What: delivering cookies
Where: Navi and Pete’s place
When: 1/12
Warnings: intense adorableness
Status: complete

Lorna’s scooter putted to a stop in front of the Wisdom house. The cookies she’d baked to replace the ones she’d eaten the previous week were tucked safely into her purse. She slid off her scooter, shivering in her coat. She missed her scarf. Stupid monkeys.

She tromped up to the porch, knocking on the door. She knew that Navi would probably cheer her up, and she’d much rather celebrate Navi’s baby than be sad about her parents being missing.

Navi was curled up in an oversized armchair, reading a book and drinking some tea when she heard the knock on the door. Bouncing up, she grinned, excited to have a visitor. She opened the door and hugged Lorna, wings fluttering happily.

Yeah, wings were awesome. Lorna was a little jealous. “Hi!” She hugged Navi tight, smiling at the show of affection. Hugs were awesome. “How are you doing?”

“I’m good, how’re you?” Navi wasn’t sick and hoped Lorna wasn’t either. She motioned for her to come inside, beaming and bouncing a little. She wanted her friend to make herself at home.

Lorna shrugged. “I brought cookies!” She smiled, making her way inside before digging into her purse. “Not jammie dodgers, because I ate those, but I did make shortbread thumbprints with jam, and chocolate chocolate chip.” She had a few dozen chocolate cookies at home, because they were the only thing that seemed remotely appealing to eat when she wasn’t high. “It’s crazy here, I almost stayed in Berkeley. Everyone’s sick.”

“Oooh, these are good. I’m excited.” Navi grinned broadly, ready to eat a few of them herself. “And yeah, it’s kind of scary here right now. I’m not going out much.”

“I bet.” Lorna nodded. “It’s pretty intense.” She grabbed a cookie and nibbled at it. “Where’s Pete?”

“Out getting me some more ginger ale and some stuff for dinner.” Navi plopped back down in her chair, nibbling happily. “How’re the plants? I painted some more kobolds for you!”

“They’re doing good. I haven’t been to the shop in a bit, but I know the succulents will be okay.” She was a little worried about her project, but this just wasn’t the time to check on her custom marijuana plant. “I would love to see them, I bet they’re adorable!” Lorna grinned, putting her half cookie down. “It must be nice having someone around to do that kind of thing for you. I can make sad eyes at my roommate, but it’s not the same.”

“He insists, he thinks if I get sick, the baby will get it too.” Navi sighed, shaking her head. But then she was in her Craft Bin (it said so on the lid!) and rifling around. She’d painted some kobolds, a couple of beholders, standard stuff to put in a model town, really.

“I think he’s right? I do know you shouldn’t get sick, if you can help it, baby or not. But he can’t get sick, either. Because he’ll give it to you.” She scooted closer, to look at the figures. “Oh! You even did all the little eyes on the beholders! I can’t wait to get these guys in the model!”

“Well, yeah, they’re beholders! I have to get the eyes right, or they’re not realistic enough!” Navi shook her head. “Yeah, he can’t get sick either, but I don’t know if he can get sick. He runs warm.” She didn’t tell Lorna the specifics, just in case Pete didn’t want her to.

Lorna mulled that over for a minute. “I don’t know, people who might otherwise be immune have got it. I know Scott’s out sick, and he should be immune to a lot of human diseases.” Of course, it could be unrelated, but when did shitty things avoid happening to Summerses? She was only into the first year of her masters in dream time, and she knew that much.

Navi shook her head. “I hope he’s okay.” She didn’t know him, but Navi would never ever wish ill upon anyone. She was worried about Pete suddenly, and hoped he’d come home soon.

Lorna nodded. “Well, that sucked all the joy right out of this, and honestly, there are tiny kobolds involved. That should be impossible.” She picked one up, looking at it closer. “I’m sure he’s okay. He’s got that protective tar coating on his lungs. I’m going to guess that’s why I’m not sick, too. Smokers win again.” She smiled, hoping to cheer Navi back up.

That made Navi smile. “Darn it, here I was just smoking after unfs. I should’ve picked it up more. But that would probably stink for me because I need lots of air to fly and stuff.” Navi swung her legs, nibbling on another cookie.

“Is flying cool?” That was the only good thing about the dreams. She really hoped that she’d get enough of her powers to fly, soon.

“I love it, always have, though. Planes, roller coasters, always liked being on them. It kind of makes sense now.” Navi hovered a little bit to show Lorna that she could do it while big, too.

Lorna grinned when Navi hovered. That was sooo cool. "So are you a fairy or something?"

Navi blushed, then nodded. “Yeah. In my dreams I am, so I guess I am here, too.” Saying it out loud felt good. She wanted to scream it from the rooftops sometimes.

“Neat!” Lorna said, enthusiastically. “Can you do other stuff?” The dream stuff was so awesome and crazy. Even if most of her dreams were stupid and dramatic.

“I can go tiny? And I can find most things. And I’m really good at strategy and stuff. I mean, I’ve always had a lot of interest in weird weapons, especially old timey ones, but now I’m really really good with ‘em.” She felt that probably came from guiding the Hero of Time around in her dreams.

“Neat! All I know is stupid stuff about rocks.” Lorna made a face. Rocks were the most boring thing in existence. They just sat there, being composed of minerals. “Do you and Pete dream about the same world?”

Navi shook her head. “Nope. Pete’s world that he dreams about is pretty modern, but the one I dream about is sort of Ren Festy.” Lots of horses and cobblestone paths and swordfighting. “And rocks are kind of neat! Without them, we wouldn’t have anything to stand on!” Trust Navi to be eternally optimistic.

“That is true. And they even grown and shrink and stuff, so they’re not tooo boring.” Lorna actually wasn’t quite sure where she stood on the ‘Rocks, cool or not?’ issue. “My dreams are pretty modern, too. With robots and carnivorous islands.” She grinned a little. The man eating island was still hilarious.

“Wow, a man eating island? That’s … okay, that’s pretty neat. I like mine, though. Dragons and swords and horses and other fairies and woodland creatures.” She nibbled on another cookie, thinking fondly of her dream world. But she liked the one she was in just as much - she still had Link, and Pete was there too!

Lorna smiled. “No wonder you like Dungeons and Dragons so much, it’s like your dream world!” That would be pretty sweet, actually. “It would be fun to be able to do magic, I bet.”

“Fewer beholders. More people made of rocks. Oh, man, I bet you’re like, princess of the Gorons!” Navi’s eyes went wide.

“Rock people?” Lorna guessed. “I don’t think I am. But maybe. Maybe I was stolen from the rock people at birth.” She giggled a little. That would actually be pretty neat.

“You’re the princess of the Gorons!” Navi giggled, bouncing a little in her seat. If she could’ve drawn, she would’ve sketched what the Gorons looked like, but she couldn’t.

Lorna laughed, not because she got the joke, but because it felt good, and Navi was obviously certain she was being hilarious. It was a good enough reason for her. She felt all the worry and stress lighten for a few minutes. It was great. “Too bad I don’t have a crown. I’ll have to make myself one.”

“Out of rocks!” Navi grinned, sitting on the edge of the chair so she could flap her wings. “Well, maybe out of seashells or something, rocks would hurt.”

“I could have rocks held together with, like, a metal band or something. So it looks all rocky, but the inside is smooth.” Lorna grabbed her phone and opened a drawing program, making a very rough diagram, which was a circle with big grey blobs around its outside border. “Like this!”

“Oh, that’s perfect. I wish I could draw.” Even a big circle with grey blobs was a bit much for her. She might have known more than most people and she might have been able to find anything, but drawing? That was hard.

“I do too. This is probably my best work.” She shifted through to pictures of other things she’d sketched. Like the sweater with elephantitis. “I have some pretty terrible drawings on here.”

They made Navi laugh. “At least you can tell what they are! That’s a shirt of some kind! My drawings sort of look like midway through I had a seizure of some sort and then you can’t tell what they are at all.” Navi wrinkled her nose and laughed.

Lorna snorted at that, then broke into full fledged laughs. “Awww, I do better with a touchpad. It’s like fingerpainting! Maybe that would help?”

“Maybe! I don’t know, I’m just really awful at drawing, I think. I’m good at trivia.” She shrugged to herself, not really minding that she was awful at drawing. She had her own weird strengths.

“Oh, I’m crap at trivia, unless it’s plant related. Or biology in general. What kind of stuff do you know about?” Lorna was intensely curious.

“Everything?” Navi felt sheepish. “I’m always reading weird books and I’m kind of a sponge and I think it’s only gotten worse since I got be’fairy’d. I mean, I know where everything in this house is. Everything.” Right down to Pete’s favorite boxers (and she was going to have to ask him why, exactly, they were on top of his lamp).

“That sounds really useful. I’m always losing stuff. It’s a hazard, since I treat my anxiety with pot.” Misplacing things was kind of the name of the game. “You must kick butt at Trivial Pursuit.”

“Any trivia game is my favorite. I love pub trivia.” Navi bounced a little. “I won free beer every night for a year once.” It wouldn’t be useful now that she was pregnant, but at the time it had been awesome.

“Is that how you and Pete met?” There was a story Lorna was eager to hear. They worked well as a couple, but how they had hit it off she couldn’t guess.

“Oh, no.” That made Navi laugh. “We were talking online and there’d been a problem with the cell phones that got a lot of people’s texts crossed, and I mentioned that I was sad I hadn’t gotten random boobs and he was sad too so I got his number and sent him mine. Then we got to texting a bit and he asked me out and that was that.” Navi believed in love at first sight, and the moment she’d seen him looking rumpled and dour in the pub with his hair askew, she’d wanted to hug him and never let go.

“Awwww. Hooray for magic boobs.” She grinned. “I’m so happy for you both. When is the baby due?” At heart, Lorna was a romantic, and she loved happy endings for people in real life.

“Oh, not for another eight months or so.” Navi ran her fingers restlessly over her flat stomach. “Pete wants a whole football team. I sort of hope it’s triplets, then I could just have a few of those.” She giggled, knowing she was teasing.

Lorna laughed. “I think you’ll be happier in the long run if it’s just one. You can just teach it to be the best football player, and make the rest of the team its minions.” She grinned. “I’ll totally have to make you blankets and booties and stuff.”

“Oh, I want a few. I was an only child and I hated it. I want at least four.” Navi blushed. Even on the having a passel of kids front, she and Pete were united. “But I’d love that! Do you know how to knit? I should learn.”

“I don’t like being an only child either.” Lorna noted. Of course, most of the siblings she knew in person thought being an only child would be the best, but they were all dumb. “Four’s a good number. It’ll keep you both busy. And no, I crochet, because it’s easier. I could totally teach you.”

“That would be awesome!” Navi couldn’t help but bounce a little, excited at the prospect of a new hobby to conquer. She grinned, leaning against her chair happily. “Pete is set on eleven, but I think after four, he’ll probably start crying and ask to get his tubes tied. Four is a good amount, I think.”

Lorna nodded. “I think it’s perfect.” She dug into her bag and produced a spare hook and ball of yarn. “I, uh, have teaching supplies on hand.” She looked sheepish. Lorna was always ready to spread the good word of yarn.

Navi’s eyes went wide, like a little kid on Christmas. “You’re the awesomeest,” she squeaked, moving to sit closer to her.

Lorna grinned and handed over the equipment. “Ok, so, you start with a slip knot,” She made one slowly and slid it onto her own hook. She loved to share her passions, and Navi was her most adorable student.
