Who: Jack Harkness and Gwen Cooper
Where: Mini golf place
What: A date! Meeting up to have some fun playing mini golf
When: [backdated] January 8th, 2013
Rating: PG-13?
Status: INCOMPLETE

The mini golf place hadn't been too hard to find and it was actually a really nice day for an outing. Jack parked his car and made his way up to the small building, scanning the people who were wandering around. With any luck, his date for the day was already here. But if not, he didn't mind waiting for a while.

He knew perfectly well it wasn't really a date, but hey? Who knew what could happen? She seemed nice enough on the network and he was a sucker for a woman in uniform. Besides... she was already teasing him with comments about handcuffs. This was definitely a girl Jack wouldn't mind spending some time with. So they'd start with the mini golf, maybe grab a bite to eat if she was interested, and then just see where things led. If nothing else, at least he might make a new friend.

Oh why had she agreed to this? Gwen had a set rule for herself not to go visiting strange men from the internet. She was a cop, this was stupid, she even felt stupid. So then why Jack? She didn't even know what he looked like, she was even more stupid for asking.

Before she left, she took inventory: pocketbook, wallet, identification, insurance card, yes she was wearing deodorant, a few pieces of candy to suck on, and a can of mace which was tucked neatly into the inside of the blazer she wore. Ugh, and hair...well, it would have to do. This was entirely her fault for suggesting putt-putt. God, who suggested putt-putt? Nine year olds, that was who.

Gwen got out of her car and looked around the grounds, at the windmill and giant sculptures, searching for a man who looked like a Jack Harkness. Why hadn't she at least asked what he'd be wearing?

Jack continued scanning the crowd and broke into a grin when he spotted her. While he hadn't known what Gwen Cooper looked like, the way she was actively looking around made it pretty likely that it could be her. At any rate, it couldn't hurt to go over and ask.

"I don't suppose you're Gwen Cooper?" he asked, smiling warmly as he approached her. Jack made sure to keep a safe enough distance though. The last thing he wanted to do was to startle the woman, especially if it wasn't her.

It dimly occurred to Gwen that she was searching for someone who much less attractive than the one who strode up to her as if the ground beneath his feet ought to melt under his foot steps. When he smiled, Gwen's brain seemed to shut down momentarily as she tried to remember the last time she'd ever seen dimples as handsome as his. Dimples weren't meant to be handsome, they were meant to be cute or adorable...

Gwen shook her head. "I mean yes!" she remembered herself and smiled a grimacing smile as she offered over her hand. "And you must be Jack." Part of her hoped that this was not Jack as he might prove to be most distracting.

He laughed softly and nodded, taking her offered hand and shaking it. "Jack Harkness, at your service. And it's nice to meet you, PC Cooper. Or rather, I guess here in the States it's Officer Cooper. But I'm hoping for today, you'll let me get away with just calling you Gwen," he joked.

Jack motioned towards the building and then asked, "Shall we? You'll probably beat the pants off me since I've hardly ever played this game."

Somehow, Gwen had a feeling that Jack Harkness would find any excuse to have his pants off anyway.

Instead of letting him lead the way, Gwen moved toward the building on her own, hoping that Jack would just fall in step beside her. "I think Gwen would be the most appropriate," she agreed. "I'll pay since this was my idea," she insisted. "You can get the next one."

Taking the hint and smiling in slight amusement, Jack fell into step beside Gwen as they approached the building. "Fair enough... I do like that you're already thinking ahead to the nhext time," he teased.

Jack opened the door for Gwen (who says chivalry is dead?), and tucked his sunglasses into the inner pocket of his jacket.

Visibly relieved (and impressed) that he wasn't going to assert some sort of male dominance by insisting on paying, Gwen went gladly first and laid her debit card on the cashier's counter. They were given putters as well as their first round of golf balls. If he made jokes about balls, she might have to strangle him, although he was too handsome to strangle. "So, Jack," she said companionably, "What else do you usually do on a Tuesday night?"

"Sadly, not a whole hell of a lot of anything lately. Mostly just telly, games, reading, or playing with my pup. I've been pretty focused on work since moving out here, especially since it was a promotion and all. And I didin't really know many people around here." Jack shrugged and bounced his red golfball in the palm of his hand.

"It's part of why I registered to use the network. I figured I could meet some locals and actually make it feel more like a home out here, instead of just the place I live because I transferred over from England."

Meet some locals. It sounded like the sort of thing those advertisements said when they popped up on the side of the screen from Plenty of Fish or some other dating site.

"Oh," she said, her brows going up. "Transferred. What is it that you do again?" If she'd asked, she didn't remember. Call it a hazard of the job. Anyone she met outside of work who was not work, suddenly just became another face in the crowd. Not Jack, though, Jack was his own crowd it seemed and she felt irritated with herself for not remembering.

"At the risk of sounding like a giant kid, I work for a video game company. I'm the Art Director there... Bad Wolf Interactive. I oversee the art quality for all the games we develop and publish, including advertising and publishing material."

Jack stepped to the side so Gwen could putt first. "It's fun, keeps me busy, and I still handle some of the coding and tech problems when they're too overwhelmed."

A profession that Gwen was somehow surprised by. When he moved so she could putt, Gwen placed a ball down on the marker and began to line up her shot.

"There's nothing wrong with being a kid sometimes," she said, then sent the ball rolling toward the target. The first green was always easy and she was a little disappointed that she didn't get a whole in one. "I'm sure a kid could have made that putt," he remarked before she went to her ball and sunk it with a light tap of her putter.

Jack set his own ball down and lined up the shot. He glanced down towards the hole, then back to the ball as he tapped it with the putter. After tapping it in on the second try, he smiled and looked over to Gwen. "So what about you? Why did you decide to become a police officer?"

His smile could move mountains. Or melt them, she wasn't sure which. Maybe both. Gwen felt her cheeks flush and felt immediately stupid for being so frazzled over something as simple as a deep dimpled smile, so much so that she turned her attention back to the game. She took her ball to the next course and lined up her shot.

"It runs in the family," she answered. She wasn't bothered by the fact that she'd followed in her family's footsteps. "It's good for me, though," she added as she putted. The ball rolled down a slight slope, but did not go in. She walked after it. "I don't think I could sit in front of a desk all day long, even though a lot of our work is just paperwork."

He noticed the way she was blushing and grinned. She really was cute, even with the small gap between her front teeth. Something about it just made Gwen seem even more adorable.

"Sounds like me. My father was an artist and my mum ran a music shop. So I was always scribbling on things, making stuff, and just sort of getting into things. I think a lot of kids follow in their family's footsteps though. Or at the very least, their choice of career is influenced by their upbringing."

Jack waited for Gwen to finish her turn before putting his own ball. It took him a couple of short before he sank the putt and he marked the score on the small card.

"California isn't so bad though. In a lot of ways, it reminds me of home. Lots of beaches, tourists, and plenty of weird things to see."
