WHERE: Deku's
RATING: Low
STATUS: Complete
With everything that had been going on with Alyssa lately, Damian wanted to do something nice for her and knowing that she liked to tend to the small garden in the backyard, he’d decided to see if he could find something to give her for it. He’d googled plant nurseries in Orange County and found one in Garden Grove then figured out what buses to take and headed out to the nursery. He wasn’t really sure what he was looking for, but he hoped that someone there would offer to help him, because he knew absolutely nothing about gardening.
Reaching the nursery, Damian started walking around, looking at the various plants and pots and was quickly overwhelmed.
Navi was there working - Pete was in his office, and she wanted to visit her plants. She was in the process of cooing to some begonia sproutlings when she saw a mystified looking teenage boy walking around. Straightening up, she smiled and walked over to him. Navi was petite, her hair in a high ponytail and wearing a pair of cutoff shorts and one of Pete’s buttondowns as it was big enough to accommodate her baby bump. Her Keds were a bit dirty, and she somehow looked like she belonged there.
“Hi! Are you looking for a certain plant?”
At the sound of the woman’s voice, Damian turned and ran a hand through his dark hair, looking obviously confused, “Ah, not exactly. I actually don’t know what I’m looking for.” He knew that, that sounded pretty lame, but it was the truth, “I mean, I’m looking for something for my girlfriend. She has a garden in the backyard and I wanted to get her something, but I don’t really know anything about flowers and plants.”
Oh, Navi wished she could let her wings out. She had to bounce instead, clapping her hands. “That’s pretty much the sweetest thing I’ve ever heard! My husband hasn’t even bought me a plant!” She shook her head as she patted her rounding stomach. “Do you know if you want to get her a flowering plant, a plant plant, or a plant you guys can eat with?”
It was hard to believe that a woman so small had so much energy and in a way she almost frightened Damian a tiny bit; not that he’d admit that to anyone. “Um. Maybe a flower. Yeah, I flower.” Damian wanted to give Alyssa something pretty and colorful instead of something that was just green with leaves. He thought that she’d definitely like a flower better.
Navi nodded, thinking to herself. They were alone in the greenhouse, and she decided to risk it for sake of comfort. “Okay, flowers. Hey, have I seen you online? The valar thing? The dream doohickey?” If he said yes, the wings were coming out. Holding them in was getting harder the more pregnant she got.
When she mentioned Valarnet, Damian nodded, “Yeah, you probably have. I’m Damian.” He couldn’t place her face, but there were so many people on Valarnet that he had probably walked right by some of them and not even known it. “So, you’ve had weird dreams too?” So far Damian had just had the one recurring dream about the various training he’d had from the League of Assassins.
“I’m Navi! And you don’t mind if I let my wings out, do you?” She shivered happily when her wings fluttered, and she purred a little to herself. “Sorry, just between the little one and holding those in, I was all sorts of uncomfortable.”
As the wings emerged from the woman’s back, Damian’s blue eyes widened and he couldn’t help but stare. Really, he shouldn’t have been quite so shocked, considering Alyssa had a vial of water that turned into a magic bow and an actual honest to god witch was after her, but seeing something like that was still extremely shocking, “Oh, yeah...no. It’s cool.” He knew he was staring, but still couldn’t help it and hoped Navi wouldn’t be offended.
“Fairy,” she grinned, an explanation. She turned so he could touch them if he wanted. “I really hope my baby is a fairy too, but she’ll be half. Dunno if she’ll get wings or not.”
She moved to pick up a rose bush, a pretty one that she thought would be hardy. Really, it was hard to mess up roses in Southern California.
Damian didn’t touch them though. He had already stared, he didn’t think that she’d want some strange kid touching her wings. If he’d known that she wouldn’t have minded then he might have, but he was still trying to process the fact that there was a fairy standing there in front of him, “How would you know? I mean, would you know right away?” He wondered what she’d thought when wings had suddenly sprouted from her back.
“Nope! But between my husband’s abilities and my own, I think she’ll be special.” Navi smiled, turning to hand him the plant. “Maybe she’ll like this? It’s romantic, but not overly so. Not smushy. You don’t look like you do smushy.”
Damian nodded as he listened to Navi, suddenly picturing a baby with fairy wings, which made him smile a little bit. When she handed him the rosebush, he frowned slightly, “Well, we’ve only been dating for like two weeks. So, I don’t know about roses and it’s a small garden.” It wasn’t that Damian didn’t think that Alyssa would like the roses, but he felt like he was looking for something different.
“Well, roses are creeping plants, so it’d go up a wall if she wanted. Hmm. Pansies are good. Only romantic connotation is that they stand for remembrance, but I doubt she’d know that. And these are the most cheerful plants in the whole place.” Navi ran the blooms over her cheek, smiling when they giggled.
Damian ran a hand through his hair again as he watched Navi with the plants. She really was pretty much exactly what one would think of when they thought of a fairy, only bigger. “Are pansies the ones that come in different colors?” Of course he knew that lots of flowers came in different colors, but looking at the flowers that Navi was holding, he was pretty sure he’d seen them in multiple colors in various places before.
Navi nodded. “Yup! I have these purple ones and white ones and red ones and pink ones. Do you know what colors she likes? Or is that a too hard boyfriend question?” Her favorite color was easy - she was almost always wearing blue, and her wings were blue. Pete had it easy.
Damian was definitely going to have to ask Alyssa what her favorite color was one of these days, but for now, he was pretty confident that he could choose ones that she’d like, “I don’t actually know her favorite color, but I think I might take a chance with the purple ones and pink ones.” They were nice and bright and that’s exactly what he wanted.
“It’s a good choice. Do you want any pretty pots or fertilizer or anything?” Navi bounced toward the cash wrap, beaming at Damian. “You’re a pretty good boyfriend, you know. It’s a sweet thing for you to do this for her.”
“Um, I don’t think so. I think she has fertilizer already.” Damian had checked out the garden before he’d left to make sure that there was room for more flowers and he was pretty sure that Alyssa had everything she’d need to replant them. He couldn’t help but smirk at Navi’s compliment, “Well, she’s had some pretty crappy stuff happen lately and I wanted to do something nice for her.”
“And that’s what makes you a good boyfriend, silly.” Navi smiled as she rang him up, tucking her wings back in when she saw someone else enter the store. “She’s lucky.”
Damian shook his head, cheeks flushing ever so slightly, “No, I’m the lucky one.” He was pretty sure that he’d think that for as long as they were together. Whether it was a few months or years or forever; Damian would always consider himself the lucky one.
Navi couldn’t help it. “Awww!” She flailed her hands a little, covering up her mouth. “People in love is awesome and it’s adorable and - augh, why are you so cute?”
Damian shrugged, smirking. He didn’t refute what she said about them being in love even though he was still trying to figure out how one knew when they were in love. “I’m just doing what feels right.”
“Well, it’s probably working. And it’s good of you.” Navi smiled brightly. “I’m just glad you seem happy. Let me know if she needs any help with her plants, these or the other ones.”
“Thanks. I will.” If Alyssa liked the flowers then Damian was definitely going to come back for more in the future and would probably even bring Alyssa there, so she could pick out whatever she wanted for the garden.
Navi would’ve hugged him, but the kid seemed sort of squirrelly. Instead, she moved to help a little kid out who was about to try to eat dirt while his mother didn’t pay attention to him.
