After texting Faye about the cupcakes, Max put the mini maple bacon cupcakes into a box and imputed the address Faye had given her into google maps on her phone. It wouldn’t take her too long to get there and the directions seems pretty easy, so Max left her apartment, box of cupcakes in hand and headed out to Costa Mesa. As it turned out, Faye was only one town over, because Max lived in Huntington Beach and it took no time at all before she was outside Faye’s apartment and rang the buzzer.
Faye was pretty sure Max was some kind of cupcake fairy, the woman could bake really damn well. When she had brought the car load over for the superbowl party Faye had been amazed, that combined with the alcohol at the bar and the many lovely men present had meant they’d had a fun time - even if the sport hadn’t been the main focus.
She answered the door when the buzzer went, smiling as she saw Max, “Hey you” she said, “Welcome to my humble little apartment”
“Hey. Hope you’re ready to taste test,” Max smirked and held up the box, which contained the mini cupcakes then followed Faye inside. “So far it’s better than mine. I’ve got one bedroom, really loud, obnoxious upstairs neighbors, who have sex at all times of the day and I think there might be a family of mice living under my kitchen cabinets.” Yeah, it wasn’t exactly glamorous, but it was all she could afford for now, with what she made at the diner.
“Oh I very much am” Faye promised as she closed the door behind Max. “You know we’re similar than I thought, swap out the one bedroom for two, my sister wouldn’t share with me on pain of death” she grinned, “And instead of neighbours who have sex all the time we have neighbours who have crying children”
“I think I’d rather listen to the constant sex than the constant crying,” Max laughed as she followed Faye into the apartment, “Does that make me a voyeur? Are you a voyeur if you’re only listening and being forced to?” While Max was saving up for a shop, she was also saving up for an apartment upgrade, but those coupled with her cupcake expenses and rent, left her with very little extra spending money. She was lucky that her boss at the diner let her, not only sell her cupcakes there, but didn’t ask for a share of the proceeds, because that money was what she used to buy supplies.
“Yeah I’d take your sex couple over my baby couple anyday” Faye agreed, “At least your neighbours are having a good time” she winked before considering the question. “Voyeurs maybe chose to listen? Or they get off on listening. So as long as you don’t get your rocks off listening to them I think you’re fine” she grinned. “Drink?” she offered.
Max laughed and nodded, “Good point. And yeah, I definitely don’t get off on it, because all I can do is picture them and they’re not the most attractive couple; if you know what I mean,” She knew that there was no point in complaining to her super, because what was he really going to do about it? Tell them to stop having sex? Fat chance. “A drink would be good. Thanks,” Max set the box down on the closest flat surface glanced around the apartment, “I just keep in mind that if I had stayed in New York, I’d probably have one room in total, a toilet in the corner and a sink.” So, maybe she was exaggerating a little bit, but she probably wasn’t too far from the truth.
“God they aren’t even a couple of young hot bods?” Faye grinned, “Maybe I’ll take the baby after all” she chuckled, “What can I get you? Juice, soda, something a little stronger?”
She was glad when Max set the box down, she liked people who made themselves at home, so much better than standing on ceremony. Not like it was all that after all. “Oh tell me about it, we’ve stayed in some pretty fucking awful apartments. One place above this restaurant - specialised in fish. Even with all the doors and windows closed we smelt like fishguts all day”
“Understandable. Listening to unattractive people have sex isn’t for everyone,” Max teased and crossed her arms in front of her chest, or to be more precise, under her chest, “Soda is fine. If I wasn’t driving I’d probably go for something stronger, but I should probably be all responsible and shit.” Max definitely didn’t need to get pulled over.
At the mention of a fish stenched apartment, Max wrinkled her nose, “Ew. Now that’s just bad. I’ll take the unattractive sex couple over the fish stench.” Max rarely waited to be told to sit or anything like that and tended to make herself at home wherever she went.
“Ah responsibility” teased Faye as she moved to the kitchen to get a couple of soda’s.
“Yeah, I’d take most things over that apartment, we didn’t stay there long” she replied, though possibly would have stayed longer had it not been for Faye being caught counting cards by a local gambling group she’d been part of.
“I can only imagine how much stock you had to buy in bath and body works in order to not smell like fish, yourself.” Max laughed as she opened the box of cupcakes to make sure that they hadn’t tipped over or anything. Eventually, she would have to get those boxes that had spaces for the cupcakes so that they wouldn’t fall over and get frosting all over the place. Luckily, the mini cupcakes were still perfect.
“Oh yeah” Faye said, “Horrendous amounts of bath products were bought and used. They mostly worked” she laughed before placing a soda in front of Max, “Oh wow, they look amazing” Faye exclaimed, “You truly are a baking genius” Faye could burn water so the idea of making cake from scratch was completely foreign to her.
Max thanked Faye and picked up one of the cupcakes, holding it out to the other girl, “Go on. You now you want to.” Whenever Max made a new cupcake, she always made them mini first so tht if they were garbage she wouldn’t be wasting too much if she had to throw them away. These particular cupcakes though, she’d already tried one...or four...and knew that they were definitely to die for.
Faye grinned brightly and took the cupcake from Max with a thank you. Biting into it Faye’s eyes widened and she dropped down into a chair, eating happily. “Oh my god” she said when her mouth was no longer full of cake, “That is cupcake heaven. How did you discover those flavors?” It was quite honestly one of the best things she had ever tasted.
Max’s deep red lips, spread into a huge grin as she watched Faye’s reaction to the cupcake, “Google, mostly. When I get bored of making the same thing, I look up different recipes then I make my own adjustments.” So far Max had only had a couple of recipes turn out to be really bad, “Next up is Oreo flavored.” After all, if you didn’t like Oreos then you were wrong.
“A-maze-ing” Faye told her simply, “Oreo flavored cupcake, oh wow. I have a feeling I’m going to get so very fat but not even care” she joked.
“Well, I’ll make sure to let you know when try those ones. Next up though, I’m gonna make some bigger versions of these. So far they’ve been a hit.” Max was always happy when someone enjoyed her cupcakes, “Of course, that’s just me and you so far, but you get my drift.” And when Max said bigger versions, she meant like the type you actually got at at any other cupcake shop and not the medium sized ones that most people made for birthday parties.
“You can definitely put me down for an order. I’m sure my sister and her boyfriend would love them too” Faye told her, “Let’s be honest, anybody with taste is gonna love them” She was already thinking about getting some to send to her friends, Gin would go crazy over them she was sure.
“I’m always up for taking orders. Just give me enough notice and I’ll get on it.” Max had filled a couple orders for customers at the diner, so it wouldn’t be the first time and she loved new customers. “I can also give you a list of other kinds I make, if you want to try something else.”
"Oh!" Faye said in realisation as an idea struck her, "My friend Vala is having a house warming party in a week or so, you should make cupcakes for that" she nodded as the idea took flight in her head. "It's Alice in wonderland themed so you could do big and small ones" she grinned.
“She actually already employed me,” Max smiled, running a hand through her wavy dark hair, “I just have to meet with her to find out what she wants.” Hearing that Faye and Vala knew one another was good, because it meant that Max would at least know someone there. Then again, not knowing anyone someplace never really deterred Max before, but it would be nice none the less.
Faye smiled brightly at this news, "That doesn't surprise me" she said, "We are scarily alike, so it stands to reason we share the same good taste in cupcake making friends"
“Well, I’m looking forward to it. If I keep getting offers like this, I may have to start looking for a partner to help me,” Max really hoped that she would keep getting offers like this, because the more parties and things she got offers to make cupcakes for, the more money she’d make to put into her cupcake shop and rent funds.
“You’ll have your shop in no time” she said brightly, “Make sure you get a business savvy partner then you can focus on making the cupcakes” Faye grinned.
“I’ll be sure to put that in the wanted ad.” Max grinned, her gaze flicking to the closest clock, “Oh, I’ve gotta be getting to work. I’ll send you that list of cupcakes later tonight.” Max wasn’t working the closing shift, so chances were, she’d still be awake enough by the time she got home that she’d remember to do it that night.
“That’d be great” Faye said, luckily working at the nightclub she still had a few hours before she had to get to work, she might even be able to get a nap in before she had to leave. “Thanks for letting me try, they really are incredible” she added as she stood with Max so she could let the other woman out of the apartment.
“It was no problem. There’s enough there that you should be able to share them with your sister,” Max smirked as Faye led her out, “Unless you want to hide them for yourself.” Max was always happy to hear people praise her cupcakes and making friends because of them was always a good thing as well.
