipboard to her chest and giving an exceptionally bright smile. “It’s locally harvested. Organic. And tastes awesome on toast. What more could you want?”
“Honey on toast?” Cadence asked, cocking her head to the side. “I’ve never had honey on toast.” She said, giving the girl a grin. “But maybe I should try it.” She stepped into the booth and looked at the different jars, then picked one out. “I’ll just get a small jar.”
“Good choice,” Deryn beamed brightly, as if she were making commission on the honey, herself. She wasn’t. She just liked good things. And anything that was close to candy was good with her. “And you totally should. Better than jam. Although we have some of that here too, I think,” she appeared entirely too thoughtful about that one.
“Ooh, jam. I could do jam.” She gave Deryn a grin after paying for her honey. “I’m stocking my boyfriend’s house. He doesn’t have a lot of food there, and I love to cook.” She explained.
“Oh really??” Deryn seemed pleased as a peach about that, which was a little funny because these girls didn’t even know each other. But Deryn just wanted to be happy for everyone, honestly. “That’s the CUTEST. And you came to the right place!”
“Thanks.” Cadence said, beaming and blushing deeply. “I’m a little worried that I went overboard.” She added, sheepishly. “I cook for him every time I’m over, but I don’t know if we’ll be able to go through all this food.”
“Honey doesn’t go bad,” Deryn pointed out, and then peered a bit into the bags of other stuff she’d purchased. “And if you make soup, you can totally freeze it!” SAGE WISDOM.
“Ooh, that’s a good idea.” Cadence said, giving a bright grin. “I love soup. And if I freeze it in little portions that he can thaw on his own...” She loved making food for Kurt. Making sure that he ate well, even when she wasn’t around.
Deryn was nodding her head emphatically, blonde locks bobbing up and down wildly before she decided to abuse some exclamation marks. “Exactly! Nothing goes to waste! Perfect!”
Cadence gave a laugh, nodding to the girl. “I’m Cadence.” She said, attempting to shift all of her bags onto one arm so she could hold out her hand for the blonde girl to shake.
“Deryn,” she announced, shaking the other girl’s hand with obvious enthusiasm. “Do you need help with your bags?”
"I think I can manage," cadence said, grinning. She really could use some help before the newly purchased honey took a nose dive and smashed on the pavement.
Deryn decided that she ought to help anyway. She took a few of the bags from the girl, ever so helpful. “Did you drive? Might be good to put some of this in your car.”
“Oh, thank you,” Cadence said, looking a little relieved. “I did. It’s over this way,” Cadence said, nodding toward the parking lot on the left. “I’m pretty much finished with my shopping, I think, so I’ll head back to Kurt’s place after this.” She was excited to stock his cupboards.
Deryn followed the girl with a handful of bags and a giggle. “Seems good. And if you forgot something, we’re not going anywhere,” she said, cheerful.
“That’s good to know.” Cadence beamed. She pulled out her keys. “Normally I go to the Mexican Market over off of main,” she explained. “But the selection of fruits and veggies here is always so much better. And it’s only going to get better from now until Summertime.”
Deryn giggled her agreement and nodded all the same. Once the trunk was open, she helped load the bags in -- nearly putting her clipboard in there too, but remembering it was hers at the last moment. “Yeah, we have the best fruits in the summer,” she agreed.
Cadence nodded, then put the bags she was carrying into the trunk, too. She closed it and turned to Deryn with a smile. “Thank you for the help. I really appreciate it.” It was always nice to meet another generous soul. “I’ll see you around the Market?”
Deryn practically bounced in place, grinning brightly. “Yep. I work here, so I’m sure I’ll see you next time. Oh! Speaking of, I should go back to work! I’ll see you later!” And then she was running off, long blonde hair bouncing behind her.
