Deryn wasn’t exactly sure what had happened to Janelle to have made her ‘disappear’ for a week or so, but had taken the other girl at her word that she was fine. Moreso, she had been tickled pink when invited to the park again. This time not for roller skating (although ice cream was not out of the question), but instead the viewing of a new puppy!
It probably could go without saying, but Deryn LOVED puppies.
Waiting on the same bench she had been when they’d first met, the tiny blonde kicked her feet back and forth and hummed a happy tune to herself until Janelle showed up.
Laura took a cab this time, because she could. It was a pretty nice feeling, actually. To just be able to make that decision on her own. She had Ginger on a leash, and the puppy was darting around the back of the cab, panting eagerly.
He tugged Laura out of the cab as soon as she opened the door and she laughed, leaving her fare and tip behind. The puppy was sniffing everything, which gave Laura the chance to locate Deryn. She grinned at the other girl and waved, gently tugging the puppy until they were both headed in the same direction.
Ginger was a small thing at the moment, with a reddish coat and floppy ears. Laura loved him already, and he was obviously very happy. “Deryn! HI!”
Deryn jumped up to greet her friend, running the last few feet of distance so that she could throw her arms around her in a huge hug. The blonde was fairly tactile, and had actually quite missed Janelle. “Hi,” she said as she squeezed -- and then looked down at the little dog. “Ooohmygosh look at him!”
Laura hugged her tight, glad to see Deryn again. She grinned when the other girl complimented her puppy.
Ginger wagged his whole back end and eagerly yipped at Deryn, running back and forth in front of her. “Deryn, this is Ginger. He’s so cute!” She was proud of Ginger’s cuteness.
“Yeah he is!” Deryn didn’t really need to agree out loud, but how could she not? The little puppy was still small enough to be in that super cute, curious, sniff everything and walk funny stage. And those were seriously the best kinds of puppies. The blonde squatted down to pet him. “Hi Ginger!” she greeted.
Ginger was all over Deryn, licking her face happily. Laura giggled at them both. “Awwww. That’s so cute!” She grinned brightly, glad her friend and her dog were getting along. “How have you been?”
“Good,” said Deryn, who was fighting back the urge to just pick up the puppy and put it on her head (because... that was what you did with puppies?). “I’ve been having fun. Work, candy, dates.” Her smile was practically toothy.
“Dates?” Laura asked with extreme interest. “Really? You have to tell me about them. Who with, someone cute?” She really hoped so. Deryn deserved to be as happy as she was. Which was very happy, maiming excluded.
Deryn gave an emphatic nod, her blonde locks bouncing with her head, even as she scratch the little puppy’s tummy. “Yeah. He’s cute. Really tall.” Which Deryn seemed oddly happy about, considering she was less than an inch over five-feet tall. “His name’s Sam.”
“Awww, that’s so sweet.” Laura said, a big grin on her face. “Did you meet him on the valarnet?” She wondered if everyone on the network had crazy dreams like hers.
“Kinda? Yeah, I guess I did.” She scrunched her nose up thoughtfully and gave a shrug of her tiny shoulders. She met people all over the place and sometimes didn’t recall how or where. “What about you? Besides Ginger.”
“Oh, well, my girlfriend helped take care of me when I was hurt, and I’ve been playing a lot of video games. We fed ducks!” Laura grinned, remembering that date fondly. “Then we got Ginger, and that’s been my week.”
“You have a girlfriend?” Deryn asked, eyebrows raised. She didn’t sound like she was judging Janelle or anything, just quite curious. “That’s adorable.”
“Yep! She was an Olympic gymnast.” Laura waggled her eyebrows at Deryn as she said it. “Her name is Jubilee. She’s amazing.”
Deryn, who was not particularly good with innuendos, just smiled at that comment. Being an Olympic Gymnast was probably awesome. She could probably walk on her hands whenever she felt like it!
“Jubilee? That’s a great name.” She stood, having her fill of petting Ginger for the time being. “I’m glad you’re happy. Really really. I was a little worried about you, Janelle.”
Laura hugged Deryn. “I’m so sorry I worried you. And, uh, please call me Laura. I don’t like to tell people I just met my real name. But now we’re friends!”
“Oh,” said Deryn, who was a little shocked at that, because, well, she was a trusting sort always. “Laura,” she repeated, even as she still hugged the other girl. Then she shrugged and gave a huge grin. “Okay! That’s pretty!”
Laura was pretty embarrassed, and felt bad for initially lying to Deryn. “Do you want to walk around a little bit? I didn’t get to play on the beach last time.” She didn’t want to focus on the bad things, she wanted to have fun!
“Of course,” the blonde girl bobbed her head in agreement, and moved toward the beach, turning to walk backward so she could watch the adorable way Janel--nope--Laura’s puppy ran around polkily. It would be extra funny on the sand.
Laura grinned, and kept an eye out to make sure Deryn wasn’t about to fall. “It’s so pretty here. I’m always a little sad to go back to Irvine. I like it there, but there’s no beach.”
Clasping her hands behind her back, Deryn gave a nod of agreement. “Luckily, though, Orange County isn’t really that big to travel through. So it’s easy enough to visit. But it might be nice to just live over here. In one of those little apartments above the shops?” She pictured waking up to sunlight in the window, and looking out it and just seeing beach and ocean and sand and happy people. It was a nice thought.
Laura smiled at the idea. “Oh, that would be nice. Coming outside in the morning to the smell of the ocean and the sound of the waves? It would be heaven.” But waking up anywhere with Jubilee was like that. “Oh, Fire hydrant coming up on your right.”
“Ooh,” said the small girl, spinning around on her heel and giving a wobble (as if she may just fall anyway), but then successfully avoided the hydrant. She let out a musical giggle. “Thanks.”
When they came up to the sandy part of the beach, she slipped off her shoes so she could stick her toes in the warm sand. Basically, it was the best thing.
Laura held her hands out to catch Deryn if necessary, and giggled in response to Deryn’s laughter. “Anytime.”
The puppy barged out onto the sand, and fumbled around. Laura giggled and took her shoes off as well. The sand felt so warm on her feet. “Mmmm, this is nice.”
“So pokey,” Deryn’s voice was already high, but at the sight of a tiny puppy trying to hop its way through sand was enough to raise it another octave a least. It was so cute. Too cute. The cutest of all things.
“I knoooow.” Laura said with a laugh. Ginger didn’t mind, when Laura laughed her tried to race over, barking happily. “Awwww.”
Plopping down in the sand, Deryn scooped the fine stuff slowly through her fingers. She clearly wasn’t worried about the mess she’d make of her clothes. “Will he get much bigger?”
“I think so. He’s from the pound, they don’t know how big he’ll get or anything.” Laura picked her poor little puppy up, and he wiggled to lick her face. “I hope he doesn’t get too big. I live in an apartment.”
It was really hard to tell with dogs how large or small they would end up being, so Deryn only gave a little nod before laying back in the sand -- the tiny granules might be a problem for her hair later, but for now it was comfortable. She wanted a dog, now. “I’ll have to show you Mr. Spock, some time.”
“Mr. Spock? Who’s that?” Laura sat by Deryn’s head and put the puppy down on the sand. She began braiding it, to keep herself busy.
That was nice. Deryn smiled at Laura, and the sunshine in general. “He’s my parakeet. He’s blue. Very pretty.”
“Oh, I like birds, too. They’re so pretty, and I’ve heard they can be friendly. Do you have a picture of him?” Deryn had such nice hair. Laura smiled as she played with it.
Deryn quite liked that Laura was playing with her hair, so only moved a little bit when she searched her pockets for her phone. She had tons of pictures of her bird, because Mr. Spock was the best pet ever. Or, well, the only pet she had which made it the best pet ever. She flipped through the photos until she found a good one of Spock sitting on her head.
Laura looked down at the bird and squeed. “Oh my goodness, you’re both so cute!” The puppy bounced back over and began barking excitedly, because Laura was excited. She giggled and took a flip flop off, tossing it away for him to fetch. “I’d love to meet your bird.”
“Next time.” Deryn promised, excitedly.
