“I don’t think you’re as heartless as you let people think.”
Who: Kate & Bellatrix
What: Getting to know one another.
When: Before Bella went all psycho on Alyssa
Where: Bella’s house.
Rating: PG-13. Ish. Mentions of sex. Mostly just talking.
Status: Complete!
Kate and Bellatrix had settled into an arrangement of sorts. It always started with a request. And it always ended with Bella kicking her out.
But they hadn't quite reached that point in the evening yet. No. Right now, Kate was curled into Bella's side, and the rest of the world was still vaguely hazy.
Lazily, she drew an invisible circle on the other woman's stomach, attention seemingly focused on that point of contact. "So...What was it?"
“What was what, lovey?” Bellatrix asked, looking down at Kate. She had a bored look on her face, now that the fun was done, but she didn’t mind cuddles. Truthfully, she secretly craved them.
"Whatever it was that made you such a bitch."
Bellatrix threw her head back and laughed. “Do you want the sob story? Maybe it’s the money. Maybe it’s my family’s religion?”
"And maybe you were just born this way." She half shrugged. "But I don't buy it."
She looked at Kate, then shrugged. Her father was dead, what did it matter? “My father was a pervert. Good enough for you?”
Kate went back to tracing her circle. “You didn’t have to answer.”
“You wouldn’t shut up about it,” she snapped.
“Right.” So she’d touched a nerve. Oops. “Sorry I asked.”
Bella’s fingers tangled in Kate’s hair. Yanking hard.
Her stubbornness was likely the only thing that kept her from yelping, the suddenness of it catching her off guard. “Trying to make a point?”
“Yes. Like why the hell you’re still here.”
“You haven’t kicked me out yet.”
“I might.”
“But you haven’t.” Her gaze skimmed over the other woman’s body, finally landing on her face. “And I kind of like being here.”
Bellatrix rolled her eyes, and then stretched for her, showcasing the curve of her breasts and the line of her stomach.
Kate watched her quietly for a minute, taking her in, reaching out to trail her finger across her stomach again. At least it seemed they were back on steady ground. For now.
"It doesn't just have to be about the sex."
“Why not?” Bellatrix sat up a bit, staring at her.
"I didn't say it couldn't be. Just that it doesn't have to be."
“You’re not the person I love,” Bella said, pointedly.
Wait. Back up. "What?"
“What?” Bellatrix rolled her eyes. There was sex, and then there was love. There wasn’t much in between.
"Wait. Let me get this straight. We can have sex or we can be in love?" She felt they'd skipped a few steps, here. "We can't just...like each other?"
“There’s fucking and there’s love-making,” she clarified.
"I think I see why you don't have many friends." Okay, she was mostly assuming. But Bella didn't seem the type to draw people in.
“I have one!” The witch snapped. Lulu was a friend. Okay, she loved her nearly as much as she’d loved Caprica.
"You fuck her too?"
“...Once or twice.” Not enough times for Bella’s taste.
"Then why can't we have it both ways?"
“Because we can’t.” The woman was annoying her. She tugged harder at Kate’s hair. “You’re good in bed. And your voice doesn’t irritate me. Isn’t that enough?”
Kate winced, mildly insulted. "Funny. I like you, anyway."
“That’s because you’re an idiot.”
"You could've just said 'thank you.'"
“Thank you?”
“Yeah. Most people take I like you as a compliment.” Look who she was talking to. “But you’re not like most people, are you?”
“No. I’m special,” Bellatrix said, pulling her closer.
“Well, it was. A compliment, I mean.”
Bellatrix laughed, and pulled Kate on top of her. “Keep going.”
“I like being with you. Is that such a bad thing?”
“Yes. You have no idea what you’ve gotten yourself into.”
“If we’re just fucking, why do you care?”
“Because it could end up with you hurt.”
As far as Kate was concerned, that proved her point. “I don’t think you’re as heartless as you let people think.”
Bellatrix snorted. “You have no idea. None.”
“Maybe I’m wrong. But why else would you care?” She slid her hands up her sides. “You aren’t obligated to show concern for someone you’re using. Not when she knows why she’s here.”
“I could hurt you,” Bellatrix whispered. “Make you feel pain like you’ve never known.”
“But will you?”
“Maybe. I might.”
“Is that really what you want?” Always smart to test the crazy woman’s limits, Kate.
Bellatrix stared at her. “Keep this up and it will be.”
Kate studied her a minute before shaking her head. “You aren’t heartless. At least make sure I deserve it, first.”
Bellatrix shook her head, her fist balling up.
She started to pull away. “Maybe I should go.”
“Maybe you should.” There was a cold anger in her eyes.
She’d known what she was getting into, how this arrangement was meant to work. But something went wrong. She was actually starting to care what Bellatrix thought of her.
“You know, I would have stayed. If you’d asked.”
“When have I ever asked? I don’t want a security blanket.”
“I never said it was for your benefit.” Sometimes she liked the company, and sleeping alone didn’t quite feel natural anymore.
She sighed. “Fine. Stay.”
That effectively derailed the search for her discarded clothing, and she paused at the edge of the bed. She hadn’t actually expected that to get her anywhere.
“Are you asking?”
“Yes?”
“Then I’ll stay.”
“Good, now shut up and kiss me.”
Sliding back across the bed, she happily obliged.
