She'd barely noticed it at first, only turning her eyes toward the small article after she'd finished the front page. It was a crime item, with only a few paragraphs. Last night, a group of students from UCLA attempted to flee police in an action that has left one of their number dead. The students began the altercation with the police, who then attempted to arrest them and a physical response was required when two male students resisted arrest.
For a moment, she couldn't see. Sif kept reading, clutching the paper so hard she heard it rip. There were reasons why Apollon or some of their friends might resist arrest, if it was flagrant enough. One of the students was felled by a blow to the head and subsequently died at UC Irvine hospital from his wounds. God, she felt ill. Was this really what was going to end one of les Amis before they'd even done anything?
The very last sentence, though, changed things. The deceased has been identified as Brian LoCicero, 20, of San Juan Capistrano.
Sif rose from her desk, pushing the paper away from her. Her head was swimming and she needed to go somewhere without people - the empty office nearby would do. It had nothing but a desk and a couch in it.
She stumbled the few steps across the hall, opening the door and closing it with as little noise as she could manage. She quietly sat on the couch, put her face in one of the decorative pillows, and wept - muffled, but not silent, as though her heart might break.
