Who: Violet and Cass.
What: Disneyland!
When: After Cass gets free from her parents.
Where: Disneyland!
Rating: PG.
Status: Complete!

Violet was wearing what she usually wore - leggings, a dress, a cardigan, and her favorite wide-brimmed hat. Not really Disney wear, but it was what she was most comfortable in. Grinning at Cass as they queued up to get their tickets, she folded her arms and ignored how badly she wanted a smoke. “So. What’s this stupid thing you did that you were going to tell me about?”

Cass on the other hand was wearing skinny jeans, a black t-shirt with a purple cardigan over it and purple chucks; her long, wavy black hair was pulled back in a ponytail. She was excited to be spending the day at Disneyland, especially since it gave her the chance to hang out with a new friend. She had thought that it might be a little awkward, hanging out with Violet, since it was technically the first time they’d met in person, but she was surprised to find that it wasn’t awkward at all.

“Oh god. So, I’m living with my friend Jubilee right now and Wednesday, after the trial, we went out with her friend Logan,” Cass still couldn’t believe that she’d actually asked Logan out over a text message the night before, “So, Jubilee was messing around and trying to set us up, but she wasn’t exactly subtle about it so it was kind of embarrassing.” They reached the front of the ticket line and Cass handed over cash in exchange for her ticket. She was very glad to have access to her own money now, “Anyway, last night, when I was texting you, I was texting him too and I asked him out. I’m pretty sure I made a complete fool out of myself though. He probably said yes, because he feels sorry for me.”

“If he said yes because he feels sorry for you,” Violet grinned, “fuck him. He’s not for you then. Guys aren’t this mystical thing. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I love my boyfriend and it was kind of a love at first sight thing, but even if I did ask out a guy and he didn’t like me, that’s his fucking deal. I’m awesome, but I’m not everyone’s flavor of awesome.” Violet lightly punched Cass on the arm. “You know, you’re pretty mature, but you don’t have to worry about this sort of thing.”

Cass laughed as Violet punched her in the arm, “That sounds exactly like something Jubilee would say. Then she’d try to set me up with someone else. I’ve never actually had a boyfriend before, so she thinks it’s her mission to get me one.” Had it not been for Jubilee inviting Logan out with them after the trial, Cass didn’t think that she would have been interested in Logan. She hadn’t told Jubilee that she’d been texting Logan, mainly because she knew that her friend would want to know everything and expect certain things. She was going to tell her of course, just not yet.

“But it’s true. You can’t force someone to like you. It just happens or it doesn’t. If he doesn’t, it’s not the end of the world. There’s billions of people on the planet. Lots of them will like you. Besides, you’re really pretty and famous. You’ve got advantages.” Violet was glad Tate already liked her and wasn’t the cheating sort. He’d have gone for Cass, she was sure of it.

Cass couldn’t help the slightly flush that came to her cheeks at Violets words and she smiled, “Thanks, Violet. According to Jubes, he has a thing for Asians and since I’m half Asian, I’ve already got an automatic in.” While that had caused her cheeks to flame when Jubilee said it right in front of Logan the other day, it had also amused her later on.

Once they had both gotten through the ticket line and the bag security line, Cass stopped and stared up at the entrance to Disneyland. It had been a long time since she’d been there and was glad that she was there with a friend who hadn’t been there yet, “Ready to have a magical day?” She asked, smirking at Violet.

“Let me guess, she said that in front of him.” This Jubilee seemed the type. Violet paid for her ticket and immediately was assaulted by joyful characters and colors from every angle. “I think I’m ready to hit the Villain Store. I promised Tate I’d bring him back some Hades stuff, and I’d like some Ursala stuff. But yeah, rides.” She liked Dumbo, she’d admit that.

Cass nodded, smirking, “How’d you guess?” That was just one of the things Jubilee had said in front of Logan. “It makes more sense to do rides and then going shopping, otherwise you have to lug your bags around the whole time.” Since she’d been there before, Cass led the way down Main Street USA, towards the castle. “Dumbo is behind Sleeping Beauty’s castle.”

“The way you’ve described her, it sounds like her tact button is broken.” She put her hands into her pockets before running over to buy some cotton candy. “Here. We should split this, we haven’t had nearly enough sugar to be doing Disney.” She broke off a piece, handing Cass the remainder before licking her fingers and sticking the fluff to each of them before gobbling them off.

“I’m glad your thing went well. We were going to do this regardless, but still.” Violet had decided just to wait out her birthday herself, it was close.

“Yeah, that’s pretty much how she is. She’s a good friend though. If it weren’t for her, I don’t think I would have made the decision to leave my parents. I mean, I wouldn’t have had anywhere to go.” Cass really was grateful to Jubilee and if asked who her best friend was, she would have said Jubilee. And honestly, if Jubilee were tactful then she wouldn’t be Jubilee.

Cass took the other half of the cotton candy and stuffed half of it into her mouth, “My dad would never let me have sugar. He had me on a strict diet. I’m so glad that I can pretty much eat whatever I want now.”

“That’s just controlling to the point of ridiculousness. My parents still haven’t worried too much about my never being there.” She rolled her eyes. “I haven’t slept at home in months, but they still think I’m just staying out late. There’s so much to be said for willful denial. They’re just trying to keep up appearances anyway.”

“Why don’t you do something about it?” Cass asked as they walked around Sleeping Beauty’s Castle, towards the queue for Dumbo. “I’m sure Mr. Dresden would help you, if you decided to do something about it. I know it’s not the same situation as me, but it sounds like you’re not happy with your current situation.” As she spoke, she realized that it probably sounded like she was prying, “I’m sorry, it probably isn’t my place to say any of this.”

“Honestly, by the time the paperwork finished, I’d be eighteen anyway. It’s fine, it’s not a big deal.” She shrugged. “I’m used to it by now, so it stopped bugging me ages ago.” Apparently willful denial was a family trait.

“When are you going to be eighteen? Soon?” Cass asked, leaning back against the metal bar of the line queue. The ride had just started, so they wouldn’t be moving for a few minutes, but from the looks of it, they were probably going to be getting on next.

Violet nodded. “July.” It wasn’t technically that far off, but it felt like an eternity in other respects. “I just know that legal proceedings can take ages and it doesn’t seem worth it.” Violet couldn’t help but smile at the happy parents with their kids on the ride. It was cute.

“That makes sense then. And I mean, as long as they’re not really bothering you, it seems like you’ve got everything figured out,” Cass said as the ride stopped and the current passengers got off, “What color do you want?” She asked as the line started moving and they passed the entrance then were inside the fence where the ride itself was. Now all that remained was trying to get the color Dumbo they wanted.

Violet grinned. “Purple.” She adjusted her tote bag on her shoulder, taking Cass’ hand and all but running toward the elephant she’d had her eyes on. Laughing felt good.

Luckily they were able to get the Dumbo they wanted and Cass climbed in first, sitting on the inside. She was really excited about being there with Violet and couldn’t wait for the first ride of the day to start.

It was faster than Violet had expected, and she whooped a little, grinning when they got higher. She still had cotton candy, and eating while they spun was challenging. She felt young and light in ways she hadn’t since she’d started dreaming that her boyfriend was a ghost mass murderer.

Cass was enjoying the feel of the wind as it blew her ponytail around and she honestly couldn’t keep the smile off her face. When the ride began to slow down and eventually came to a stop, she turned to Violet, still smiling, “And that’s just the beginning.”
