Ariel's world had been flipped over so many times that perhaps she should have seen that the revolutions for what they were: a spiral, funneling down a long, dark drain. At night while she slept, she lived beneath the waves of the ocean, dreaming of a world where she had fins instead of legs. During the day, she lied about her age and attended college. She lied about where she was living and slept in Nemo's bed.
It wasn't possible that it could have gone on forever.
But her father's rage was beyond normal proportion. There was fire in his eyes and lightning in his grasp. For the first time in her life, Ariel could hear the sound of her own screams, until her father muffled them with his thick forearm. He dragged her down the beach. In his other had was a golden triton, and it glowed with an otherworldly magic as storm clouds collected over the ocean.
The girl flailed wildly, but her thin limbs had no power in them. She was no match for her father's brute strength. She'd spent so much time worrying about the sea witch that she'd ignored the magic of King Triton. Her father had become a madman. He bellowed strange threats in the name of "her safety" that made no sense, claims that he could "protect her from the world" and that there was some means of escape that Ariel didn't understand. Her mind felt like the churning water crashing on the jetty. Was her father going to kill her here? Was this the violent end to her short, uneventful life?
She prayed that Nemo would appear and prayed that he would not. She didn't want the last thing she saw to be her father tearing her love apart.
