Alex smiled as he headed up to Neena’s room. She seemed to be doing better than most here, less sick, anyway, and he hoped that was still going on. He had been visiting her every few days, around work, and around seeing Lorna and a few other friends. Things were looking up, except for all the sick people.Which sucked.
Work was busy as heck.
As he stepped off the elevator and headed for her room, he smiled. His EMT bag never got more than glanced at, and he just was happy about that right now. Stepping into Neena’s room, he smiled. “Hello, gorgeous. How are you today?”
Neena coughed, looking up at him. Rest and relaxation had been doing a good job of keeping her well. There were limits, and when she took a turn for the worse, she meant it. Her skin was very pale, and she now had an oxygen mask. “Not gorgeous. Kind of crappy.”
“Even so, you look amazing.” He settled opposite her after securing the door, “How bad is it?” He gently ran a hand along her arm. He did not like how pale she was.
She put her hand over his, before looking at the next bed. “She’s sleeping. It’s not good. I can’t really sit up much.” Or talk for very long. Still, having Alex there was very comforting.
Alex smiled and reached over, rearranged her oxygen and then rapped the bed controls, gently raising the top of the bed. “Okay. Now, I have hot tea, which tastes terrible, but is good for you, and food for later.”
he gently touched her hand, talking softly.
She made a face at the mention of food, but didn’t say anything. She’d save her breath for when she needed it most. Even with the oxygen, she was having difficulty getting enough air, and her breathing was very loud. “I like tea. What did you do to it?” How could tea taste bad?
“It’s medicinal. Just drink it.” He brought out the warm cup and pried off the lid, then handed it over to her.
“Drink, and you’ll feel a little better.” He nodded.
If there was one thing Neena was tired of, it was medicine. She’d done it all by then: weird stuff she had to inhale, steroids, antibiotics, the works. The tea smelled horrible, and she didn’t want to drink it at all. She eyed the cup for a minute. It would take more energy to argue than drink, so she did as she was told, her face expressing disgust and annoyance she didn’t have the energy to complain about.
Then he produced a second cup. “This one should be more to your liking.” It was a herbal tea he had found, one that tasted just like whiskey, and supposedly just relaxed you. He’d fallen asleep when drinking it, so he thought it worked.
Neena shook her head. “No. That was almost too much to drink already.” She was breathing a little heavier, as though just drinking had tired her out. She moved the arm with the iv in it, to try to get the point across that she wasn’t manually drinking much anymore.
Alex nodded, then put the cup aside, covering it again so it would stay hot. “Okay. Just rest.” he gently took her hand and squeezed it. “Dante wanted to come in, but he had to stay and play with Max.”
“Poor guy.” Neena looked genuinely sad. She missed Dante terribly. He’d been her one constant companion over all the years. “He’s being good?” She hoped he wasn’t too much for Alex to handle. He was a very active dog.
Alex nodded. “He’s got a new hobby. He managed to escape doggy daycare and invade normal daycare, and he apparently has been quite useful, to the point where the people running it want to offer you a small fee to have him come there every few days.”
Neena chuckled, a raspy, broken sound. “Loves kids.” That was her boy. “Milo wanted to wait for ‘em. Waited too long. Bad luck for all of us.” She’d been thinking more and more about her husband recently. She missed him, but she had decided that she wasn’t ready to be reunited, yet. There was too much awesome stuff to do.
Alex nodded, wincing at that sound. “Max already does it, so it wouldn’t be a problem for me to take both of them, if you like.” Then he nodded, and gently squeezed her hand.
Neena nodded. That sounded like a good use of Dante’s time. “‘Kay”.
Alex smiled. “Now rest, and just close your eyes. You look wiped out.” he felt bad, because he had no way to help.
She squeezed his hand, nodding in agreement. Sitting up actually helped her breathe a little, so she didn’t bother trying to put the back of the bed down. She just closed her eyes and tucked the arm with the IV back under the covers..
Alex watched and talked a little about the dogs, and let his voice trail off as she slept. he’d stay awhile, and let her sleep, and then head out.
FIN.
