When: 2-20
Where: The hospital.
Rating: Low
Status: Complete
Rehearsals hadn’t gone quite as smoothly as Lux would have liked. Her assistant, Justin, hadn’t quite stuck his landing on the new trick they’d been working on and was now sitting in his boss’ backseat, looking like he was in serious pain. Which he probably was. Lux was quite suspicious he’d broken his leg or sprained something badly. Oops.
Now on the way to the hospital, Lux pulled up to the Emergency Room entrance. She couldn’t say sorry enough to Justin, who was assuring her it was his fault. They had both been a bit careless, to be honest. But now they had to seek medical attention, and Lux had to get Justin’s off-night replacement in full-time. A hard thing to do -- she’d have to step back her show while his leg healed.
Stopping her car in the parking outside (paying for parking on the way in), Lux ran in and grabbed the closest wheelchair before bringing it back to the car. Loading Justin into it, she wheeled him back inside and pulled up to the reception desk. “Hi! We’re going to need to see a doctor,” she told the woman sitting there.
While Justin made work on his paperwork, Lux leaned on the desk and was hanging her head, just exhausted by the day’s events. She was expecting a permanent headache.
It had been a busy few days for John Watson, and he wasn't quite sure he wasn't going to get a headache of his own soon if everything didn't slow down a bit. Valentines day had its own personal charm as far as little holidays went-- but it also seemed to make for more drunk driving as well as just accident prone stunts.
So far today, he'd dealt with a good variety of injuries, although thankfully nothing too serious. Having an extra second after finishing up some paperwork of his own, he stepped into the waiting room just to see what was next.
Accident prone stunts? Interesting. Luckily (or perhaps not so lucky), this was just part of Lux’s day-to-day. They expected injury to happen as they developed more daring stunts on stage. She made her performers sign a waiver. She’d had to do the same when she’d started out, too.
Looking up from her morose-looking position, Lux turned to John and smiled at him. He looked like a nice person, and was definitely wearing the doctor garb. She assumed that he was at least a doctor there, or else he was just dressed like one and was a total crazy person. Either way, Lux wasn’t about to turn down talking to a nice looking doctor. It just wasn’t her style.
“Hello there,” she greeted, never the shy type. She nodded toward him, still smiling. “Long day?” he looked tired.
John smiled, setting aside the clipboard he’d been glancing over-- something about a possibly broken leg--and glanced up at the woman speaking. He always liked the friendly sort that didn’t seem mad about being where they were. Obviously, no one would be at the hospital if they didn’t have to be.
“Hello,” he returned the greeting like a champ, “It’s been a bit long, yes. But not boring.” Which he wasn’t sure was good or bad, but there it was. He glanced over at the boy she was clearly with. “Must be Justin?”
Lux was certainly not the type to be angry, and she wasn’t the one that’d been hurt, so that helped. Justin was taking his injury like a true professional. She turned to Justin, who looked up at John and said his “Yeah, that’s me.”
“We had a bit of an accident while rehearsing,” she explained, turning back to the doctor. Running a hand through her hair, she smiled a bit sheepishly. “Hopefully it’s not a break. I think it’s just sprained or fractured, he didn’t land on it too hard.” To which Justin rolled his eyes. Well, they wouldn’t know until a doctor had a look at him, anyway. “Well, it didn’t look awful, anyway. Sorry, Just’.” She was a nickname person.
“Just” was a fairly cute nickname, John noted -- vaguely bemused. He wondered momentarily what they would be rehearsing, but figured there’d be time enough to figure that out.
“Well,” he said, cheerfully enough, “Let’s find out, shall we?” The man wasn’t screaming his head off, so it was possible it wasn’t all that bad. Then again, some people did deal with pain oddly. He offered to wheel the young man’s chair to the room they needed to be in. Probably some x-rays would deal with the question of broken or sprained -- but there were cheaper ways to go about it before all that.
Justin wasn’t the type to be screaming. Well, to be honest it had been about 20 minutes since everything had happened. He’d had time to stop screaming in pain. Letting John wheel Justin into the room, Lux followed. She wasn’t exactly sure that she was supposed to, but she might as well follow to be sure that everything was set before heading back to work. “Thank you for your help, doctor...” she drifted off, obviously waiting for him to fill in that bit.
“Watson,” replied, well, Watson. “And it’s no problem. This is what I’m here for.” And wasn’t that just the truth? He rose his eyebrows up in a blank sort of expression that bordered on bemused. It was sort of his default expression. “Feel free to sit in, if you like. Well, if Justin likes, anyway.”
He’d helped the kid up onto an actual bed -- and was running his hands along the bones there -- feeling for breaks or whatever Doctors do.
“Um, Lux?” Justin looked back at her, giving her that face that meant he wasn’t entirely comfortable with his boss hovering over him. “I think I’m okay from here.”
But ugh, Lux wanted to hover over this Watson. Oh well. She nodded at Justin, then smiled as Watson began his examination. “Right. Okay, no problem. Well, it was nice to meet you, Dr. Watson. I’ll wait for you in the waiting area, Just’. Hope everything’s okay.” She reached and gave his shoulder a squeeze, tossed John a smile and then headed for the waiting area. To wait. And that stuff. She sat and started playing on her phone while she did that.
------
Some talking and an x-ray later, Watson decreed that the boy had not, in fact, broken his leg, but instead just strained it. Which, he informed Justin, was good news. With some rest and a bit of compressing, he’d be right as rain in no time at all.
Suggesting that the boy get a crutch to keep his weight off of his leg was about as much as he could do in an instance like this -- and with all that done, he helped wheel him back out into the waiting lobby, since his boss, Lux, was waiting there.
Standing the moment she saw John and Justin wheeling back to the waiting room, Lux smiled at the two, nervous for the news. “Well?” she asked, putting her phone in her bag. She put a hand on Justin’s shoulder, watching John but glancing down to him as well just in case.
“Well,” said John with a wry smile, “you didn’t succeed in murdering him, if that was what you were worried about.” Doctor humor: it was kind of weird, man.
“Damn!” Lux cried out, a bit dramatically. She threw her hands in the air and directed her eyes upward, making a bit of a face (and being just a bit ridiculous) at that. “My nefarious plot is foiled!”
Turning to Justin, Lux got the real answer from him. “It’s just a strain, Lux. I’ll need crutches for a few days, but I should be in working order soon!” He flashed her a smile, which she returned.
“Well, isn’t that just the best news of the day,” she said, turning back to John. “Thank you, Doctor Watson, for only straining his leg and not breaking it.” Lux humour: it was even worse, man.
John found he quite enjoyed it though. Really. He grinned and gave a little shrug. “Breaks are messy. Might as well go straight for murder at that point -- and it’s all just a bit much effort.” Poor, poor Justin. Sitting through this horrible conversation.
Yeah, Justin was definitely rolling his eyes. Lux was lame, but the fact that she had met someone with the same bad humour? Bad news. “All the plotting, making sure you won’t get caught... Hey, I’m a magician with Siri though. We could probably get away with it.” She winked, because clearly she was kidding.
Justin tossed back a “Hey, can we get going? My phone died and my girlfriend’s gonna be pissed.”
Lux was still grinning as she looked back at Justin. “For sure,” she told him, offering a hand to shake Watson’s. “It was nice to meet you, new murder-buddy Doctor Watson.” That’s his new name. Yup.
He shook on it. It was kind of fun that they were nearly ignoring the boy. “Great. Nice to meet you too. I know who to call the next time I need to hide the bodies.”
