Remus was gazing up at the full moon as it shone bright in the night sky when he heard the screen door open and his mother stepped out onto the porch, “Remus, come in and get washed up for dinner.” Remus might have been young, but he was extremely perceptive and it was obvious that his mother was nervous about something. She hadn’t wanted to let him go outside when he’d asked, but she’d eventually relented on the condition that he stay close to the porch and didn’t talk to any strangers. Remus didn’t think that any strangers were going to come into their backyard, but he had agreed and taken a book with him outside. He’d read on the steps of the porch until the sun had begun to go down and had been staring up at the stars and the moon ever since.
“Okay, mummy.” As Remus got to his feet there was a rustling in the bushes nearby and Remus felt his mother tense nearby, but before she could grab him to pull him into the house something shot out towards him, snarling. Remus screamed as pain exploded through his shoulder and he fell back onto the porch. He heard his mother screaming for his father and then there was nothing.

“We have already taken every precaution to keep both Remus and the other children safe on the full moon,” Remus stood just outside the den, peering around the doorframe at his parents and Professor Dumbledore. His parents had told him to go to his room while they’d talked to the man in the purple suit, but Remus had wanted to hear what they had to say. Remus didn’t want his parents to say no to sending him to Hogwarts and he hoped that Dumbledore could convince them.
As Remus listened, he explained that there was a shack on the Hogwarts property that he could transform in and a tree called the Whomping Willow that guarded the entrance to the tunnel that led to the shack. Dumbledore himself would bring Remus there on the night of the full moon and retrieve him the next morning. Remus would be perfectly safe there and the other children would be perfectly safe at the school. And most important, no one would know what he was.

Remus’ eyes snapped open and he winced as a bolt of pain shot through his shoulder. Sitting up, he tentatively brought a hand up to his bare shoulder, his pulse speeding up slightly as he felt the raised skin. Getting out of bed, Remus stumbled to the bathroom and flicked on the light. He closed his eyes against the harshness of it as he moved towards the mirror and when he opened them, he simply stared at the scars. There were four slashes across his shoulder as if he’d been scratched and they still looked fresh; tender and pink.
As he stared at his reflection in the mirror, his dream came back and he frowned. He’d been scratched by something in the dream. Something big. It shouldn’t have been possible, but there they were. He realized then that the second part of his dream had been the conversation between his parents and Dumbledore that he hadn’t been able to hear in his first dream and now he understood why. He had been attacked by a Werewolf, which meant only one thing; in his dreams, he was one as well.
Leaving the bathroom, Remus went back to his room and pushed back the curtains, not at all surprised to see the full moon shining high in the sky.
