Who: Nymphadora Tonks and Sam Winchester
When: Friday night before Christmas
Where: Restaurant and movie
What: A date
Rating: Low
Status: Complete!
Tonks arrived at the address Sam had text her more nervous than she thought she would be, the previous ‘date’ had almost been easier because of the unusual nature of it. They’d all been able to joke about it which was a good thing, but there hadn’t been much time to get to know each other one on one. Though she had managed to have a small conversation with Sam so she knew he was fairly easy to chat to.
AJ had been shopping with her earlier that day and they had managed to find a nice dress that AJ assured her looked lovely and not over the top or too ‘try-hard’ which was Tonks’ main worry.
Now waiting for Sam she hoped he thought the same, she liked him and if nothing else, she hoped they could at least be friends.
The address was to a mexican restaurant that John had recommended to Sam. Sam didn’t know that Tonks was roommates with John’s girlfriend, AJ, but would find that coincidence to be hilarious when he found out.
Anyway, he showed up to the spot dressed nice, but not too nice. It was a casual second date, even though the first had been so unusual, he was looking forward to meeting up with her and getting to know her better. Who knows? Maybe sparks would fly. Though, Sam could count the number of dates he’d been on on one hand since Jessica died.
He felt a little nervous as he waited by the front door for her, and when he saw her, he broke into a smile. She looked really nice. Now he wished he’d put on a nicer shirt. “Tonks?” He said, lifting his hand to wave and get her attention.
As Sam caught her attention Tonks smiled and waved back as she headed towards him, “Sam, hi” she said as she reached him, “How are you?” she asked.
“This place looks great, I never even knew it was here” she told him with a grin. It looked very welcoming from the outside and Tonks thought it seemed like the kind of place that would be cosy and comfortable inside.
“Hi.” He said, unsure how he was supposed to greet her. A kiss to the cheek? A hug? A handshake? Those all seemed wrong. All of them. He tried not to let it make him feel uncomfortable. “A friend of mine recommended it,” he said, then moved to let her in through the front door and followed behind.
“He said he brought a friend here and felt uncomfortable because it was so romantic inside,” he added, then tinged slightly pink. “Thought it might be a good place for a first date. Or, well, second date.”
Tonks wasn’t sure either so simply followed Sam’s lead and stepped into the restaurant when he held the door for her, smiling her thanks.
“Ah I see” she replied before grinning slightly mischievously, “I’m pretty sure we have uncomfortable situations covered already” she said, thanks to dear Fred, “Which means things can only get better, it takes the pressure off if you look at it that way don’t you think?”
Sam gave a little chuckle. “Definitely. I’m a little less afraid to mess things up royally. They would have been completely screwed up after our last date.” He led the way up to the hostess. Soon, they were seated at a table in the back with menus. Sam perused the items on the menu, mostly written in Spanish.
“Think I’ll have the number three.” A plate of food, a sampling of the different things they had there. “And a Corona.” The restaurant was walking distance from the movie theater, if that was their next stop.
Tonks also looked at the menu, not taking too long to chose, “Number four please” she requested, similar to Sam’s but with different samplers, “And a Corona for me too thanks” she told their server with a smile.
Turning her focus back to Sam she asked, “So Sam what is it you do in Orange County?” Their conversation on date number 1 had basically consisted of agreeing that Fred was an idiot who needed to be taught a lesson even if it was an amusing idea in theory. There hadn’t been much getting to know you talk.
The server wandered away from the table with their orders and another employee--maybe a busser?--brought them some chips and salsa, and a couple of ice waters. Sam reached forward to take a chip, wanting something to occupy his hands while they talked. “I’m a lawyer,” he said. He wondered if he’d mentioned it the last time they went out. They hadn’t had a whole lot of chance to talk. “I work with Helen Magnus. Mostly I spend my days fighting with paperwork at the courthouse.”
Tonks nodded, “Ah of course I remember you did say you were a lawyer” she told him as the conversation clicked in her mind, “Do you have an interest in any particular area?” she asked. She got on fairly well with most lawyers she had come across, they accepted the need for people in her line of work and, after all, Tonks was very good at what she did.
“Well, I was working in estate law up in the bay area when I lived up there.” He said, shifting his weight in his chair and giving her a little smile. “But it started to get depressing and I wasn’t sure I wanted to continue with that line of work. There wasn’t a whole lot of room for advancement where I was.” He explained, gently. “Working with Helen Magnus has been a bit of a dream come true. I can actually help people, rather than sort out their messes.”
The waitress came over as Tonks was about to reply, she set the drinks down then nodded at them before moving off. Tonks smiled at him before nodding, “It’s great that you’ve been able to find a job that you enjoy so much. It’s rare now I think” she said, “Have you always had an interest in the law?”
Sam gave a little nod, lifting the Corona to sip from the bottle. “I’ve been interested in it for a long time,” he said, softly. “But tell me more about your day to day. Bounty hunting?” He asked with a grin. “Sounds exciting.”
Tonks laughed softly, “It’s not all that exciting” she assured him, “There’s a lot of watching and waiting. Making sure I’ve found the right person before I bring them in and hoping they don’t resist when I do” she added with a wry smile. She was lucky none of her targets had ever gotten too violent, she knew it was always a possibility though.
“Do they often resist?” He asked. Was she in danger every day? It sounded kinda like his dream life. He spent a lot of that time watching and waiting.
“Sometimes. I mean they were desperate enough to skip bail so they aren’t overly keen on being taken back in” she replied pragmatically, “Especially by me. But it helps that most of them underestimate me”
“Yeah?” Sam asked, breaking into a grin. “Gotta admit, I don’t blame them. I probably wouldn’t expect a beautiful woman like you to be rough and dangerous.” He said, giving a little shrug as he lifted his beer for a gulp. “No offense,” he added quickly.
Tonks smiled and blushed a little, “None taken” she assured him, “It works in my favor to be honest. I’ve luckily never had much trouble, unlike some people I know”
“Yeah? You have friends that get into trouble?” It was sounding more and more like the way his dreams worked. He wasn’t sure what to think about that.
She nodded, “I know a couple of people who have had knives pulled on them luckily no firearms which is a miracle really” she told him, “But it’s part of the job. Everybody gets the same training, we know the risks and hopefully how to handle them so nobody gets hurt”
“Hopefully.” Sam responded, watching her. His face fell a little. He didn’t like the idea of her having a knife or a gun pulled on her. “Have you ever considered going into a different line of work?”
“Not really” she admitted honestly, “I’m good at what I do. And I scout out the marks before I approach them which means I have a pretty good idea of how somebody is going to react. Don’t worry, I’m careful” she added reassuringly.
“Good.” Sam said, though he was still a little worried about her. He shifted in his chair. “Is this what you thought you were going to do when you were a kid?” He asked.
The waitress brought their food out, said ‘careful, hot plate,’ and set the meals down in front of them.
Once the waitress left Tonks shook her head with a chuckle, “Definitely not” she replied, “When I was very little I wanted to be a teacher according to my mother. But I’ve never really had a definite idea about what I wanted to do. I kind of fell into the bounty’s when I travelled for a while”
Sam nodded, lifting his fork to poke at his food. It looked delicious. He took a bite while she was talking and chewed thoughtfully. “Teaching? That’s a noble profession. Your mother’s a teacher?” He asked.
“Oh no” she answered with a shake of her head, “My mother doesn’t work anymore. She stopped when I came along and never went back. She would agree with you though, about it being a noble profession I mean. She has a list of things she would rather her daughter do. She tells people I’m in law enforcement” she added with a smile.
Sam gave a chuckle. “Well, you sort of are.” He responded gently. “I think raising children is a terribly important job, too,” he added, supporting her mother’s decision to work inside the home, rather than out of it. “I’m sure she’s very proud of you, nevertheless.”
She nodded, “I guess so” she agreed, though her mother made it sound more like she was a police officer than a bounty hunter, “I can’t imagine ever being happy staying at home like my mom but I guess anything can happen” Tonks smiled, “I think she is. How about your parents? They must be proud”
Sam paused. That was certainly an interesting topic. “I don’t have a lot of contact with my family,” he said, avoiding the subject. “It’s been a long time since I’ve spoken with my dad, and my brother... he’s around, but we’re not close.” He wished they were closer. “Do you have any brothers or sisters?”
“I’m sorry” she said, sensing that it wasn’t an easy topic for him. She shook her head, “I’m an only child” she replied, “But I do have some close friends who might as well be family. My housemate, AJ, is kind of like how I imagine the perfect sister would be” she grinned.
“Really?” Sam grinned, then paused. “AJ? She wouldn’t be dating John Jones, would she?” he asked. Since Sam hadn’t been to Tonks and AJ’s place, he hadn’t seen AJ, he didn’t know if she was the one dating his friend John. If she was, that would make it a very small world.
Tonks put her drink down, “Yes that’s her” she confirmed a smile starting to appear on her face, “Do you know John?” she asked, unknowingly mirroring Sam’s thoughts about it being a small world.
“Yeah, actually, I do.” Sam said, then gave a soft chuckle. “That’s so weird, what are the odds? Yeah, John and I bumped into each other at the courthouse, and we’ve been buddies ever since.” It was a somewhat strange story, but they had a few things in common. “John’s a good guy. He’s the one who signed me up for your friend’s blind date thing.”
Tonks laughed lightly, “Wow” she said, “That is a crazy coincidence. AJ and John are going to find it amusing I’m sure” she added with a smile.
“Oh, I’m sure they will.” Sam said, grinning and nodding. “We should go out with them. The four of us. Think it’d be fun?” AJ and Tonks seemed to get along really well, and Sam and John were drinking buddies, so naturally the four of them would have a good time.
“I think it would be great fun” Tonks nodded, thinking AJ would agree too. “I hope you didn’t hold it against John for setting you up on the blind date, I really should have known Fred would be up to something” she added with a wry smile.
Sam gave a chuckle. “It led us here, so how can I be mad at him for it?” He asked. They were nearly finished with dinner now, and Sam glanced at his watch to check the time. “Do you want to head over to the theater?” He asked. “Catch a movie?”
“Sounds great” she nodded with a smile, “I think theres a new action movie out that looked fun from the trailers”
“I like action movies.” Sam said with a smile. “We’ll just catch the next showing over at the theater.” He liked this. It was laid back, just the way Sam liked it. He could tell that Tonks was a fun girl, and that she liked things calm and easy-going, too. She was a beautiful, smart, fun girl, and he really liked spending time with her.
Tonks liked it too, she felt under no pressure with Sam and enjoyed the light easy way they talked together. She liked his company and found the conversation flowed well. She was hopeful their relationship would continue to feel this natural.
