Kitty made it home from the comic shop, still a little flustered. Her mind was racing at the implications. Mostly the implication was that she had completely lost her mind.
One does not dream about events in a comic book they'd never read. Detailed dreams. More detailed than what was described in the books.
She dropped the three trade paperbacks she'd purchased on her table, along with the hentai comic she'd bought for Jubes, and stared at them. She picked up the first one, paging through it again. Kitty Pryde and Wolverine. It was even her name. Why was it her name? Coincidence?
She looked at the clock, "Shit shit shit." She dropped the book again and ran into the bathroom, stripping as she went. Showering and shaving almost everywhere, and using a flowery body wash, she pushed the comics out of her mind. Everyday realities like a first date with a woman were easier to deal with.
She had to get her hair into something resembling order, and pull on a blue dress that she hoped Xi'an would like her in, and her favorite strappy shoes, and she had about ten minutes left to do it!
Xi'an tried to ignore the twins' obvious glee at her having a date with Kitty. Really, they were more excited than she was; she supposed she should be glad they were willing to share her time with someone who wasn't them.
She decided on a simple black cocktail dress. It wasn't too fancy, but it was a sort of any occasion dress. She instructed Leong and Nga not to stay up waiting for her: bedtime was still bedtime, no matter how interested they might be in how it went.
She took a deep breath when she pulled into a parking space at Kitty's apartment. She wasn't that nervous, but it was still a date, and it had been unexpected. Nice, but unexpected. She slowly made her way up the stairs and knocked on Kitty's door.
Kitty threw open the door. She'd opted to put her hair up, some strands and curls dangling down and brushing her shoulders near her neck. Her blue dress was strapless and huggy and ended just above her knees.
She took in a breath sharply, then gave Xi'an a wide grin. Wow, "You look..wow. Hi." Breathe, Kitty, breathe. Its just Xi'an. In a black cocktail dress. She picked up her purse, making sure her phone and the tickets were in it, "I'm sorry. I'm a little nervous." Or a lot.
Xi'an was a little surprised herself. She hadn't seen Kitty dressed up before and...well. She dressed up very nicely. And the dress looked....really, really good.
"It's okay to be nervous. It's your first date with a woman, yes?"
Kitty nodded her head, "Yeah. Haven't had that many with guys. At least fancy dress up ones. I wanted..." She shrugged a shoulder, closing the door and locking it, "I guess I wanted to start out right. You're so sweet, you really deserve it."
Xi'an flushed slightly. "That's sweet of you," she said as the started down the stairs. She opened the door for Kitty and smiled.
"Thanks." Kitty slid carefully into the care, and buckled herself up. She actually couldn't recall the last date where they'd opened the door for her. It was kind of nice. She made a point to sneakily watch Xi'an as she got in, too.
Xi'an eased into the driver's seat and buckled up. "Where to?"
Kitty pulled a map out of her purse, and leaned over to get closer to show her, "Here. We should get there early if traffic isn't too bad."
Xi'an nodded. "Sounds like a plan." And off she drove!
Kitty got comfortable, studying Xi'an as she drove. She was a much safer driver, but that made a whole lot of sense. Her eyes fell to Xi'an's leg, as she wondered if she could tell it wasn't real.
Xi'an could tell the leg wasn't real, yes. Even if the foam cover she put over it on ocassion did a decent job of making it look more real. Luckily for them, the traffic was fairly cooperative.
Kitty was actually having a hard time telling. If she didn't know to look. She wanted to rest a hand on Xi'an's good leg, but thought better of it and instead ended up lamely resting it between the seats.
"We're seeing Midsummer Night's." She ducked her head, "I won't lie, its one of the few I like."
Xi'an grinned. "It's a good one. And one of the easier to adapt ones, I think."
"Great!" And like that Kitty was excited again. Who knew honesty worked so well?
Xi'an smiled. She found a parking space and eased out of the car.
Kitty watched her. Yeah, she was pretty sure she was into that. She opened her own door and got out, not wanting Xi'an to need to go to the trouble.
In fact, she even went so far as to hold the door to the theatre open for her date. Go her!
Xi'an grinned. "Thanks."
Kitty placed her hand on the small of Xi'an's back to guide her in, and walked inside with her like that. She handed over the tickets, and they were ushered inside to seats that turned out to be half-way decent.
The touch was nice. The seats were nice, too. Hopefully the actors did a good job as well.
Kitty sat on Xi'an's left side, and looked around the theatre, "This reminds me of something. Did I ever tell you I did ballet when I was little?"
"No, you didn't." Xi'an smiled at the thought of a small Kitty in a tutu.
"Yes! Ballet and some gymnastics, but I didn't really keep it up once I discovered computers. I'm probably flexible enough for it now, but I couldn't compete." She wasn't sure where to put her arm or hand, so she just rested it between them. Then inched it onto Xi'an's thigh. A little.
It was just a simple touch. But it was more than that, too. It felt good to know someone found her attractive and was interested in spending more time with her, even with a missing leg and a pair of ten-year-olds.
The leg didn't bother her. It actually intrigued her. And she liked the ten year olds. A lot. She'd always wanted siblings. The theatre darkened as the opening curtain approached, and she moved her hand fully onto Xi'an's leg, tracing a finger in circles. She whispered, "Last time I saw this was a college play."
Xi'an grinned slightly. "Those can be pretty good, sometimes. Not always as good as a professional group, but sometimes they can be pretty amazing."
Kitty grinned back, "Yeah, they were pretty good." She quieted a little as the play began, and leaned her shoulder against Xi'an's. She hoped it would be good.
Xi'an smiled and watched the play.
The play turned out to be pretty good! Kitty actually found it holding her attention more than she thought it would. Which was saying a lot because she was enjoying Xi'an's reactions nearly as much. She had her arm around the other woman by the time it was over. When did that happen?
It really was a good production. And Xi'an had somehow found herself leaning against Kitty after the younger woman's arm found its way around her shoulder.
"That was..actually really good!" The night was making up for the whole comic nonsense. Which was just that, nonsense. She smiled at Xi'an, "What did you think? You're the literature buff."
She reluctantly pulled her arm around around the woman. People were filing out and she couldn't stay there all night next to her. Even though she wanted to.
"I liked it a lot. I like what they did with the lighting." Xi'an smiled at Kitty as they stood up. She wouldn't have minded sitting a little longer, but they should probably head on to dinner.
Kitty ended up leading the way out, and once again held the door for her. She spotted something as she was doing so, and touched Xi'an's hand, "I'll meet you at the car, okay? I need to do something really quick." Then she darted off!
Xi'an blinked after Kitty, then gave a mental shrug. She didn't know what had caught the younger woman's eye, but it must have been fairly important.
It was so very important! Kitty arrived at the car a few minutes later and snuck up behind Xi'an. She sounded breathless, "Hi. I uh....saw this and.."
She pulled her hands from behind her back and held out a bouquet of assorted flowers, "Here. For you."
Xi'an's hands flew to her mouth in surprise. She looked from the flowers to Kitty and smiled. "You got me flowers?"
Her reaction made Kitty's chest quiver and heart flip. She nodded her head and flushed, "Yeah..I ...wanted to get you some before but it was too late then."
"You are so sweet." Xi'an said. She took the flowers and smiled.
Kitty beamed at her, a bright headlight of a smile. Her heart continued to do some interesting flips inside her chest and she really wanted to kiss her. But she reeled herself in, "Oh okay. I got us some reservations. Its nothing super fancy, but its a cozy place."
Unless they got mugged somehow, she wasn't sure this night wasn't going to be awesome.
Also, she was glad Xi'an wasn't allergic. That would have been embarrassing.
Xi'an got in the car, carefully placing the flowers in the back seat first. The twins were going to be overjoyed about the flowers.
Kitty showed Xi'an where the restaraunt was on a map, and fortunately traffic was still light. They'd picked a good day, and her mood was through the roof. It turned out to be a steakhouse. She figured that would be safe. She'd almost picked Italian, but ..garlic.
"Lets hope the online reviews are truthful."
Xi'an smiled and opened the door for Kitty as they entered the steakhouse. Turnabout was fairplay, after all.
Kitty blushed. They were escorted to a booth in the back, and she waited for Xi'an before sitting, "What was your favorite part?"
Xi'an thought for a moment. "I like that they went with Hippolyta showing sympathy for Hermia and giving Theseus the cold shoulder glare for not being more sympathetic."
Kitty nodded her head. She knew she was completely not brilliant in that way, but she'd been paying attention and remembered the scene, "That's a lot different from other versions you've seen?"
"Some versions, Hippolyta just goes along with things, which I think misses out on more thought provoking takes on it."
She tilted her head, "I guess it expands more on the character?"
Xi'an nodded. "It allows the exploration of the relationship between Hippolyta and Theseus. I mean, she was queen of the Amazons and they met while in armed combat. There could certainly be a question of just how much is this wedding even something she actually wants."
Kitty leaned forward a bit, arms on the table and utterly engrossed by Xi'an, "So its more or less 'donotwant'? Like a forced marriage? At least in that particular interpretation?"
Xi'an nodded. "A 'I can't exactly get out of this because I have no army anymore and am essentially a captive' take, yes."
"That's kind of depressing," The younger woman replied. "But it sparks a lot of thinking. Like the roles of women. Do you think that's what he intended when he wrote it?"
"I'm not sure, but I do think he meant for it to be something for people to think about," Xi'an said.
Kitty smiled at her over her menu, "Well, I think that worked. I might be willing to try some of the ones I haven't liked, now, if those guys are going to do them." Her eyes darted slightly, "I really like the company too."
Xi'an smiled, flushing slightly. "I enjoyed the company, as well." More dates really might be nice.
Okay, she's going to go with a basic steak! Slowly, Kitty slipped a foot out of her strappy heels and brushed it against Xi'an's ankle, "Maybe we can make it a weekly thing?"
That got another blush. "I think I'd like that."
"I'll see if I can get us season tickets." Brush brush. Kitty smiled a little mischievously, "I think it'll be worth it."
"That'd be great." Xi'an smiled.
She put down the menu, knowing what she wanted, "If not Shakespeare, I know we'd both enjoy a movie night. Something with the twins in the evening." She stroked a toe down Xi'an's foot, "And something for the adults after they go to bed."
"That would be nice," she said. "But we should probably...not take things too fast." Even if right now fast sounded like a really nice idea, Xi'an wanted to try to take things slowly.
Kitty pulled her foot away as her face started to burn up, and she stammered, "I mean...meant like movies they're not old enough for." Why had she put the menu down, she can't hide behind it now!
"...that's what I figured you meant, but I thought I should probably say it anyway." Xi'an gave Kitty an awkward smile. "It's...been a while since I've dated, is all, and I don't want to get anyone's hopes too high too fast..."
Kitty swallowed, and nodded, "Y-yeah. Good idea." Waiterplscometakeorder?!
Xi'an looked at the table. Way to go, making things awkward.
Kitty swallowed again, then put a hand over Xi'an's, "Sorry. I didn't mean to...rush, I guess? Last thing I want is to make you feel uncomfortable. I'm just really attracted and excitable."
Xi'an turned her hand over and gave Kitty's hand a squeeze. "It's okay. I'm...saying it as much to tell myself that as to tell you. Because, like I said...it's been a while since anyone showed interest."
"I can honestly say I was interested the first time I saw you, just a little..not fully realizing it at the time."
"...I can say basically the same thing, really."
Kitty threaded her fingers though Xi'an's, "I had another dream that I never..." She shook her head, "Its not important. I want to see where this goes."
Xi'an raised an eyebrow, but didn't press. "I'd like to see where this goes, too."
Grinning in relief, Kitty managed to flag down a waiter, and ordered her steak, as well as some wine, "Get whatever you want." Awkward moment, passed? Mostly.
The waiter took their order. The wine was good, Kitty found herself talking about London and Chicago, and what she was allowed to reveal about her work. But not the comics. She wanted to read the comics before she mentioned them to Xi'an.
She'd already messed up once before, just by being too forward. She didn't need Xi'an wondering if she'd lost it. Bad dreams were one thing, but linking them to comics? Quite another.
By the time they finished and were driving back, she felt comfortable with the other woman again, enough to take her hand when she didn't need it on the steering wheel.
The drive back to Kitty's was nice. Holding hands was also nice. It had been...a really great night. And she did want to see about more nights along the same lines.
Kitty thought she could get used to this. She didn't want the night to end. She wanted to invite Xi'an in but was pretty certain that would lead to the exact opposite of 'not going fast'. That didn't stop her from asking, "You probably..need to get back to the twins at some point, yeah?" Oh, mouth, why do you do this to me?
"Yeah...I told them not to wait up for me, but they're probably still awake listening for the door." Xi'an chuckled softly.
"So they could ambush you and make you spill all the beans?" Kitty stroked Xi'an's knuckles with her thumb, "I want to...do this again. I'll look into that pass, but maybe you get to pick the place this time?"
Her eyes gauged the distance between them in the car, and she scooted a little closer. You know. Just in case.
Xi'an smiled and nodded. "They'll want all the details." She made the turn toward Kitty's place. "I'll pick, yes. That's a good thing, alternating who picks the dinner arrangements."
"Awesome." The apartment was too close. Maybe just close enough. Kitty did have the tendency to move very fast when it came to sleeping with someone she was seriously interested in. Its canon! She thought of her dream. Slowing down was good. She had to prove this was serious and not an experiment. Xi'an deserved better than that.
That didn't make this any easier, though. By the time the car rolled to a stop she was biting her lip to avoid asking her in again. Breathing, breathing was good, "Just bringing the flowers in might make them speechless."
The apartment really was too close. But the night did have to end sometime. The thought of the twins seeing the flower made Xi'an smile. "They'll be ecstatic about the flowers," she said.
"Yeah...Now I just need to find out what kind is your favorite," Kitty leaned over, kissing Xi'an on the cheek, close enough to leave the option for a bit more open to the other woman.
Xi'an pulled into the parking lot just as Kitty kissed her cheek. She turned and looked at Kitty for a moment before kissing her on the lips.
Kitty shivered, her eyes closing as Xi'an kissed her. She sighed softly, a sound almost like a mewl and kissed back, trying to contain herself. It felt right. It felt not unlike correcting a big mistake. Most of all it felt wonderful.
Xi'an smiled when the kiss ended. It was a good way to wrap up a date.
Kitty grinned, and squeezed Xi'an's hand, "Good night, Xi'an..."
"Good-night, Kitty," Xi'an said softly.
Slipping out of the car, Kitty made her way to her door. She turned and waved at Xi'an, then slipped inside, and leaned against her door, "Holycrapthatwasawesome."
And Xi'an drove home to be interrogated.
