John, wanting to check in on his friend, lifted his cell phone and hoped the signal would punch through. Whatever was happening outside, it was not good, Not good at all.
He dialed Sam's number and swallowed, praying his friend was okay and not out in the madness.
“Come on, Sam, pick up...” Worry was in his tone. He and AJ were staying in and he was hoping his friend was able to do the same.
Sam caught the phone call just after the second ring. “Hey, John.” He said. “What’s up?” He’d been out with Deryn and was in a pretty good mood.
“Well, Have you looked outside this morning? Nor looked on the Valarnet? The, ah, landscape has had some redecorating.” Now that he knew Sam was safe, John smiled and relaxed into the call.
“Oh. Yeah. Pretty weird stuff, isn’t it?” Sam said, unable to stop grinning. He was smitten, nothing could phase him. “No big deal.”
John blinked, then chuckled. “Okay, give. What’s got you grinning so loudly I can hear it from here?” He was glad of it, he was just confused.
Sam laughed. “You can hear my grin? How does that work?” He asked, then leaned back in his chair and put his feet up on the desk.
John chuckled. “The tone of your voice, young man. I can hear it from here. Something has you very happy.” He hmmmed. “Money, job, or a woman?” Guesses, really, shots in the dark.
Sam shook his head a bit. “I had no idea that my tone gave away so much,” he was still grinning. “Really, now. If it gives away that much, shouldn’t you know already?” Even with the strange Wonderland outside, their lives were continuing on a lot like normal.
John snerked. “I’m good, but I’m not that good, Sam.” John chuckled. “I’m glad you’re happy, no matter what the cause.”
“It’s a girl.” Sam said, leaning his head back and staring up at the ceiling. He had a sign there on his ceiling that said “get back to work!” It made him grin even more. “Deryn.”
“A girl, huh? Deryn? Wait... Deryn. A.J.’s friend? That’s awesome!” He was blown away. “When did you two start talking?”
Sam paused. “Wait, Deryn and AJ are friends?” Since when? “We bumped into each other at the Farmer’s Market. Like, literally. I just seem to run into her all over the place.” He said, the smile coming back to his voice.
“AJ has a stall there sometimes. At the market. And they’ve known each other for at least a few months.” He hesitated, then nodded. “Possibly related to their dreams.”
“Wow. I had no idea.” Sam was kinda excited about that idea, actually. It meant they could double-date. It’d be really difficult if their girlfriends didn’t like each other. Not that Deryn was his girlfriend. But maybe eventually. Hopefully. “That’s great, though. We don’t have to worry about them hating each other.”
“Very true. We should all get together when this is over. Maybe a barbecue at my place as it gets hotter?” that would allow for relaxing, eating good food, and talking and mingling.
“Yeah, absolutely.” Sam said with a nod. He didn’t really know if things were going to go that route with Deryn. He’d be a little upset if she decided that she didn’t like him as much as someone else--like what happened with Tonks. But for some reason he didn’t think that would be the case. He was starting to assume that things were looking up for him in the world.
“Whatever happens, man, I am glad to hear you are doing good.” John smiled, relaxing. “If you do go out in this crazy though, be careful.”
“We went for a walk earlier. It wasn’t so bad.” Sam said, giving a little shrug. “I’ll be extra careful.” He made a mental note to put together a backpack with rock salt, a silver dagger, holy water, and a shotgun.
John smiled. “Good.:” He was glad Sam had not had a bad experience yet. Maybe he was just less exploratory.
“Well, I’m gonna get back to work.” Sam said, still grinning. “And maybe send a text message to a pretty girl.”
“Good for you. Have a good day, Sam.” And he hoped his friend would.
