I don’t think I’m getting back to sleep, no.
Who: Kitty and Navi, ft Lockheed
What: Kitty can’t sleep, and she and Navi get some Coffee
When: Night after the Sentinel thing
Where: A coffee shop
Status: complete
Rating: PG-13
Kitty was sore, and tired, and her mind just could not deal with the fact that they’d just fought one of the monsters responsible for killing sixteen million mutants on Genosha. She didn’t know and she didn’t care how it might be covered up. She just wanted to get some rest and deal with it in the morning.
Despite that she couldn’t sleep, after trying for several hours.
So she sent a message to see if Navi was still awake. She needed something happy.
Navi saw the text on her phone and rolled over to answer, grinning. She loved Kitty like a sister, and she couldn’t wait for her friend to hold her and Pete’s baby. Her toes curled as she answered back.
Kitty: Want to sneak out and get some tea? I can’t sleep.
Kitty stretched her neck, quietly dressing as she waited for Navi’s response. She’d go anyway, but she’d rather have company. Xi’an was asleep and she didn’t want to leave the kids alone anyway. God only knew where Clarice was.
Navi: Of course! Let me know where and I’ll meet you there!
Navi smiled at the rhyme she’d accidentally made before kissing Pete on the forehead and leaving him a note that she was going out for a cuppa with Kitty. He was snoring, and even if she’d woken him he wouldn’t have been coherent for a while anyway.
Silently she got dressed, slipping to the garage and starting her beloved old pickup.
Txting the address, Kitty phased through the front door. Since her motorbike was dead silent, it was easy to sneak away at night. Usually to beat up muggers, but she’d had enough fighting to last her awhile. She rode in silence, letting the cold air flow over her. She reached the shop first, and parked, pulling off her helmet. She inspected her face in the window and grimaced. “That’s gonna be a nasty bruise.”
Navi showed up a while afterward, the least stealthy thing in the whole world in an ‘82 Ford pickup that probably should’ve been scrapped - and would’ve been by anyone but Navi who insisted that the truck be kept in as good of care as possible. She parked the baby blue monstrosity and moved to go inside, finding her friend quickly.
Then she gasped. “Oh my gosh, what happened?” She knew it wasn’t anyone bad - Kitty lived with good people.
“Took something to the face in the middle of the..thing..that Pete went to,” Kitty replied, unsure how much the woman had been told or if she’d even been there with Pete. It was better to wait and let Wisdom break any news.
“That was you?” Navi’s eyes were wide. She’d been there, in Pete’s hair, clinging and shouting instructions at him, weaknesses in the armor of the baddies. Duck left, no right HEY PETE THERE - she was sure his ears were ringing. “Oh, Kitty.” Navi hugged her. She suddenly felt really guilty for having so much fun.
Kitty laughed. “It’s okay. I was the one that reprogrammed that thing. I made it feel guilty, so it flew into the sun.” It had worked in her dreams, so it had worked here. “I enjoy a good fight, I just have to be more careful. Wasn’t sure if you were there or not.”
Navi nodded. “Have I … shown you I sort of … dunno. Became what I dream of?” She didn’t know if Kitty had seen her as a fairy yet.
"I can't say that you have," Kitty replied. She put an arm around Navi and led her inside the shop. "Lockheed is nearby, but he's waiting until we're done before dive bombing you, I think."
“I’ll wait then, I want to show him too.” Navi grinned, wrapping her arm around Kitty’s waist. They were the sort of friends that were cuddly, and she liked it.
Kitty plopped them into a seat next to each other, and rested her head on Navi's shoulder. She felt that exhaustion return, and so was more than happy for the snuggles. "I look forward to it."
“You look pooped. You should get something with lots of caffeine.” Navi rubbed Kitty’s temples, turning her head to wave at the barista.
“I don’t think I’m getting back to sleep, no.” Kitty closed her eyes and breathed deeply. “Every time I try I see a nightmare come back to life.”
“Was that thing from your dreams?” Navi didn’t know what she’d do if Ganon came into this world. She’d be angry, for sure.
Kitty nodded her head. "There were a whole bunch of robots, called Sentinels. They looked like 50 foot humanoids, basically. Their only purpose is to hunt and kill people like me and Wisdom. We destroyed most of them. There was another group who made variations on those. Great big monster ones. They wiped out an entire country of mutants. Sixteen million people died in one day. That...thing.." and she spat that word out. "Was one of those."
“What do you mean people like you and Pete? Oh, you mean people who can … “ She realized that Kitty meant people with special abilities. “But that’s silly, why discriminate. I mean, it’s stupid - why not have it target people who are good at math?” She rolled her eyes. “It seems just doofy.” She sighed and pulled Kitty closer. “Thank you. For helping us.”
"It's prejudice and fear. Especially in this country. A lot of it parallels the civil rights movement, and gay rights, and women's rights. Being a minority in general can lead to a lot of pain." Kitty smiled ruefully. "And I'm a woman jew mutant. It was the ultimate trifecta of evil for some people. I'm glad to have helped. I knew exactly how to handle that thing..."
“Did you like your present? I thought you’d like a silly Hanukkah present.” Navi shook her head and kissed Kitty on the forehead. “You’re amazing. That’s the bottom line, and that’s all there is to that.”
"I loved it, thank you." She kissed Navi on the cheek. They were garnering a few stares, but she didn't really care. Giant robots tended to make you realize that people staring just didn't matter. "If you really think that I'm that amazing, you'll pay for coffee," She joked.
“Of course I will!” Navi hopped up and tugged Kitty into the line with her. “What do you want to get?” Navi was going to get some green tea - no caffeine for her.
“I wasn’t serious! I think I just want some tea. I’m not too picky what tea.” She stretched, and then lifted a hand to her shoulder and rubbed it. It was sore, and she groaned. “God. Remind me to stay home next time.” Kitty didn’t sound at all serious.
“Want me to rub it for you later?” Navi sounded cheerful, all too willing to help. “I don’t mind!”
"God yes!"
That just made Navi laugh and she ordered a caffeine free matcha before bouncing back to their table. “Mmm green tea foamy.”
"So baby? Are you really going to have one? I'm trying to wrap my mind around that." Kitty shifted into a cross legged position.
Navi nodded. “I’ve been morning sick like woah and I did three pee tests. I have a doctor’s appointment on Monday, but I’m already sure. Baby.” She grinned, looking down at her tea. “We’re really excited.”
"Forgive me, but this is Pete Wisdom we're talking about. A baby....You really..really must have done a number on him." Kitty held up a hand. "That's a good thing, a really really good thing. The man's soft squishy center needed to come out more anyway. I'm glad someone did! He deserves serious happiness."
“That’s what I tell him, he’s just a delicious chocolate candy surrounded by a hard shell.” She laughed, sipping her tea and giggling when she came away with a foamy green tea moustache.
Navi nodded emphatically. “Of course. I can’t think of anyone else I’d want to take care of the little ones if something happens to Pete and me. Obviously I hope nothing does, but still. You’re going to be the best godmother ever.” The fairy’s smile was broad and genuine, and she hugged her friend tightly.
“Oh right, he wants a soccer team.” Kitty rolled her eyes good naturedly. "After the twins I'm certain one will be enough! But I'll love them. All the same."
“You’ll be the best aunt ever. You can give them all the sugary stuff I won’t.” Navi grinned, pretending to look upset for a moment. “Kitty, I swear, you can’t load them up on sugar then bring them back home!”
“But that’s the best part! Wait, the best part is the angry freaked out text messages from your husband. Which is REALLY surreal to say still.” She ran a hand through her hair. “...I need to figure out how many people are showing up for mine. I don’t want anything huge.”
“Pete and I just got married in Vegas in our Halloween costumes.” Navi shrugged. “Maybe make it family only and then super close friends? You could make a list. I love making lists.” That was an understatement. Navi grinned, licking foam off of her upper lip. “I’m excited for when you two have kids.” Adopted, surrogate - she just wanted to watch Kitty’s kittens.
“I want to wear a tux. Is that too gay?” Kitty flushed a bit as she thought of it. “But I want to wear a dress sometime too so I dunno. I think Xi’an needs to be in a dress. She’s so elegant...” Kitty ducked her head. “If we ever do.”
“You can both be in a dress.” Navi shrugged. “But you could also get a tux tailored to show off your curves. That’d be hot too.” Navi smiled brightly. “What do you mean if you ever do?”
“Do you think you’d know a good tailor? Maybe that Lulu person. I’ll ask her. I really have this idea for a white tux...” Kitty trailed off, and sighed. “The whole..blown up womb thing. I’ve been afraid to go in and have it looked at.”
“She’s amazing, she made me this corset that sort of made my boobs look even better, and they’re my second favorite part of me.” Navi squeezed Kitty’s hand. “It’s a good idea to get it looked at, just to make sure everything’s okay. I’ll go with you if you want.”
“What’s your first favorite part of you?” Kitty wasn’t sure she wanted to ask, because she was sure Navi would ask her what her own favorite parts of herself were. “I think I’d like that. I can’t rely on Faiza for all the doctoring, either.”
“My bottom. It’s why I always liked doing lunges in gym class.” Navi giggled, wrinkling her nose. “It’s Pete’s favorite part of me too, I think, he grabs it enough. Does your lady grab yours? It’s super nice.” Navi curled her knees to her chest, resting her forehead on her knees. “I like my doctor, that’s going to deliver my baby. I’ve gone to him since I was eighteen. He kind of looks like the Kentucky Fried Chicken guy, and he’s always talking about his grandkids. Or we could find you a lady if that skeeves you.”
"...okay I'll give you that." Kitty said. Navi did have a fantastic bottom. She found herself reluctantly considering her own and blushing in the process. "Yeah, she grabs it..."
The woman made a face. "I don't need Col Sanders staring at my cootchie!"
“But he’s adorable! And he’s not staring at it in an oh baby oh baby way, he’s looking at your cervix. Totally different things. Plus, to check on the part of you that’s hurt, he’d probably do an ultrasound.” Navi put her hand over Kitty’s stomach. “Here.”
“I don’t know...” Kitty was a bit nervous about the idea. She much preferred female doctors, bad coffee and all. “I’m just more comfortable with women doctors.”
“Well, we’ll find you one.” Navi smiled and squeezed Kitty’s hand. “Get everything checked out.”
“Thanks. I have to pray it healed. It wouldn’t be fair to have a freaking dream take away a choice like that.” Kitty squinted one eye shut. “A year ago I would have said I never wanted kids. Ever.”
“People change. That’s the point of living.” Navi kissed Kitty on the forehead, sisterly and happy. “You’ll be fine no matter what happens.”
"If I had a girl, there'd be too many names to pick from." Kitty smiled softly. Rachel, Illyana...... "If it's a boy, I don't know if I'd want to call him Logan or Michael. Maybe Logan Michael. Did I ever tell you about Michael? Or Logan for that matter."
Navi shook her head. “Neither of them.” She knew the name Illyana from her friend Clarice, but she didn’t know any of the others.
"Logan was my mentor and teacher in the other world. He had metal bones and claws in his hands, smoked cigars and drank like a fish. Not that those could hurt him, he had a healing factor. And he could have rage fits and stuff, but he was deeply honorable. Bushido. He was very old, but aged slowly. He taught me how to be a ninja, and when it was right to kill and when to show mercy. He also had a helluva way with ladies. He and Wisdom got along."
“You knew a samurai?” Navi’s eyes went wide. “I want to meet him. … wait, Pete got along with someone? Are you sure he wasn’t a siren or something?”
“He was a gaijin! But a Samurai, yeah.” Kitty smiled. “He was gruff and could drink Pete under the table, of course he got along. Pete kind of got along with Kurt too, after awhile. It took awhile, but he did.”
Navi just blinked. “What universe is this where my husband likes people? Are you sure that thing didn’t hurt your head?” Navi moved to rub Kitty’s shoulder like she’d promised.
"It took a lot of work, and it wasn't so much as 'like' as 'roughly get along with'." Kitty laughed, then shivered and leaned into Navi's hands. "Soft skishy center, remember?"
“True, but still. You’ve mentioned two other people besides you. I think four’s his quota before he loses his dangerous loner badge, and he likes that badge because it gets him into lady pants.” Navi shook her head, rubbing a little lower. “Why do men think they’re so complicated?”
"Because they're so simple they need to lie to themselves," Kitty replied, before biting back another groan. "He got along with Meggan but then again everyone got along with Meggan. She was a bit like you, actually. A Fae type mutant, actually. That's kinda funny."
“He said he was married to another fairy once.” Navi had to focus not to let her wings out, which meant that she was nibbling quite a bit on her lower lip. “Maybe he’s got a weird fetish for wings. Or glitter.”
"Meggan didn't have wings. She sort of...her shape changed depending on the mood of people around her. She was beautiful and light and happy.." Kitty sighed. "I was so happy when we found her alive. The other one, Tink or something, I don't know much about, except she had a thing for gatling guns. But you know what? He has a fetish for glitter, lets leave it at that."
“I know! He keeps licking mine, says it tastes like cinnamon toast crunch. I’ll have to have you and Lockheed tell me so. Speaking of, can we go outside now? I want to surprise him.” Navi was fairly bouncing with excitement.
“Okay.” Kitty got up, grabbing Navi’s wrist and licking it. It was a long, almost sensual lick, but it was hard to lick someone’s wrist and not look sensual! “No, you taste more like apple pie.”
“There’s no glitter there.” Navi rolled her eyes and all but ran out of the shop, dragging Kitty with her to an alley. “Ugh, finally!” She could let her wings out and finally stretch them! They looked a bit like butterfly wings - diaphanous and light - and were baby blue. Whenever she fluttered them, the sound of wind chimes could be heard. And yes, the faint dust that was on them was glittery, and yes, it did taste like Cinnamon Toast Crunch. “Okay, here.” Navi turned around and flapped, glittering Kitty.
Kitty absently stroked at the edges of Navi’s wings. She’d forgotten about telling Navi about Michael, which was probably a good thing. I had a baby and they took him away and locked me in a black box but it wasn’t real made for depressing story-telling. “They’re amazing! So beautiful...”
Just then, Lockheed divebombed them.
“Aww, thanks!” Navi giggled as Kitty petted her wings; they were vaguely ticklish and she bit her lip to focus on not wiggling. But when Lockheed swooped toward her, she giggled happily, reaching out for him and hugging him tightly.
The wriggling would have been almost as cute as the way she hugged Lockheed. The little dragon squawked and headbutted Navi in the shoulder, before settling down like he belonged there. "Well, he's happy to see you."
“Oh, I told Pete I love Lockheed. He was a little grumpy about it.” Navi laughed as she gently massaged the dragon’s wings. “I can go tiny, too. I was scared about it, but then he showed me it was okay. I have to thank him.”
“Really? Can you fly like that?” Kitty watched Lockheed writhe and stretch and coo in Navi’s arms, and laughed.
“I can, yeah.” Navi focused, and soon she was hovering a bit above the ground. But then she smiled at Lockheed. “I’m going to go little, ‘kay?” And then Navi was a tiny ball of blue light, sounding like wind chimes, glittering and glowing.
Kitty gasped, and Lockheed made an alarmed sound, before flying in circles around the blue light!
“See? I’m fine!” Navi giggled at Lockheed before settling on his nose, kissing it and moving to fly closer to Kitty.
Lockheed gave chase, mostly to play, as he hadn’t had someone to fly around with in AGES. At this rate, he might just move in with Navi, smoke-man be damned! He alighted on Kitty’s shoulder and blew playful smoke at Navi.
Navi giggled, growing large again and glittering Lockheed, laughing happily. She blushed a little, feeling silly and vulnerable, but knowing that Kitty wouldn’t judge her.
"That's beautiful!" She wrapped her arms around Navi and hugged her!
“You think so? Thanks!” Navi blushed, burrowing into her friend’s hug, bouncing a little as she did so. “I wonder if the baby will be part fairy.”
“Mutant blood and fae blood? It’s bound to be special, I can tell you that. I wonder if this counts as uniting the species!”
“Was I supposed to?” Navi blinked.
“Nope, just makes it that much more awesome.” Kitty ruffled Navi’s hair, then stroked a wing again, wanting to see glitter get everywhere. She was like Tinkerbell only more awesome.
“See if it tastes like cinnamon toast like Pete says!” Navi grinned, leaning against Kitty. “I can hold them in if I have to, but it hurts after too long. Like I need to pee or something.”
“It’s probably like binding your breasts,” Kitty said, licking along one wing tip and making a happy little sound. “That’s good!”
That made Navi shudder and bite her lip. “Okay, maybe not licking the wings specifically.” She was going to have to get Pete to try that.
“Why not? I’ll bet it’s like earlobes.” Kitty playfully trailed a finger along Navi’s ear. “Or tails. I kind of always wondered if you could have that effect on Kurt’s tail...”
“Oh! The guy from Germany on the boards?” Navi blinked, nuzzling into Lockheed who was playfully batting at her wings. “You know him?”
"You could say that." Kitty grinned, impishly. "He just doesn't remember me yet!" She was looking forward to that, and hoped he was her Kurt.
Navi blinked. “You used to unf him? He’s cute! Well. In his icons, at least.” Navi giggled, bouncing a little in excitement for Kitty.
“Oh god! Oh god no! I never unf’d him!” Kitty flushed, then glanced around. “I wanted to. But I was his little Katzchen. And his name didn’t begin with a P or D.” Kitty laughed. “He was hot. Scary the first time I saw him. Had very short, soft blue fur, pointed ears and yellow eyes, and an prehensile devil tail. Nicest, sweetest blue devil you could ever meet.”
“You only like - but doesn’t your fiancee’s name start with an X?” Navi kind of wondered what it would be like to snog someone with fur, but figured she’d never know. She was married.
It was soft, soft to the touch....
"Yes, exception that breaks the rule." Kitty giggled. "Piotr and Pete were the only ones that I dated, but I had a crush on Doug.. Bobby pursued me but I think I was out of my mind with him. I had a crush on Illyana and Rachel but I never did anything about that. And Xi'an of course."
Navi smiled. “I’m glad that you’re with someone you really care about, though. Everyone needs someone. So you two are buddies?”
“We are. Well, over there. I hope we can be here too.” It was too depressing a thought if they couldn’t be friends.
“I’m sure you will be here too. I don’t get how anyone couldn’t be friends with you. You’re kind of awesome.” Navi was still fluttering, happily.
“Only kind of,” she teased, wrapping an arm around Navi’s shoulder, but careful of the wings. “Lets get ice cream, there has to be a place open at this hour...”
Navi nodded, wrinkling her brow so that she could focus on getting her wings back in. That done, she wrapped her arm around Kitty’s shoulders and smiled.
