The room was dark. Ben flicked the light switch. He sighed, and it was long sigh that seemed would never end.
Through the window, he could see the Langson Library of UCLA Irvine. Yes, he was only a few minutes from home. Tomorrow he would literally be able to roll out of bed and go to work: he'd teach a class and then his office was a walkable five blocks away. His wife, meanwhile, would be driving herself to work, and he wouldn't have any idea when she came or went, when and what she would eat, or how often she would curse his name. A lot, he figured. He deserved it.
On Sunday nights, they sometimes watched the Food Network competitions, because he enjoyed them, and she tolerated them well enough. He wondered if she would watch something different instead, now that she had the house to herself.
Ben unpacked his suitcase and tried to make the room feel as close to home as possible. He put his clothing into drawers, he arranged his toiletries neatly around the sink, he placed his gun case carefully on the nightstand.
He wondered if he really had gone crazy.
What have I done?
