Jane took a long pull from her can of coke, as she looked up at the sky. She finished the can and threw it in the trash can she had brought up here, checking on the progress of the coverage from NASA about Asteroid 2012 DB14. She had just buzzed Thor into the building and was waiting for him to come up to the roof. She had to admit to being conflicted about this visit; on one hand she knew it was going to be painful to see him and, knowing them, flirt with him, but she also needed someone to talk about all the physics news that had come about this week because she was bursting at the seams.
Thor came in, hauling his bag and looking around, smiling. He saw her and waved a hand, grinning. “Jane! How are you?” He moved toward her and she would find herself hugged. “How is the tracking going?” He was eager to know. He had some small hours to spend here, before he would go home again and then to work the next morning.
She hugged him tightly in return, rationally knowing it wouldn’t help her crush on the man but excited to see him anyway. “I’m doing ok, I guess,” she gave a little shrug as she reluctantly pulled back from their hug. She looked up at him, her breath catching in her throat and forcing her to look away with a shake of her head and a heavy swallow. “I uhh....” she cleared her throat. “The tracking’s going well,” she waved a hand at the laptop she had hooked up to a large flat screen monitor in front of the recliners with the feed playing on it. “Australia’s just started giving their stream,” she told him quietly, smiling as she tucked her hair behind her ear.
Thor had glanced away and glanced back at her at the pause, then felt worry for her. Was he making things worse by being here? He had sensed her attraction to him, and he felt a certain amount of remorse that he could not return her affections. The part of him that was his dream self would always love her, but he was not that man. He was in love with Natasha and he smiled sadly as he nodded to her.
He looked over at the work, then and smiled wider. Eying the stream and the recliners. “Shall we? And you can catch me up while they start theirs?” He had been working hard this morning and missed the first part of it.
“Sure,” Jane smiled and moved over to sit on one of the recliners. “Umm...you want a drink?” she thumbed the ice cooler she had brought up with her that sat behind her recliner.
He smiled. “Surely. How have you been doing?” He was curious, of course. She was a good woman and a good scientist.
“Coming right up,” she leant behind her and took a can out of the cooler, passing it over to him as she sat up. “”I’m ok thanks,” Jane smiled, nodding, perhaps a little too emphatically. “Had a good week to be honest. Caught up on the work I missed thanks to the flu, caught up with Darcy aaaaand...got an open-ended internship with Mr Stark and access to his particle accelerator!” she grinned brightly, thrilled to be able to tell someone who would actually get how huge this opportunity was.
He took the drink and opened it, then sipped, blinking at her emphasis, but watching her and listening. She seemed bouncy, and that was good, right?
“Really? Excellent! That sounds like the chance of a lifetime! Congratulations, Jane.” He was sure she would do amazing things with it. He clapped her shoulder gently. “I’m jealous of the things you will do and see.”
“Thanks! It really is! I’m so excited!” she beamed at him. “I can finally get some actual results for my thesis!” she told him, relief flooding through her. “I’m going to carry on as Professor Carter’s TA since I’ve finished some of my extra classes early and then maybe in a couple of weeks I’ll talk to Mr Stark again and see what sort of thing he wants me to do,” she shrugged and gave a little laugh. “We didn’t really get round to talking about specifics.”
Thor grinned. “I’m sure you will do marvelous work. Between your thesis and working with Stark, I am quite sure you will change entire worlds.” Thor nodded. He had faith in her. He pointed at her. “This could not have happened to a better person. You deserve the chance to explore and reach far out beyond what is known and into the realities of what could be.” He nodded again.
“Thank you,” she told him quietly, looking down at the floor again. She felt so confused these days. She seemed to thrive off every bit of positive attention he gave her, but rationally she knew it to be so wrong to want it. Jane relied on her common sense, on logic, but when it came to Thor...it seemed to completely abandon her and she was left feeling completely out of control. She hated it. “Umm...so tell me more about this film of yours,” she led, hoping to distract herself from her own thoughts.
“Sure. The one I am working on now is an action adventure movie, with lots of explosions and some drama and we’ll be shooting in several other cities and countries. It is both exciting and a little scary, really, because it’s my first starring role, and I almost feel unprepared.” He rubbed his face gently and nodded. “And I want to do well, because I want to do more movies. I’m just not sure if I am meant to be a star.” It sounded fun, but was it?
“What on earth would make you think that? You’re a gorgeous, charismatic, talented hunk of a man, how could you think you’re not meant to be a star? Jane asked disbelievingly, mouth engaging before her brain again. When she realised what she’d said, she could feel the blush rising in her cheeks and she quickly turned her face away to look at the computer monitor and fiddle with some settings. “All I’m saying is, you more than fit the bill for a movie star,” she told him quietly.
Thor looked down, blushing. “I am... well, thank you, Jane. A lot.” He gently patted her shoulder in thanks. And he sighed. “I don’t feel like I am... half those things. But thank you.” He forced a smile. “If more of my fans feel even half as much as you do, then I might make it yet.”
Then he glanced at the monitors.”Tell me about your set-up here?”
Jane smiled at him sadly, If other people felt half of what I did you’d be over-run. She sighed and shook her head slightly, “You’ll be great, don’t doubt yourself.” She cleared her throat and turned to the screen. “Well all I did was hook up the monitor to the laptop and link up to the live feed from the Goldstone telescope in Australia. I’ve been making friends with someone who works there for the last year or so and she let me access their server,” she smiled, proud of what she had achieved, but with a sudden feeling of sadness at knowing he would walk away from this meeting and probably not think about her like she thought of him.
Thor smiled to her, and nodded as he watched what she did, listening to her. She was incredibly smart, and he was glad to know her. He could easily see why his dreamself would be so besotted with her, even if he did not feel the same. He was still quite proud to be her friend, though.
“It is good to find friends, and to make connections. Of such things are the greatest of events begun and made.” He nodded. “”I am sure it will be an interesting show.”
