Verity sent Darcy a text earlier. It’d been a while since she’d seen her friend, and she was looking forward to getting together and going out for a coffee. She wanted to hear everything about what Darcy had been going through, and she was looking forward to getting to dish on all the goings-on in her life, too.
She was finishing up her shift at For the Lulz, finishing restocking some t-shirts against the back wall, and whistling while she worked. Though, not that song.
Once Darcy was done at Stark Tower, she grabbed her coat and practically skipped out of the building. All she wanted was to get out of there. No more work. Getting in her car, she headed to the coffee shop so that she could hang out with Verity. Some coffee, some relaxing and catching up? Totally perfect. It was music to her ear.
Heading to For the Lulz, she went to find her friend and found her restocking some stuff. “Hey lady.. you almost done?”
“Just about!” Verity said with a grin. She glanced at the clock and realized that her shift had officially ended a few minutes ago. Perfect. Nothing between her and coffee and a little girl talk. She finished putting the last t-shirt back in its place, then dusted her hands off and turned to give her friend a quick hug in greeting.
“Hiya, Sweetie. How was work?” Verity asked. “Weird how Stark Tower turned into a giant mushroom, right??”
Darcy hugged Verity back with a grin. “Great.. it was pretty decent. Can’t complain, though I was totally ready to get the hell out of there.” She’d just had one of those super awkward bad work weeks. “Doing PR when there was a crazy LSD thing going on made work harder than usual.”
She nodded. “Yeeaaaah not to mention that I spent the entire week in a giant mushroom. And I wasn’t even high. It was kind of stupid.”
“I can imagine. I was here, working, for most of that strange weekend. What a trip, right?” Verity said, shaking her head. “We should make t-shirts to commemorate.” She added, breaking into a little grin. With a giant mushroom on it. I’ll make a point of bringing that up to Fred and George.”
She led the way up to the front counter and grabbed her purse. “Let’s go have coffee and relax for a bit. There’s a coffee shop down the block from here.” She turned to wave goodbye to the twins and head out of the shop with Darcy in tow.
“A trip is putting it mildly. I mean it did kind of feel like someone had taken a giant LSD trip.” And not even a good one. One of those bad trips. Very gross. “I survived a giant LSD trip without being high printed on it? As long as it’s not tie-dyed. Those things are hideous.” Darcy made a face.
Giving a wave to the twins, she followed Verity out of the shop and down towards the coffee shop. “Besides all the craziness, what have you been up to?”
“Work. Hanging out with my boyfriend. Trying to keep my mother calm.” Verity said, giving her friend a grin as they moved out of the shop and down the street. It was a nice day for a walk. “After the Blue Flu she’s a bit crazy about wanting me to move back up to San Francisco.”
“Mmm must be nice.. the boyfriend part, not the mother part. That’s not nice at all.” Thankfully she didn’t see much of her parents at all. It was easier that way. Darcy ahh’d a bit, knowingly. “At least she cares? Better than having ones that don’t give a shit at all, I guess.”
“The boyfriend part is really nice.” Verity was head over heels in love with Oliver, and it showed. Whenever she talked about him she got this ridiculously sappy expression on her face, and her voice went soft and mushy.
“And yeah, she cares. I should count myself really lucky every single day at how much she truly does care. Enough to call a lot, check in. She also knows I’ll give her the truth about my brother, too.” Verity said, smirking softly.
Darcy made a face, but not because her friend was happy. She wanted to be happy for her friends, she really did. And she was for the most part. If they were happy, she was happy. But she was really lonely. Not to mention that her former ‘boyfriend’ wasn’t really a boyfriend and had disappeared.
She didn’t say anything though, just frowned. “Everyone has the right to bitch about things. The truth about your brother? What’s up with your brother?”
“Oh, he’s so busy. And he doesn’t tell my mom all the things that happen to him. He plays hockey, you know, so it... it’s not exactly a desk job.” In truth, Verity’s mom didn’t really need to hear everything... but she wanted more than Chace, Verity’s brother, was willing to give her. So Verity filled in the blanks.
“And she and I love to gab on about my niece and nephew.” Verity spent a TON of time with her niece and nephew. They were almost like her own children in that she bragged about them and showed off pictures to complete strangers. But at the end of the day she could give them back to their parents.
Darcy ahh’d a bit, and nodded knowingly. Moms tended to worry about their kids when they were doing something potentially dangerous. Not that her mother would ever do such a thing but whatever. And her sister.. well let’s not talk about that. “That’s cool. I wish I had nieces and nephews.” Even if she had them, her sister would be bitchy about it. “Better to give the kids back, huh?”
“I love being able to give them back all hyped up on sugar at the end of the day.” Verity said, grinning. “You can borrow mine, of course. If you want to have a niece and nephew for the day.” She was more than willing to share.
Verity held open the door to the coffee shop so they could go inside. “I think I might have a cookie with my coffee.”
That made Darcy laugh and shake her head. “That sounds like something I would do, totally.“ If she ever got to babysit, that was exactly what she was doing. “Sure why not? The closest I’ll ever get to having my own.”
She followed behind Verity and looked at the menu. “That sounds good. I think I want a brownie.”
“We can take them to the museum or something sometime. Give their parents a break.” Verity said, giving Darcy a grin. She stepped into the shop and straight into the line to order her food and drink.
“Ooh a brownie sounds good. Hmm.” She turned to look in the case where they had the treats. “Well, there’s a chocolate cookie. I’ll go for that one.” She ordered. Mocha and cookie. Yum. Then she paid and stepped aside to let her friend order.
“Sure, put me down for a museum trip. As long as it’s not actual art. That kind of makes me glaze over and not pay any attention. I like science and stuff though.” That was much more fun, at least for her. If Verity wanted to see art, she could suck it up.
She ordered after her, and then paid. “So.. I had to taze a dude, during the whole crazy thing. What did you get up to?”
“Nah, one of those children’s museums where you get to play with stuff and learn.” Verity beamed. “Though, the learning is secondary to the actual fun part.” She added, smirking a bit as she waited for her coffee to be finished.
“During the weirdness? Nothing. Worked. Stayed home.” She shook her head a bit. “Nothing nearly as interesting as tazing someone. What happened?”
Darcy looked relieved that she didn’t want to go look at art. “Thank god. Yeah I like those kinds of museums. I don’t want to stare at something and wonder what the artist was thinking. It’s not my thing.” Though maybe she just didn’t have enough class for it. Ah well.
“Well I was at work when it turned into a giant mushroom. Then this guy.. he came to get me. Promptly told me I had a big ass, and was hoped I wasn’t fat and really heavy. Just a lot of .. mean things. And he wouldn’t shut up, so I tazed him.” She shrugged a bit.
“...what?” Verity asked, giving a little gasp. “Are you serious? Who was it? That’s not on.” She said, shaking her head. “That’s... well, he deserved the taze.”
“Yeah tell me about it. His name is uh.. Renji. He’s got bright red hair. And he’s a total spaz.” Darcy grumbled, clearly a bit upset about the whole thing. “I mean I know I’m curvy but like he was all I hope you’re not heavy.. and then he called me heavy. And then tried to backpedal and it just.. ugh. He won’t leave me alone either.”
“Bummer.” Verity said, frowning a bit and shaking her head. “You could always taze him again. Maybe then he’ll get the idea. Unless he likes that kind of thing.” She added, breaking into a smirk. Her coffee was set on the counter, so she picked it up. “You wanna sit for a few in here and eat our snacks?”
“I should, shouldn’t I? I mean I’m not fat. I’m amazing and guys are awful.” Bah. Why couldn’t she just meet someone who liked her, and wasn’t a jackass? “Maybe I should just be a nun.. or a lesbian. But I bet women aren’t any better.” Darcy nodded and went to sit down at a table. Yum brownie.
“You should.” Verity said with a nod. She moved over to the table and sat down. “And you are. You’re beautiful.” Verity smirked a little. “Women aren’t much better. I’d say we're a little better. I mean, A woman would never dare tell another woman that she was heavy.” She started in on her cookie.
“Thanks. I’m feeling very uh.. awkward and awful at the moment. I mean I get dumped and ignored for no reason, and now this happens? I really can’t catch a break. I’m fucked. And not literally either.” Darcy was just having a bad time, and it seemed to always get worse lately.
“Aw, hun. I’m sorry.” Verity said. She climbed up from her chair and moved to wrap an arm around her friend’s shoulders. “If you need to get laid, we can work that out.” She said, teasing. “My boss, Fred, he probably needs it as bad as you do.”
Darcy shook her head. “Nope, don’t need to get laid. I got laid. I got laid and he likes some girl from his dreams. Soooo. Yeah. There’s that. I mean I don’t even know if I liked him. I wanted to sleep with him. But he’s not interested in anything more than that.” She leaned against her friend. “I don’t need my ego stroked, I just don’t want to be alone anymore. And I’m constantly alone. It sucks.”
“Damn. I’m sorry.” Verity knew what it felt like to be alone. Even with her boyfriend, she sometimes felt very alone. “You should come to my place and have a sleepover. Wine, chocolate ice cream, rom coms. What do you think?” Hopefully something like that might help lighten Darcy’s mood?
“Sure, a sleepover sounds like fun. We’ll eat a lot of ice cream and drink a lot of booze.” Darcy smiled a bit. Maybe that would help cheer her up.
