Pansy felt like her butt was hanging out of the damn robe. She was without her cell phone, so she was feeling really, really antsy. No texting, no internet, no gmail. Ugh. She was going stir crazy!
Today she was walking around, dragging her oxygen tank along behind her like some 80 year old woman. She had her inhaler in the pocket of the hospital robe, and she was looking for something to do. Then she remembered Katniss was here at one point with Prim. Even if Katniss wasn’t here currently, Prim would be. She headed for Prim’s room to check and see.
Katniss had only left her sister's side for biological needs. Food, bathroom, the occasional bit of fresh air on the roof. Otherwise, she was there for her sister, because that's what Katniss did. If Prim died, well there was an overdose of painkillers in her pocket...
Pansy leaned heavily against the doorway and knocked the open door with her knuckles. She was breathing hard, blue around her eyes and neck, and wearing a smile under the plastic tubing strung across her face that was delivering oxygen into each of her nostrils. “Hey.”
….she looked startled at how far Pansy had declined. The girl looked as bad as Prim did, and it terrified her. “Oh my god. Sit...!”
Pansy gave what she could of a smile, then stumbled into the room, dragging the oxygen tank along behind her. At least it had wheels, so it wasn’t heavy or anything. She flopped into a chair with a sigh. “Hi.”
“Hi... You look horrible.” Katniss couldn’t help but laugh. She hugged Pansy carefully. Not that she wanted to get sick, but because she didn’t want to hurt her. She was facing the very real possibility she could lose both Prim and Pansy. Her two Ps. She couldn’t stand the thought.
Pansy’s smile broke into a little laugh. “I look like shit. Blue definitely isn’t my color.” She wrapped an arm around her friend gently, thankful for the hug. “But you look good. I mean, surprisingly good. Hospital food is treating you well?”
“I’ve eaten worse,” Katniss replied, shrugging. It was a simple matter of fact. Hospital food was way better than the lean times - or ALL the times in the dreams. She could appreciate it. “I don’t know why I haven’t gotten sick.”
"Maybe it's in your genes." Pansy said, giving a half shrug. Half was all she had energy for. "I mean, the genes you don't share with Prim." Ugh, it was hard to breathe, hard to think. The walk to Prim's room really took it out of Pansy.
"Prim wouldn't be sick," she pointed out. "Or my mom." Some cold part of her thought it would be better if her mom didn't make it.
“Well, maybe... I dunno. Maybe you ate more oranges and have a better immune system.” Pansy said, giving a gentle shrug. “You’re strong, Kat.” She added. “Stronger than the rest of us.”
She smiled and for once accepted the compliment. She was strong even if she didn't always think so. Even if she felt like giving up she never, ever did. "I would give it up for my sister."
"I know you would. That’s just more proof about how strong you are.” Pansy said, lifting a hand to reach over and clap her friend on the shoulder. “She gets strength from how strong you are. I can tell.” She said, breathing long, slow and hard. She pulled her inhaler out and puffed on it.
"Take some too? I've got it to spare." She patted her hand on her friends, not shying away from the sickness or the ickies.
Pansy gave a little nod, smiling softly. “I’ll do the best I can. I’m not feeling much strength at the moment. Not sure how I’m gonna go get back to my room. It was exhausting getting here.”
“You look exhausted! I can tell. I kind of know exhausted.” Katniss laughed. She felt suddenly lighter. “I could carry you.”
“No, you don’t have to do that.” Pansy said, shaking her head a little. “I could call for a nurse. They’ve got wheelchairs... Or I can just sit and relax for a minute.” If she didn’t fall asleep. She really didn’t want to be confined to her bed, but she knew that was coming for her.
“I’ll push you then. Let me have some fun! I need some fun. I really need some fun.”
A mischievous smirk crossed Pansy’s features. “Okay, now we have to find a wheelchair.” She said, then struggled to pull herself up out of her seat.
Katniss grinned back, and got to her feet. “Sit.” She ran out of the room, and hunted down a free wheelchair. She was back within two minutes.
Pansy sat down for those two minutes and struggled to breathe. Her lips may have been more purple when Katniss came back into the room, but that didn’t stop Pansy from smiling. “Chair! You got a chair.” She climbed up from her seat to sit in the wheelchair, and picked up her oxygen tank to rest it in her lap. “Let’s go, Speed Demon!”
From the bed, Prim smiled reassuringly, and Katniss wheeled Pansy out of the room. Kicking off the floor, they sped down the hallway, past gurneys and patients and doctors. It was practically standing room only!
Pansy gave a laugh, wrapping her arms around the oxygen tank in her lap. She made sure her feet were up as Kaniss gave her a ride up and down the hallway, dodging other people and tables. She burst into coughs, but laughed between them as they played.
Katniss skidded the wheelchair around a corner, nearly barreling someone over. “Sorry!” She shouted over her shoulder, before pushing them down another hallway and to the elevator.
Pansy gave another laugh/cough, before reaching over onto a dining tray as they passed and snagging a couple of individually wrapped jellos. She pounded one fist triumphantly in the air as they scooted into the elevator and the doors closed with a ding. “Now all we need are some spoons!”
Katniss held up some spoons, and started wheeling them back to Prim’s room. Mission success!
