Laura was glad she’d spent the previous night sleeping instead of working. A day out with a new friend would be so fun! She didn’t have any rollerskates, so that had been her first stop. Skating was something she’d done a lot as a kid, so she hoped she’d still be good at it now.
She was bouncing with excitement after Logan let her out. Her new skates hung over her shoulder by their laces, a big smile on her face. Since the weather was so nice, Laura was wearing very small shorts and a tank top. The sun felt nice on her skin, but she had sunglasses on to protect her eyes. She didn’t spend a lot of time outside during the daytime.
Deryn was already there -- sitting on a park bench and lacing up her roller skates (and they were real skates -- none of that inline rollerblade action for her!) that just happened to be a shade of bright green. Neon, even. She love, love loved bright colors.
She was exceptionally excited today, as the prospect of doing something fun with someone new was the best prospect ever, really. Especially someone that sounded just as excited as she was.
She stood, wobbling just a little until she got hold of her balance, and spotted the other girl getting out of the car. “Janelle?” She asked, barely able to contain her glee.
Laura grinned widely, and rushed over to the bench. She had rollerblades, because real skates were harder to find. “Hi, Deryn! Your skates are so pretty! Give me a minute and I’ll be all set!” She was very enthusiastic, and smiled brightly. This would be fun even without sex!
“Okay,” said Deryn, who was slowly rolling backward on her skates, not even really noticing. “And thank you! I like them.” She’d found them in one of those places that sell used sporting goods. And good thing for that, because she just didn’t have the balance to pull off blades. She skated around in a little circle, giggling to herself as if she didn’t have a care in the world. And really, she kind of didn’t anyway.
Laura carefully put her skates on, tying them tightly, like her mother had always told her to do. She stood up, wobbling at first, but getting her balance back quickly enough. “Okay! Ready!” Laura grinned at Deryn. Her new friend was so cute!
“Yessss!” said Deryn, and it was really true: the girl nearly spoke in exclamation points only. “Me too!” She scooted backward a little, making sure Janelle had enough room to get used to her ‘blades before actually taking off at high speeds. Rest assured though, that would definitely happen. “I’m so glad you wanted to come out,” she told her new friend, because obviously they were totally friends now.
“I didn’t work last night, so I needed something to do. It’s such a pretty day, too.” Laura grinned, scooting up to stand next to Deryn. “Lead the way! I don’t know this area as well as you.” She didn’t leave Irvine much. She tended to leave places and never go back to them.
“I got off work early today,” Deryn said, pleased. She was always kind of pleased, though. Skating forward, she lead the way as asked. “It’s nice over here, because the sidewalks are wide and the view is really pretty.” It wasn’t called Huntington Beach for nothing, after all, and the ocean was always a pretty view. She did a sloppy little turn so that she could skate backward and talk to Janelle at the same time.
Janelle was impressed. She had never gotten the hang of skating backward. “It is really pretty. I haven’t been to the beach in a while.” She looked out over the blue waves, unable to stop smiling. “It’s like heaven here.” She wobbled every now and then, but over time she remembered how to move, and her motions became more stable. “Do you live here?”
“I live in the OC, but not Huntington Beach,” the blonde admitted -- looking over her shoulder to make sure she wasn’t about to skate into anyone. “But I come here a lot, because it’s pretty, and because the stores are really way more fun.” It was a touristy sort of area, that catered to younger crowds. She liked that. Deryn giggled, without prompting.
Deryn’s giggles were infectious, and Laura giggled for no reason. “What stores do you like?” Laura didn’t do a lot of shopping, but she did like to go into pet stores. Maybe they could do that during this adventure.
Holy crap. Deryn totally loved pet stores. Like, more than should have been humanly possible. “Weeeellll,” she said, stretching her word out until it sounded funny to her. “There’s a cute little joke shop. And ice cream. There’s good ice cream. And... hum. A place that sells really cute dresses.” Deryn liked dresses a lot -- the cute little sundress kind, that both looked nice and were also just terribly comfortable.
“Oh, I like to go clothes shopping.” Laura said with a grin. “I have a lot of cute outfits for work, and some for when I’m off, too.” Oooh, maybe Deryn could help her pick out something nice to wear the next time she went to Jubilee’s house. Laura liked to dress up for Jubilee. “Dresses are so nice.”
“They are!” Nearly bumping into someone, Deryn found it in her best interest to turn around and actually watch where she was going for a while. Surely, her luck with balance was bound to run out eventually. “What do you do for work? I never get to dress up for mine.”
Oh crap. Laura was glad Deryn had her back turned. What could she say? Lying was bad, but she was lying about her name all the time, wasn’t she? “I, uh, do videos for the Internet.” At least that job was legal. Then she remembered YouTube was a thing. “I’m on YouTube a lot.” Did people get paid for that? She had no idea. Probably, why would people put up so many videos for free?
“Oooh,” Deryn said, her tone coming off as clearly impressed. “That sounds really fun, I bet you like it.” If she thought Janelle was lying, she sure didn’t show it. But Deryn was a trusting sort of girl anyway -- she’d never had any reason not to be. “Hey,” she said, perking up. “Wanna race?”
“It is a lot of fun!” Janelle said, cheerfully. She liked her new job a lot. “And yes I want to race! Where to?”
“Uhhhm,” said Deryn, totally decisively. “Oh! How about up to over that hill over there?” She pointed to a spot a fair distance away.
Laura nodded. She could make that, no problem. “Ok! Let’s go, then! We’ll start at the corner, and keep going until we’re at the top of the hill!”
---
The race had gone eventfully -- in that Deryn had lost her balance at least once enough to take a spill to the ground. Instead of making a big deal of it, she’d giggled and pushed herself up quickly, ignoring scraped palms and knees to finish the race. She had not won, but she had certainly had fun.
Laura paused when Deryn went down, but the girl didn’t seem bothered, and she wanted to win. So she kept going, watching the other girl as she finished. “Are you okay? That looked like it hurt.”
“I’m good,” said Deryn with a laugh -- she had a good laugh, it suited her and was a bit musical, really. “Just some scratches. Anyway, you went really fast! That was great!”
“Thank you. I’m glad you’re okay.” Laura hugged her. “Do you want to get ice cream now?” She was so excited at the idea of getting ice cream. It was one of her favorite things.
Oh yay, hugs! Deryn totally loved hugs. She hugged back and then wobbled on her skates for a moment. “Oh, yes,” she said, as if the idea had just occurred to her, and they hadn’t talked about it earlier. “Ice cream. Definitely. There’s a place not too far from here at all. It has all the best kinds.” Which, when ice cream was concerned, was all of the kinds.
“Great!” Laura said with a grin. “Lead the way, and I’ll follow! I’ll even buy the ice cream, I brought a little money just in case.” It was a hot day, the ice cream would be a great break from the heat, and they’d get to talk a little more. “Hey, you never told me what your job is.”
“Okie dokie,” the blonde agreed, readily. They stopped at a little bench to switch out skates for real shoes (Deryn had done just enough falling for one day, and it was still a little early to tempt fate). “Oh, I guess I didn’t, hah. I work at the Farmer’s Market. I coordinate stuff and help out wherever. It’s fun!” Not exactly a career, but it wasn’t really like she was looking for one, either.
Laura was never awake when the farmer’s market was open, so she was very curious about it. “What do they do there? Do they sell farmers?” That was a little weird. She was used to being wrong about things, and hope that was the case this time. She pulled her shoes out of her backpack, hoping her skates would fit in their place.
Deryn laughed again, definitely thinking that Janelle was joking. How could she not have been, after all. “Noo,” she said, “we sell fruits and vegetables. Sometimes some other stuff. Flowers and.. stuff. It’s all good. It’s kind of nice because then I don’t have to go grocery shopping like ever.” She was carrying a messenger bag, and managed to tie the laces of her skates so that she could just sling them between the strap.
Laura wound up hanging hers over her shoulder again, but she didn’t mind. The farmer’s market sounded like fun! “I’ll have to visit sometime! I really like fruit.” When she was on the streets it had been a rare indulgence. Now she could have it everyday if she wanted to (and she often did).
“You should!” Deryn sounded really excited by that idea. “We have the best fruit! Locally grown, no weird chemicals. I have a friend who has an apple orchard. They’re delicious.” They walked up the hill away from the beach, to a street full of little locally owned restaurants and boutiques.
“I really like apples.” Laura admitted. “They’re so crunchy!” She was very fixated on the texture of things. “Okay! I’ll visit you next time, just let me know when it is!” It was worth staying up for really good apples.
“Okay,” agreed Deryn, super happy to have made a new friend that seemed just about as excited as she was about most things. A lot of people thought her weird or stupid for being so upbeat and happy about things; she wasn’t -- she just liked to keep things simple.
Arriving at the little ice cream parlor, she opened the door for Janelle.
Janelle thanked her for holding the door, and bounced inside. The place was so clean and bright. She felt so happy being in the light so much. She rushed to the counter, eying the different varieties. “Oh my gosh, they have all the flavors! Look, a rose flavored one!” Laura didn’t even try to contain her excitement.
Deryn peered through the clear window displaying the ice creams as well, marveling. They always seemed to be getting new flavors. “Oooh, mango,” she pointing to that too, and then “Red velvet cupcake ice cream! Oooh.” She’d never be able to decide. She bumped again Janelle’s arm with her own, friendly and excited.
The casual contact made her smile even brighter. She loved to be touched. “Oh man, how are we going to pick?” This was the best terrible thing ever. “There’s a lemonade flavored one.” Decisions like these were always so hard to make. Laura bounced a little, trying to decide.
The clerk behind the counter laughed. “Would you ladies like to try a couple and see what you like?”
“Yessss,” said Deryn, and her smile was bright enough to be blinding. “Oh my gosh. This one, and this one and--oh-- that one!” She was pointing wildly.
Laura joined in, and the clerk laughed. “Okay, how about this. I can give you a little taster spoon of everything, if you girls want.” It was actually one of their menu options. It seemed like smart business to the clerk, and obviously the girls had no idea what their favorites were, yet.
Laura’s eyes went wide with glee. “Oh! YES! That would be awesome! Thank you so much!” She bounced and clapped, overjoyed at the idea of experiencing so many new tastes at once.
Once they’d gotten all their ice cream (and it was a lot), the two girls sat down at an outside table to dig in. The lemonade ice cream was better than Deryn had even expected it to be. She smiled a contented sort of smile and leaned on the little table with both elbows. “This is good,” she said, not exactly talking about the ice cream.
Laura nodded. “It really is.” She hugged her new friend with one arm. Hee! Hugs! “I’m so glad I met you! We need to do this everyday, forever.” She giggled, knowing they couldn’t actually do that. She would remember this day forever. It was perfect.
