Lorna was hauling three large suitcases behind her as she went from the driveway to the house. She waved goodbye to Thor, and let Champion out of his carrier. He launched as though he had been spring loaded, and tore off toward the orchard. She smiled, then dragged her bags up to the door and let herself in.
She took a deep breath, inhaling the familiar scent
Big Mac smiled as he came out of the kitchen, the pie cooking behind him filling the area with scent. “Hello, Lorna.” He smiled and opened his arms. “C’mere.”
He was very glad to see her and was sad she had been having such a bad time.
Lorna dropped her bags and hugged him, holding onto him as tight as she could. He was big and warm, and had been nothing but wonderful to her. She felt truly lucky to have so many wonderful friends who cared about her. “Hey Mac. I missed you.”
He kissed her hair and stroked her back as he hugged her tight, lifting her off the ground for a moment. He set her to her feet and smiled softly. “I missed you, too, Lorna. The house was quiet without you.”
He stroked her hair as he stepped back finally and nodded. “How are you, really?”
Her face fell visibly when he asked. “Terrible. I’m really, really terrible.” She sighed, pushing her hair out of her eyes. “I went to San Francisco Thursday, which was a major mistake. I came back with two suitcases full of yarn, and the utter certainty that I’ll never see my parents again. It looks like-” she stopped, shaking her head. She had no context for what she’d seen. “It’s the worst thing I’ve ever seen.”
Big Mac hugged her again. “I’m sorry. At least you’re home now?” He hugged her close. “And you won't be alone, no matter what.” he nodded.
“You’re a strong woman and you’ll get through this.”
The second hug did her in. She wrapped her arms around Mac as tight as she could and started to bawl. Everything that had happened since Friday: the dreams, the fighting, the fear and uncertainty, all of it fought to be released. She felt as though she had a black hole in her chest that was tearing her insides apart. The crying was painful, her entire body was reacting to its intensity.
Big Mac held her and rocked her, slowly sinking them to the floor, holding her close as he rubbed her back. “Got you, dear one. Just let it all out.” he gently held her, sorrowing that she was sad, and determined to help her.
Lorna just held onto him until she couldn’t cry anymore. She had the hiccups, and her face was puffy and red. “My everything hurts. I’m sorry, Mac.” She let go of him slowly, pushing her hair back and wiping her face, then her hands on her pants.
Big Mac held her and rocked her, and listened, and he smiled softly. “It’s okay. We have food, water, and a shower. All can be had.” he nodded to her and gently lifted her in his arms. “where first?”
“Water. I’m not really hungry.” She put her arms around him again, feeling empty and used up. “I really wish they would get found. Even if they are dead. I just want to know, you know?”
He nodded. “I hope they will get found soon.” he hugged her close. “Come on.” He carried her to the living room and settled her down, then got her a large glass of nice chilled water. “Drink and rest.” and he climbed into the couch and held her.
She took the water and supped it, snuggling against Big Mac after she put the glass down. “I’m so mad at my stupid uncle for cheating on my aunt, and for telling her now. He’s such a first class jerk.” She set her head on his chest, sighing. Stupid cheating uncle.
Big Mac nodded, listening. “Not cool. And not right. Sounds like. I’m sorry.” He stroked her hair and her back, gently rocking her. He hoped she wouldn’t hurt from this. he hated his friends hurting.
She calmed as he stroked her. “I wish I could make it all better for everyone.” She snuggled into his chest a little more. “Tell me something good, Mac. Something nice that’s happened.”
“I had a sweet date night with Tonks, with food and cuddles? I brought in some awesome apples and oranges from the orchard? He hmmed. “The other house I have now is fully set up. I just have to figure out what to do with it.”
Lorna nodded. “Awwww, yay for a date and apples. We should make cookies. You can take some to Tonks, if you want.” She wanted Big Mac to have a sweet girlfriend. He was a good guy. He deserved someone to love him.
Big Mac smiled. “I’d like that. We can make several batches and give some to each of our friends! I have lots of makings.” he grinned at her and kissed her nose, then hugged her again.
She smiled at the nose kiss, kissing him lightly in return. “I’m so glad to know you, Mac.” She slid off his lap, and went toward the kitchen, determined to focus on something good.
