The Cake Is Always A Lie!
Who: Vanyel and Alma
When: Thursday Afternoon
Where: The Grocery Store
What: Groceries and Science! And cake.
After school, there had been a meeting dealing with next years budgetary cuts, and it was still not certain if he was going to have a job in the district next year,so Vanyel was a little twitchy about that, but needed to stop off and pick up a few groceries before he went home to be properly concerned, and start sending off his CV so he headed to the market closest to school, grabbed a cart, and pulled out his coupon envelope, feeling kind of like an idiot as he reviewed them to determine which brands of things he was picking up this week.
"I fail to see the purpose of this exercise. We could simply..." A girl was pushing a cart, while holding a cell phone to her ear, "I know you need...what is a pita? Okay. Just send me the list, ma'am. Should I bring cake? Of course, ma'am."
She hung up the phone and looked at it in disgust, before pocketing it, "The cake is always a lie."
Cake was a lie? News to Vaynel, who was currently poking through the bakery selection, of all places. Lying cake, huh? Well, the one he was eying DID promise to be a healthy selection, or at least low fat.
Alma pushed her cart over. She looked out of place, wearing a pair of black slacks, a blue button up shirt and a white overcoat. Casual clothing? What was casual clothing? She peered at the cake, thinking perhaps she'd buy herself some!
Overcoat huh? So cake lady was either a doctor or scientist or something. That was interesting in and of itself. Van had come from school, so he at least didn't look as awful as he tended to on weekends, though his hair was beyond help as he' d learned years ago. Anyway, he gave her a llittle nod as he glanced through labels and dates. Let's see...angel food could work, and then dump frozen fruit on it. It'd probably have even thawed by the time he picked up Medren from his practice.
She glanced at him. She was much younger than one would think, judging just by her attire, "I recommend the red velvet."
"Do you think?" Van glanced over at it now. Oh wow, she did look pretty young to be a professional. "Cream cheese frosting does have merrits..."
"Its always a special treat, so I am fond of it." She picked up a red velvet cupcake and looked over the ingredients, "Though I am not fond of the corn syrup." She put it back. She didn't want to to launch into 'why corn syrup is bad'. It would probably bother the man. She felt a little uneasy, and glanced at him again, unblinkingly.
Not really bother him so much. There was a teenager at his house and he figured it was probably up to him to make sure that his brother's kid didn't end up diabetic or something. "That's true..." Vanyel looked at the label a little uncertainly. "I mean, I guess it could be worse somehow. It's kind of weird though, how much they all rely on that. I mean I'm pretty sure the recipes online don't have it involved." Probably. Most of what he ate and cooked came out of cans or the freezer so...
"No, it really could not be worse." Alma sighed, "With real sugar, your body knows when to stop, and you feel sated. With this corn syrup, your body never gives the stop signal, and you never feel sated. You keep craving." She paused, "It is really diabolical if you think about it." Another pause, "You do not want to know how much cyanide and other poisons are in much of the food in stores like this." She was still looking at him, finally blinking, "We have a garden where I live. It is rather self-sustaining." Which is why she didn't see the point of her presence.
"That's how they get you isn't it?" Vanyel sighed. "And really, it's everywhere. I mean, I work in a school, I see the crap they have in cafeterias. I'm not exactly the crunchy vegan type but really, it makes you wonder." There was something about all of this modern processed stuff that bothered him now that he was an adult. It just felt..off in ways he couldn't explain. "Oh gardens are awesome that way. I don't really have the space, but I've got mint."
"I like meat," Alma clarified. "We have a source for that. I live where I work." She smiled at him, warming up a little bit, "Mint is one of my favorite flavors."
"Goes with just about anything." Vanyel started warming too, since, well, he had a little thing with herbs that everyone thought was crazy. He didn't mention it much these days, since he wasn't all that great with them, but well, it was one of the holdovers from 'Lendel whose plant he had taken over years ago. All of the mint he grew was still descended from that plant, which was a little weird. "Of course, there's the part where it starts to overtake the earth, but better mint than zombies, right?"
kefkaq Alma blinked at him, "What do you know about.. never mind. Mint is a wonderful plant."
"What, zombies?" Vanyel asked, blinking at the conversation. "Not that much, really.Music directed Zombie Prom a couple years ago at my school but..." Pause. "Yeah, mint's amazing."
"I like cinnamon too." Alma might have a bit of a sweet tooth, which was why Caroline's constant back and forth on cake was so aggravating, "Do you know what a pita is?"
"Hm oh they're those greek things. Kinda thick tortilla things. For some reason, they stock those over by the delli, but they don't do that with the other bread." Why that was exactly, Vanyel would never know. "Stores are weird."
"That is strange," She agreed. "My boss wished me to pick some up, along with some other strange things." She pulled out her phone and showed him the list, "I have never had a fajita before."
"Let's see.." .Vanyel leaned over to get a look at the list. "Okay, fajitas involve tortillas filled with meat and sauted pepper things. At least I think it's usually peppers..." Unusual list for somewhere that had a garden really.
"So I need the tortillas then." She frowned, then sighed and hugged herself awkwardly, "Really, I could be spending my time better elsewhere."
mostly buy the same things anyway." Vanyel assured her with a little smile, since, after all, she could be one of his students and he had time to kill anyway.
"...I appreciate the help, thank you."
"Not a problem at all." And off they went to collect groceries!
