Severus didn’t like hearing Daisy coughing. He was sitting in the living room with the little girl curled up on the sofa, leaning against him. There was a big stack of books to his right, and an even bigger stack on the floor. He’d been reading to her for hours now, running his hand over her hair, petting her gently and frowning at the fever running through her. She would cough, whimper, and then settle back down against him every few minutes.
And so it went until about nine o’clock, when Severus decided it was time to do something. He sat up a little and settled her into his arms, then climbed off the sofa to go find wherever it was Romana had gotten off to.
While Severus was taking care of their daughter, Romana had been on the phone with doctors and things, trying to figure out if any of them would see her. None of them would come to the house. They all just said the same thing. To go out and get her tylenol or something. That just wasn’t good enough. She needed to do something for her daughter. When they both came up the stairs, she was just finishing up her phone call.
“Sorry, I was bothering you both? How is she feeling? No one is going to come out here this late at night.”
“No, not at all,” Severus said, though there was a hint of worry in his voice. He leaned over so that Romana could feel her daughter’s forehead. “She’s a bit more feverish now. I was thinking perhaps a cool bath, some tylenol, and bed?” He asked. He wanted to talk to Romana more about it where little ears couldn’t overhear.
She put her hand on Daisy’s forehead and frowned. It was getting worse. “That sounds good. Hopefully she’ll feel a bit better if she can fall asleep.” And she really hoped that she could. Though maybe they should have her sleep in their bed for the evening. If that didn’t work, they would have to take her to the emergency room or something. “I’ll go run the bath, you just stay with her.”
“Sleep is important.” Severus spoke, gently. He nodded, and turned to follow after Romana toward Daisy’s bathroom. He could undress her in there while Romana ran the water.
“Daddee,” Daisy spoke, her voice a slow slur of sick and tired, “I don’t wanna take a baff.”
“It’s all right, Sunshine.” Severus said, giving her a little squeeze. “It’ll make you feel less hot.”
Into the bathroom, Romana started the bath, making it cool enough but warm enough so that she wouldn’t freeze or anything. “You’ll feel better, love. Would you like one of us to get into the bath with you?” she didn’t want to leave her alone or anything.
Daisy nodded, then brought both hands out to reach for her Mommy. Severus nearly lost his balance in the sudden grab. He leaned over and let Daisy spill into her mother’s arms.
“I guess she wants you,” he said, playfully. Though there was still concern in his voice.
Poor Severus. Romana caught her daughter in her arms and tried not to laugh. “Seems so. All right baby girl. Let’s get you undressed, and then I’ll get in the tub with you.” Carefully she undressed her poor sick baby and then once the tub was filled, she climbed in with her.
Severus couldn’t help but watch his wife undress and climb into the tub. He closed the lid on the toilet and sat down, keeping the women company while they bathed. “Does that feel better?” He asked, reaching down to run his hand over Daisy’s forehead. She still felt hot.
Taking the washcloth, she started to pour water over her skin that wasn’t under the water. Romana frowned a bit, and put the cold cloth on her forehead afterward. “I really hope this works.” She didn’t want to take her baby to the hospital, but maybe they should.
“I’m sure she’ll be all right.” Sev said, reaching into the tub to touch the washcloth on Daisy’s forehead. He was worried, though, watching his wife and his little girl in the tub.
Poor Daisy was so very sleepy, and leaned her head back against Romana’s chest.
“We’ll give it a few minutes, and get her in her pajamas, then take her temperature again before bed, hmm?”
Romana rubbed Daisy’s poor back as they tried to cool her down. Maybe the bath wasn’t cool enough. She hoped the tylenol worked. It had to. “All right. Maybe you should get us both some towels, please..” For when they were ready to get out of the tub. Any time her girl was sick, she always felt the worst.
“Of course.” Severus climbed up from his seat on the closed toilet, and left the bathroom to get the Tylenol and a couple of soft, fluffy towels. He gave the girls a few minutes together in the cool water, and then came back in to help them out.
“I brought the Tylenol.” He said, setting it on the counter.
“Thank you, love..” Romana kept doing what she was doing, just trying to cool Daisy down as much as she could. When Severus brought the towels, she slowly got up onto her feet, holding onto Daisy. She held her up while Severus dried her off, and then handed her over to her daddy so that Romana could dry off and drain the tub.
Sev wrapped Daisy in the towel, and slowly carried her to her bedroom. He set her on her bed while he found her some pajamas, then helped her get dressed. It was scary when she was sick. He hated it.
Following behind, Romana dried off quickly and then went after them. She went to get dressed too, putting her clothes back on if only because she figured they would be taking her somewhere. “How’s she feeling? We should put her in bed.”
“She feels a bit better,” Severus said, getting Daisy snuggled in under the covers. “But only a little bit.” He added, running his hand over his daughter’s forehead.
Daisy started coughing. She seemed unable to catch up with her breath.
As soon as Romana was about to say that they should let her rest, she started to cough and her mother frowned. “We should probably take her somewhere. I don’t like the sound of this at all. Even if it’s late, we should go. She needs.. I don’t know what exactly, but she needs something.”
Severus nodded, frowning. “You get her bundled up. I’ll make a few phone calls.” He had pull in a couple of doctor’s offices and some urgent care centers. He swept out of the room, and the only thing missing from his dream self was the rustle of black robes.
Romana scooped up Daisy and then went to get her shoes on, and then her coat. Daisy complained that it was too hot for her to wear a jacket, but Romana insisted. Two seconds later, Daisy would be freezing cold anyway. Once her little girl was all bundled up, she went to find her husband.
Severus was on the phone in the living room, thanking a doctor on the other end. He turned to see his wife and daughter come into the room, looking relieved. “I’ve got us an appointment at the Urgent Care Clinic. They’ll see her as soon as we get there. Apparently, this thing is going around, hitting people hard.”
She looked quite relieved when Severus said they could go right in. “Really? Lots of people are sick? That’s not good.” Romana certainly didn’t want to get sick. If they all got sick, then who would take care of Daisy? It didn’t matter right now. All that mattered was getting her to the doctor. “Let’s go, shall we?”
“Yes.” Severus leaned over to kiss Daisy’s forehead, and then led them out the door.
