“How long do you think this will take?” Clarice held a mask to her face as she watched Faiza work, concern writ on her face. Her eyes cast a soft green glow in the dim room.
“She got really worked over, the poor thing,” Faiza responded, sweat beading her brow. She’d never tried to fix someone’s intestines before, not like this. There was myriad other damage to her innards, but this was the worse, and she thought she could do the most good there. She had the girl floating in the air, her stomach and torso separated into assorted bits and pieces. "Whoever did this work was amazing. They probably saved her life. Certainly made this a lot easier.”
Laura’s mind drifted over a life she’d never lived, remembering pain and loneliness she’d never felt before, but which mirrored her own sadness. She remembered being interrogated by two good men, both deciding how wrong she was, and all she wanted was to be left alone by them and the people who’d created her. She barely understood what was happening with her life, and the conversation made nothing clear to her, except that she would be best served by finding a new way to live, and keeping away from SHIELD agents.
McCoy was doing his rounds, wandering down the hall and checking in with both staff and patients alike. He wanted to check on Laura’s vitals, the girl who’d been brought in looking like she’d gone through a food processor. He pushed open the door and raised an eyebrow at what he saw.
“I don’t think you’re supposed to be in here.”
“Shit.” Clarice stepped between him and Faiza, though what the pink woman could do, she wasn’t entirely sure. She just didn’t want Faiza’s concentration to be interrupted. “We’re helping. And she’s a doctor. It’s okay.” A magical fairy doctor, sort of, but a doctor.
“Is that you, Leonard?” Faiza glanced over her shoulder. “Did you do this work? It’s marvelous. I rather hate to mess with it, but I’m trying to help her heal a wee bit better, you see.”
One of Laura’s ribs floated into view, and Faiza poked it back into place.
McCoy stepped forward a little, looking up at the work that Faiza was doing on his patient. After having seen what he’d seen in his dreams -- the ones that were so very real -- and then the talk of magical powers on the Valarnet, and the woman just appearing in his apartment... not to mention the girl with Faiza was pink.... Well, strange things were happening left and right, and McCoy was taking it all rather well.
He shook his head a little. “You should have seen the state she was in when she came in here.” He said, folding his arms across his chest. “I’m assuming you’re repairing the damage?”
"I'm trying. The damage is immense and frankly I'm not sure how she was still alive when I got here," Faiza admitted. "I'd like to examine your work under other circumstances, it's rather.. sexy."
Clarice rolled her eyes.
McCoy blinked. He’d never imagined his work to be... He turned to the pink girl. “Did she just call my work... sexy?” He asked. Sure, being a doctor got him looks from ladies. But really. It was just stitching, right?
She shrugged. “Yeah, she just called your work sexy. She’s kind of a strange duck.”
Faiza clucked her tongue as she untangled Laura’s small intestine, then slowly began to bring her body back together. “This is rather fascinating. Even as I’m closing her up, her body is already accelerating the healing process on it’s own. It was fighting me, earlier, until I figured out how to work with it instead of against it.”
McCoy turned from the pink girl to Faiza, staring a little. His mouth was slightly open. “Well, the body wants to heal, it just needs the right tools.” He said, sounding both confused and confirmed.
“And a master surgeon,” Faiza said, getting the girl closed up completely. She let out a small sigh, and sagged against the bed. Clarice turned and caught her.
McCoy stepped forward to check the machines attached to the girl, he took note of the beeps and numbers and have a nod. "I'm not sure how you did what you did," he said, "but it looks like things are going to be all right." He paused. "That takes a lot out of you?"
“Not usually, but there was a lot of damage, and she was fighting me for awhile,” Faiza replied, pulling her gloves off as she turned to face him.”I think it depends. I know I’ve dreamed about reconstructing two people right at the moment of impact when falling out of a plane. That wiped me out, but it was better than being a smear on the ground.”
“Reconstruction?” McCoy asked. Now he was fascinated. He folded his arms across his chest and turned to face her. “Regrowth or simply repair?” He asked. “I want to know more about what it is you do.”
“Repair generally, though I’ve been experimenting with regrowth.” Faiza clasped her hands behind her back. “I need something that’s already there to work with. It’s much easier to remove, say, a tumor, than it is to regrow flesh. Or if the body is already working to heal itself, I can speed that along.”
McCoy nodded. He had one thought spring forward in his mind. A patient of his who could use that potential power. At the same time, he wasn’t comfortable enough with this woman and her powers yet to discuss it at all. “We’ll have to speak more about this at a later date.” He said, softly. “I want to hear more about how this power developed, how long you’ve had it, how you’ve learned to use it...”
"I'd be happy to discuss it over tea sometime!" She didn't mind talking about it, as long as someone didn't think she was crazy.
“Good. You two should head out before Security make their rounds.” He said, gently, motioning toward the door. The guard would come by any minute to check on things in the ICU.
Faiza nodded her head, stepping closer to Clarice. The pink woman smiled at him. “Thank you, but we’ll go out the same way we came in.”
There was a flash of light, and then both women were gone.
McCoy blinked. He was probably going insane. He turned to head out of the room, giving a nod to the security guard as he headed back toward his office.
