It’d taken long enough. Sam finally had a chance to get together with Deryn. His schedule was finally clearing up a bit, leaving some time. He wanted to give her a full day’s attention, not just a night. Not just texting, not just half-assed. He showed up at her door at the arranged time and knocked. Dressed casual, but nice. Not too sharp, not in dirty jeans, either.
Was he ridiculous that he was a little nervous? He kinda liked her. The girl who was half his height.
There was a bit of a crashing sound from behind her door -- but when Deryn answered not a minute later, she had a big smile on her face, even as she looked up to greet him. “Hello,” she said warmly -- a tone that very much matched with her yellow sundress. She liked bright colors. “How are you?”
Sam was alarmed at the sound of the crash. He was about to knock again when the door opened. “Hi.” He said, his face fading from an alarmed expression to a confused one. “I’m... good. How are you? Are you okay?” He added, “I thought I heard...”
“What?” said Deryn, eyes wide and bright. Then she paused and looked over her shoulder before giving a laugh. “Oh. It’s nothing. I just tripped over a cord and -- you know how that goes.” Probably, he didn’t quite as much as she did. “Nothing broke,” she said with a smile before pausing. “Oh! Do you want to come in?”
Actually, he didn’t really know how that went. Obviously not as much as she did. Then again, his size made his falls more than little crashes. He brought down buildings with his missteps. He returned her smile, relieved that she was okay, and that nothing was broken. “Oh, sure.” He said, nodding once. “Are you... is this the start of our fun day?”
“Are you” what? she wanted to ask, but thought better of it, as Sam seemed a little nervous, and maybe he’d just misspoken. People did that sometimes, she supposed. “Definitely, it is the start of our fun day,” she said with a sage sort of nod and a bright, cheery smile. “You’re right. Inside isn’t fun. Let’s go out instead.” She grabbed her purse from a nearby table and then literally hopped out of the threshold, locking her door behind her. She was really excited.
"Sure." Sam stepped back and let Deryn through the doorway. He cleared his throat. "You look really pretty today," he said, trying to sound casual. She did, though. She always looked pretty.
It never really came off as casual when a guy told a girl that they looked ‘really pretty’ -- not truly. But Deryn liked it either way, and smiled brightly in response -- even standing up just a little straighter. “Thank you,” she said, tone warm. “You too.”
Sam laughed. “I look really pretty today?” He asked, grinning. “All right, all right, I’ll take the compliment.” He turned to lead the way away from her front door.
She followed, with quite a bit pep in her step, giggling to herself even as she did so. It might not have seemed natural to call a man pretty, but Sam kind of was, in his own right.
“What should we do first?” She asked, looking up at the sky and squinting thoughtfully.
“You’re the one in charge,” Sam said, unable to wipe the smile from his face. Maybe she had that effect on him. He couldn’t help smiling when he was with her. “I’m trusting you to show me a fun day, remember?”
“Yes,” said Deryn, adjusting her messenger bag style purse over his shoulder and then looking over at him to give him a reassuring sort of smile. “You chose wisely,” she said, teasingly. “This will be fun. Let’s get something to eat first. Do you like sushi?”
“Excellent way to start the day.” Sam said, almost slipping and using the word ‘date.’ But wait, was this a date? Or were they just two friends having a fun day together? “Referencing Indiana Jones. Very adventurous.” She had good taste. Obviously. “Who doesn’t like sushi?” He asked. “Do you know a good place?”
Obviously, yes, she had good taste. She smiled brightly and grabbed hold of his hand, leading him down the street. He had a car, she knew, and she had transportation of her own. But sometimes wandering and exploring was just the better way to do things. More adventurous.
Deryn dragging Sam around was a bit akin to a small puppy leading it’s owner about, but she seemed pretty self assured. “Of course I know a place,” she said. “I know all the places.”
Sam was more than happy to be led along by the tips of his fingers. He might not have been, had it been anyone other than Deryn. But he found he kinda liked being dragged around by her. She was fun, and happy, and pretty. “All right.” He would have said, ‘lead the way,’ but she was already doing that.
“Did you find the good candy on sale?” He asked, making small talk. The grin spread across his features again as he referenced the text messages they sent a week ago.
“The chocolate was mostly all gone,” Deryn said, sounding a little sad about it, even as they turned a corner and moved further up the block. “But there were plenty of those little cinnamon hearts. You know what I’m talking about? Those are good. I got a bunch.” And she’d eaten a bunch too.
“Those are good.” Sam said, giving a little nod. “They’re really good on oatmeal.” He added, nodding, letting her ‘drag’ him along. He was very much a willing participant on this adventure. “Shame about the chocolate, though.”
“On oatmeal?” Deryn quirked an eyebrow and gave him a funny face. Weird. She’d never heard of something like that. Although now she kind of wanted to try it.
“It’s okay. Chocolate isn’t the best part anyway. You can get chocolate any time.” She slipped her hand more into his so that they were walking side by side instead of her just dragging Sam along.
“You should try it.” Sam said, giving her a smile. Their pace was lazy and gentle, and Sam was enjoying being dragged along. Though, now it was a lot less like dragging and a lot more like two people walking side by side. “That’s true. But doesn’t it always taste better coming out of a heart-shaped box?” He asked.
Definitely a date. He turned his hand a little and took hers a little more fully.
Yes, definitely a date. But Deryn had known that. She’d known that since the first time she’d met him in that restaurant and eaten all his chips. But she wasn’t in any rush. Why should she be?
“I dunno,” she said, looking up at him. “Does it? Maybe this takes experimenting?” She scrunched up her nose, making a face that clearly said he needed to buy her some chocolates.
She stopped, abruptly -- and since he was holding her hand, so did he. “Here we are!” And they were: the were standing right in front of a little restaurant that hardly had a proper sign, beyond “Sushi! We are Open!”. Sometimes it was the little hidden away places that were the best.
When she stopped, Sam stopped. He didn’t want to bowl her over or drag her along behind him. And he would, too. He had more inertia than she did. “This place?” He asked, looking up at the building. It didn’t look like much, but then again, the great places rarely did.
“All right.” He reached forward and opened the door with his free hand, letting her go in first. His other hand was still in hers for as long as she wanted to hold it.
----
Sushi had gone well -- servers didn’t speak English, but seemed to know and like Deryn-- who was clearly a regular. She and Sam had pointed at the pictures of things they wanted on the little menu and then when the food came out, the diminutive girl had spent a good portion of the meal stealing food from Sam’s plate and giggling about it. She made up for it by offering him some of her own.
It wasn’t really stealing. She thought she was being sneaky, but Sam was willing to part with the food from his plate. The sharing of the food was a good thing. They both got to try new and interesting things, and spent a good portion of the meal laughing and talking.
Sam insisted upon paying, and left a generous tip.
Once they were up and on their way again, they wandered down the streets in companionable silence for a while. Deryn had a fun sort of skip to her step -- as she was never one to really be able to stand as still as most, even when she was walking. After a while, she spun round in a little circle until she was walking backward to face him.
“Truth or dare?” She asked, suddenly.
“What?” Sam asked, a little surprised by the question. He hadn’t played Truth or Dare since... probably since Undergrad. Man, that made him feel old. “...Dare, I guess.” He said, giving her a smile.
Deryn, of course, had been hoping very much for him to pick Dare, because she was actually quite awful at the game and could rarely think up good questions. She rose her head, looking quite coy (for her, anyway). “I require a piggy back ride,” she told him, because it was hilarious. And also because he was huge and she was tiny and she was positive he could manage carrying her on his back for a bit.
Sam turned to give her a gape. “A piggy back ride??” He asked, sounding incredulous. Though amused. There was a grin creeping through that he couldn’t stop. He gave a nod, then stopped and stepped in front of her with his back to her, going down on one knee. “...climb on.”
The girl gave a mad giggle, even as she climbed on, wrapping her arms around his shoulders and around his neck. “Happy!” She announced, because she tended to enjoy voicing exactly what she was feeling.
Sam gave a laugh once she was in place, then started skipping--Skipping--down the street. He hadn’t skipped in... probably a decade. Maybe more than a decade.
The skipping was great, Deryn decided. She let out a happy little yelp, and pressed her cheek into the curve of his neck, holding on tight. He must have been having fun, right? No one skipped if they weren’t. Mission: success.
