Alex had not planned or meant to do anything really special, but come Valentine’s Day morning, there would be a small box waiting for Sarah at the front counter. It was meticulously wrapped with ribbon that glowed blue and was white. Inside, several items rested in a nest of denim scarves. On the top was a meticulously refound and remembered copy of the outfit he had accidentally zapped and a gift card to a nearby day spa. Around the sides of the box were lined a dozen red and yellow roses. Under it all was a small round looking device he once invented intended to be a water scrubber to desalinize water which instead washed dishes.
He was to the side, fitting out his new arcade video game, which he had started working on early.
Sarah was caught off guard when she came in. The entire display was elegant, and not over the top, and she looked through the card, and the roses. She set them down, unsure if she should feel harassed or touched. She turned to look at Alex, opening her mouth, then furrowing her brow and closing it.
Alex glanced over at her and waved, utterly unknowing he had caused any confusion at all. “Say, how much do you know about old video games?” He generally was sort of clueless and fairly easy-going. And truthfully, it was all meant platonically, anyway. So, yes.
“We had a couple on base. Stuff from the 80s and early 90s mostly. I think they had an original Street Fighter.” She decided to ignore the gifts, and came over.
“I played that a few times.” Alex nodded. “It’s been a long time since I’ve seen one of these, but it needs a replacement motherboard, I think which I can make, but man, this is awesome. This game seems pretty powerful. The innards are like nothing I’ve ever seen...”
Which it did, seeing as it was filled with alien computer tech. Alex just assumed it was something really old.
“Try not to take out too much time from the Dane project,” Kerrigan admonished, gently. She put a hand on his arm.
Alex smiled and nodded. “I won’t. I promise.” He nodded, then taking a breath. “Guess we should get to work on that.” He grinned wider. “I hope we can get the bulk of it done in the next while. Should be able to deliver a finished product soon, I think.” He nodded.
“Is there some way we could speed things up? Or is this a case of do it fast, right and expensive, or cheap, right and slow?” After all, out of fast, cheap and right, you could only ever have two at once. That was the rule anyway.
Alex’s eyes went vague. “We could... if we switched out the power voltage regulators, stripped the wiring and made it a faraday cage-like situation, instead of a standard configuration, make it happen within a day or two... maybe a day, total, if we are good. Which we are.”
He nodded then.
“And it might even work better in the long run.”
Sarah kissed him on the cheek. "Thanks for the flowers."
She rolled her sleeves up, her eyes going hard, and she said. "Then if we're that good, we should prove it, right? Lets be miracle workers!"
FIN.
