Sam was curious about this place. Curiouser and Curiouser. He was terrified at first, but after getting her text he was starting to see this change as beautiful rather than scary. He was taking precautions, being very careful, but he was pretty excited to go exploring with Deryn. She was beautiful and smart and strong... and though she was tiny and a little clumsy, Sam was growing more and more fond of her as the days went by.
He showed up on time, and looked around for her.
“Sam!” Deryn called out, waving a little wildly from a seat a few feet away. After a bit of climbing, she’d perched herself on top of a mushroom cap that was about four feet off the ground. Sure, for most people it might not have seemed such a large feat, but Deryn was only about five feet in stature anyway and climbing was kind of difficult for a girl who fell over when she was standing still. “You made it safely,” she seemed pleased about that. While it was beautiful out here, she wasn’t stupid enough to think there couldn’t be some hidden dangers.
She was brave enough to go out in them though.
Sam stopped in his step at the sound of the voice, and looked around. Finally he saw her on top of a large mushroom. It may have been a mailbox or something at one point. He wasn’t sure. It seemed like it was mostly a transformation of current buildings and whatnot, rather than new things having appeared.
“I did. And you seem to have acclimated well to your new surroundings,” he said, amusement in his voice as he moved closer. How did she know these mushrooms weren’t hallucinogenic? Or poisonous? He tried not to worry, as she clearly wasn’t worried.
“It’s a bit like a theme park,” Deryn said, looking up and around her at the mushrooms and vines and the strange wonderfulness of everything. She hadn’t thought to be worried about poisons, but so far she felt fine so she wasn’t too concerned.
“Help me down?”
"Oh, of course." Sam stepped over and pulled his hands from his pockets to lift them up toward her. He could either take hold of hers to help her down, or take her waist and lift her down. Her choice, really. His hands just sort of lifted up and were available to her. He was tall enough to make a good ladder.
Deryn giggled her weird, musical little laugh and scooted forward enough on the mushroom so that she could settle her hands on to his shoulders before half jumping off and into his arms. It was all sort of magically perfect -- like a good fairy tale.
Sam couldn’t stop grinning. He lifted her from the mushroom and helped her gently to the ground. Even though the world had been turned upside down, Sam found that being with Deryn made things feel both normal and exciting at the same time. “There.” He said, once she was safely on her feet. He let his hands linger at her waist for a moment, but then pulled them back. Ever the gentleman, Sam Winchester. He cleared his throat.
“Where are we exploring?”
What a gentleman indeed! The blonde gave him another smile (she was always giving those away), and then shrugged her shoulders playfully. “Anywhere,” she decided, even as she straightened out the collar and lapels of the little corduroy coat she was wearing. “I don’t think it matters, since it’s all different, right?”
Sam loved her smiles. He couldn’t get enough of them. “Let’s just... start up the block, then.” He said. He glanced back and forth along the street, not really sure where the block began or ended, and motioned with a shrug of his shoulders, as if to say “...this way?”
Deryn glanced in the direction he motioned in, and tilted her head to the side a little curiously. Since it seemed as good a direction as any to go, the girl gave a little nod and a giggle before starting off in that way.
“Strange and lovely,” she murmured after a moment -- even as she took care not to fall flat on her ass as she stepped over some large roots. “I feel like if we walk far enough, there might just be a place for a tea party.” That had been her favorite part of Alice In Wonderland.
Speaking of that ass, Sam couldn’t help but let his eyes trail down to it as she moved past him and over some roots. He stepped forward with ease and brought his hand down to take hold of her elbow. He could help her past them, and make sure she didn’t fall. “So long as we’re not accosted by a larger-than-life rabbit or sleepy mouse.”
Nodding her thanks for the help over things, the blonde gave another little giggle before responding. “I’d want to ride a giant rabbit,” Deryn said in a tone that was quite serious. Because really though, who wouldn’t want to ride a giant rabbit? Or even share tea with a tiny sleepy doormouse? Especially if they could talk. Frankly, Deryn would do quite well in a fantasy world like that.
“I’m not sure I’d want to ride that giant rabbit.” Sam said, shaking his head. He was pretty sure that the Hatter, the March Hare and the Doormouse were supposed to be high on opium, or something. Besides, if they came with this strangeness? He wasn’t sure it would be a nice, fluffy, white rabbit. More like something with rabies.
His hand on her arm tightened a little.
“Maybe not,” Deryn said, stepping closer to him, because his grip on her arm was a little tight. She was sure he meant well. Still. Pressing her lips together for a moment, she looked up at him. “Are you okay?”
“Hmm? What? Yeah.” Sam cleared his throat. “Yeah, I’m fine.” Maybe he was holding her arm a little tight. He let go for a moment, and trailed his hand down her arm to take hold of her fingers. “I really could go for that cup of tea.”
It took her a moment to connect the dots on that one. Tea? When had they been--oh. Yes. The teaparty!
“Well.” she said, thoughtfully, “let’s see if we can’t find any.” Her tiny fingers curled around his, warm and reassuring.
And he was reassured. He gave her a smile and squeezed her hand. “Let’s.” He said, then turned to explore in a new direction. He wished he had a shotgun or a bag of rock salt on him. Mostly because it’d make him feel more prepared.
---
It took a bit of wandering -- high and low around mushrooms and vines that moved of their own accord, but the two of them reached a street that looked mostly normal -- well, in comparison to everything else anyway. Still holding Sam’s hand, Deryn looked around, curiously.
Sam was confused. He turned to look back behind him at Wonderland, then to the normal street ahead. “...have we reached the end?”
“Maybe?” Deryn said, but it was clear she didn’t know. Maybe it was just a reprieve. Or... something. She scrunched up her nose in consternation, and gave a shrug. “Let’s find out.”
“Lead the way.” Sam said, then followed along behind her as she moved forward. It was possible they reached the county line--though Sam didn’t know where the Wonderland stuff ended.
So she did. Glancing this way and that at the normal buildings, Deryn decided she felt very much like a spy on a secret mission. Which was pretty cool, actually. Even if the secret mission was finding tea. A block or two in, she stopped and looked to the left. Starbucks. Always open. Apparently. A laugh bubbled out of her. Because who even stayed open when half the town was a fairy tale?
Starbucks, apparently. Sam gave a laugh, too, though maybe for a different reason? Maybe the same. He wasn’t sure. “Are we having our tea party here?” He asked. That would have been a very different story, if Alice ended up at a Starbucks instead of the Mad Hatter’s place. Or maybe Starbucks was the Mad Hatter’s Place.
Well, they did tend to just make up names for sizes of drinks. Maybe it was a bit mad. “I think we should get them to go,” Deryn said. “Can’t be a proper tea-party unless you’re sitting on a mushroom, right?” A pause. “Unless you’d rather stay here.”
“No no.” Sam said, shaking his head. “I think your plan is perfect. We’ll grab a couple of teas and go sit on a mushroom.” He paused. “If you think these mushrooms can hold us both.” He was a big dude. Could the mushrooms support them both?
They could find out. He led the way into the coffee shop and ordered a couple of teas.
D also found it prudent to buy the place out of cookies. Because cookies were a very important part of a balanced diet tea party.
As they made their way back to the Wonderland, Deryn found herself immensely pleased about things. She had a great person to hang out with, and she was basically living out an amazing dream.
They found a low to the ground mushroom with a sturdy stem and both sat on top of it with no trouble. Sam might have been tall, but he wasn’t exactly the bulkiest of men.
Wiggling her feet over the side, Deryn sipped at her tea and then gave a happy sigh.
Sam stole a cookie. Since it was tradition for them to steal food from one another. He sipped his tea and sat beside her, enjoying himself very much.
