AJ hadn’t had a chance to connect with her friend lately. She’d been really busy with her boyfriend and work, setting up the new sales for the springtime and wrapping up the 2012 stuff. It was tiresome, and with the illness going around, everything was a bit wonky. But she agreed to meet up with Derpy for their Sunday afternoon shopping date at the Farmer’s Market. It’d be nice to catch up with her buddy, and to do her shopping for the week.
She was standing in front of the organic honey stand, sucking on a straw filled with honey, waiting for D to show up.
Deryn came bounding up to AJ -- her usual five minutes late. She was always a little late. She intended to be on time, but something always went wrong. Deryn wasn’t sure exactly what.
“AJ!” She called, bouncing up to the other girl with an easy, simple grin. “It’s been a while,” she said happily. Not that they didn’t see each other in passing at work, but that just wasn’t the same.
AJ turned at the sound of the voice. “Hi!” She grinned, holding out honey sticks. “It sure has. Are you ready to shop?” She asked, then leaned forward to give D a one-armed hug.
Deryn returned the hug with both arms -- she was always a little in-between casual and a little too tactile. “Always ready to shop,” the girl agreed with a nod that was possibly too determined.
“Great! I’ve got a long list this week. Lots of fruits and veggies.” AJ said, smiling. She released Deryn from the hug and turned to head toward the first booth. “How’s life been? Tell me everything.” She said, bringing the honey straw back to her mouth to suck the honey out.
“Oh, you know,” said Deryn, even though it was very obvious that no, AppleJack did not know. That’s why she was asking. “Well,” she said, considering the question for a moment --- only to trip over a rock and fall over. “Ergh,” she said, pushing herself back up from the ground.
“Oh!” AJ said, rushing forward to help D up to her feet again. “Are you all right?” She asked. AJ was pretty athletic herself, so she didn’t really understand how people could trip and fall all the time. Well, mostly it was just Deryn falling. A lot.
Well, she did that. It was kind of her thing. Laughing at herself was another thing she managed to do pretty well. With AJ’s help, she got back up to her feet, a silly smile on her face. “Every time,” she said, the closest she came to being exasperated.
AJ gave her a grin. “Good.” She helped to dust off D’s pants, then turned to head into the first stall. She said hi to the guy who owned it, then started looking through the wares. It wasn’t really a good season for stone fruits, but the citrus and apples looked amazing.
D rarely ever had a plan of what she wanted to buy, but instead always just looked around -- buying things to eat while they were walking around, and then going back to wherever she liked best at the very end. It was just how she did things. She paid the man for an orange immediately and worked at peeling it all in one go. “I’m thinkinggggg hm. Squash today,” she told her friend.
“Ooh, I bet we can find some amazin’ winter squash around here somewhere.” AJ said, giving D a grin. She turned to pick out some zucchini, thinking she really needed to put a garden in her backyard. Maybe Tonks would like that.
“So... my roommate and my brother are... something.” She said, making conversation. “I’m not sure what to think about that.” Walking into her brother’s house and catching her roommate wearing her brother’s robe (and nothing else) was a bit of a shock to her system.
“BigMac and Tonks?” Deryn said, holding her hands up to her face in surprise -- only to drop her newly peeled orange into the dirt. She looked crestfallen for only a short moment though, since the shop owner just gave her a look and handed her a new one. The smile she gave was sickeningly sweet. “How are you sure though?”
“Uh... I went to Mac’s place to meet with him about business stuff,” because D knew that AJ and Mac pretty much ran the family business together, and Granny was just a figure head now, “and she was already there. At eight in the morning. Wearing his bath robe.” AJ said, holding her hands as if blocking that image. “I mean, I’m glad he’s found someone he likes, but I don’t want to think about my brother... you know.” Yuck.
D, on the other hand, really wasn’t against the idea of imagining Mac in a bathrobe. Even if she wasn’t about to tell AJ so, he WAS cute.
“Akwarrrdddd,” she put in, quite wisely.
“Right?” AJ said, nodding. “I don’t really want to think about that. I mean, he’s a grown man, and she’s a grown woman, and they can make their own decisions, I just... ugh. He’s my brother.” She shrugged, and collected up some potatoes from the stand they were passing.
Deryn was eating her newly peeled orange as if it were an apple, and was nodding the entire time. “Yes,” she agreed, a little whimsically. It wasn’t like she knew what it was like to have siblings, anyway. “Well. Maybe they need a... uhmm.. signal. For when they’re... wearing bathrobes.”
“Like... a sock on the doorknob?” AJ asked, grinning. “Worked in college. I dunno if it’s practical in adult life.” She paid for the potatoes and then turned to lead them to another booth. “I’m glad he’s happy, though.”
Derpy followed, walking with a distinct bob in her step -- cheerful. “Or a tie. Or... one of those signs that says not to disturb. I don’t know what they’re called.” She nodded, still nibbling her orange, and checking out the cherries at the next booth. They didn’t look very in-season.
“But good.” She paused, looking at AJ. “Are you happy?”
“Uh... I think they’re called ‘Do Not Disturb’ signs.” AJ said. She was looking at the berries in nuts in the next booth with D, and agreed with the not-in-season assessment. “I am.” AJ added, blushing just a little bit. “I’m very happy. I’ve got John. I don’t need anything else.” She gave D a grin.
“I saw him the other day,” Deryn said, quite sweetly, even as she finished off her orange. “We talked.”
“Did you?” AJ grinned brightly. “He’s great, isn’t he? What did you guys talk about?” She asked, moving into the next booth. Citrus fruit! More of it! It was definitely the right time of year for that. Maybe she’d have to make some lemon cello. Or lemon bars.
What had they talked about? D considered it for a moment, holding a finger to her chin in thought. “You. Work. Kittens.”
“Kittens?” AJ asked, sounding a little surprised and a little interested. “What... what about kittens?”
“He wants kittens,” D explained, as if it were obvious. “A girl and a boy. To name... uhm. Shanna. And Jake. I think.” She remembered the oddest things.
“Wow. That’s so sweet.” AJ said. She thought she’d had a conversation with him about kittens, but now she couldn’t be sure. She turned to the next stall and collected some herbs for her cooking this week. “I love kittens.”
Deryn looked over the herbs, but as usual did not buy anything, although she seemed particularly interested in a bundle of parsley. “Everyone loves kittens.”
"Well, unless they're allergic or... heartless." AJ said, only mostly joking. She shrugged one shoulder, then paid for her herbs. Her arms were getting full now. "I'm in the mood for some frozen yogurt today. What do you think?"
Deryn laughed -- it was a giggle that was infectious. “Yes,” she agreed, possibly to everything. She held her hands out, offering to take some of AJ’s bags from her. She was a swell friend! “I’ll get strawberries on mine,” she said, thoughtfully.
It was absolutely an infectious giggle. AJ hadn’t been laughing before, but she was now. She beamed at her friend, and held one of the bags over. “I want mine with chocolate.” She said, beaming. “Chocolate chips on top!”
