Lorna hummed as she walked in the door, tired but pleased with the day. Running her own shop was actually really fun! Champion bounced around her feet, happy to see his human home. She bent down and rubbed his tummy. “Oh, who’s a good boy? Who’s a good little puppy dog?” She grinned widely as she played with him, until she looked up and saw Tonks was in the living room. She paused, then laughed. “Hi!” Oops.
Tonks looked up as Lorna walked in, smiling as she played with the dog. When she was noticed she gave Lorna a little wave, “Hey” she said in greeting, “Good day?” she asked.
Lorna nodded, letting the little dog go. “Yep! I didn’t know you and Mac had a date tonight, want me to take off?” The house smelled delicious. She was sure she could find someone to bother if she got kicked out. Thor was probably not busy.
Tonks shook her head, “Not at all” she replied easily, “It’s hardly fair to kick you out every time I’m round” she added, especially since it was happening more and more often. Besides, Lorna was nice and Tonks thought she ought to get to know her better. It wasn’t like the poor woman hadn’t already caught Big Mac and Tonks going at it, embarrassment wasn’t an issue.
“It’s totally fair.” Lorna noted as she sat on the couch. “Mac owns the place, I just live here. I’ll stay for dinner, and take off so you guys can have the place to yourselves. Nobody wants an audience while they make out.” She grinned at Tonks.
“It’s your home too” Tonks replied, glad she would be staying for dinner, “Besides if you aren’t here everytime I’m round how am I going to get the pleasure of your company” she pointed out with a smile. Tonks flushed and buried her head in her hands, “Oh god” she said through her fingers, “I really am sorry about that” she said, not for the first time.
Lorna giggled. “Don’t worry, the orchard is awesome for that, and it was better than if you guys were on the couch or something.” She grinned. “But if you want to hang out with me, all you have to do is ask. I don’t want to crash your dates.”
Tonks let out a huff of laughter, her blush slowly leaving her face. Thankfully she and Mac hadn’t been caught anywhere else or by anybody else. At least it had been Lorna and not AJ, small mercies and all that. She nodded, “Then I will. Ask I mean” she clarified, “So you don’t feel like you're crashing any dates”
“Good. I can do stuff on Mondays, the shop’s closed then.” Her social life was taking a pretty hard hit, with the shop opening up. She didn’t mind most of the time, but it made making new friends hard.
“I can work with that” Tonks replied, “Plus side of having a somewhat flexible job” she grinned. “How’s the shop doing?” she asked interestedly.
“It’s only been open a couple days, and I’ve been pretty steady. But I opened Super Bowl weekend, so I think that has something to do with it.” She shrugged. “I’m having fun, at least, and that’s all I care about.”
“That’s a good sign though” Tonks said, “And having fun is definitely a must. No point being stuck doing something you hate right? Life is way too short for that”
“No kidding. I know you told me, but I totally spaced, what do you do for work again?” Lorna wanted to know more about Tonks.
“I’m a bounty hunter” Tonks answered easily, “Mostly for bail bondsmen, I do the odd skiptrace too but those are pretty rare” she added. She loved her job and was good at it too. It also paid well so she didn’t have to work too often.
“Right, that must be exciting.” Lorna was curious about that kind of work. “How did you get into that?”
“I applied for the police force originally but it just wasn’t for me so I travelled around for a bit” she explained, “Met a couple who were bounty hunters, they showed me the ropes and I found I liked it. So I got my own licence and set up on my own here”
“That’s pretty cool.” Lorna said with a smile. “At least you’re doing something awesome that you like. That’s what’s important, I think.”
Tonks nodded, “Absolutely. There’s very little point in getting stuck in a job you don’t like, it’s really not worth being that miserable”
Lorna nodded. “That’s the main reason I went into business for myself. I’m totally in control of how my work goes.”
“One of the best reasons” Tonks replied, “You studied botany is that right?” she asked, trying to remember what the other girl had said before.
“Yep! I have my masters, and it’s one of the reasons I’m opening up a dispensary. I have my own special breed, it’s almost perfect.” She grinned.
Tonks grinned in return, “I managed to keep a rose plant alive while I was travelling, it’s actually in the garden now but that’s about my limit” she said with a chuckle.
“Roses are pretty tempermental, that’s really good!” Lorna said with a grin. “Do you know what kind of rose it is? I could maybe give you some tips.”
“Really?” Tonks asked, “I assumed they must be really easy if I managed to not kill it. No idea why kind it is, but you’ll have to come over and see it” she added.
“Well, you know, maybe yours is an easy going one, but they can be pretty tricky. Especially at first, because they’re popular and kind of tend to get poorly bred. It’s really sad, in a way.” Roses were the labrador retrievers of plants. “Oh, does it have a really noticeable scent?”
“That is sad” Tonks agreed, unknowingly following Lorna’s train of thought and imagining a sad puppy dog, “It’s sweet and strong up close but move a metre or so away and it’s not really noticeable”
That still made Lorna very excited. “Oh, you might have something really good on your hands! A lot of modern breeds don’t have very much scent at all. You might have a plant that’s been mixed with an heirloom breed.”
Tonks had never been one to get excited over plants but Lorna’s enthusiasm was kind of infectious, she laughed happily, “Then you should come and see it, and if it is an unusual one take cuttings or whatever it is you do so you can grow more”
“Oh, I’d love that! Thank you so much!” Lorna was giddy with excitement. Even if it was a common breed, the offer was very nice, and that was something to be excited about, too.
"You're more than welcome" Tonks replied, "maybe you could teach me more about roses too. Or any plants really, I like spending time in the garden I just don't know how or what to try and grow"
“I’d love to!” Lorna gushed. It was a pleasure to help people with their gardens.
“Great” Tonks said, surprised herself at how much she was looking forward to the idea and pleased Lorna seemed so willing.
Mac loved cooking and loved having Tonks visit a lot. With Lorna around, too, he had found his life suddenly filled with more than family. It was odd, but good. Today, Mac had been listening vaguely and he chuckled as he popped his head in. Good to see them talking. Good. He nodded and spoke.
“Dinner’s ready. Good to see you Lorna. Table’s made, sit.” He spoke softly, warmly, and then ducked back into the kitchen, grinning as he went to pour drinks.
