Cadence was at the hospital, volunteering. She was down a different corridor, one she wasn’t used to. There was someone down this way she was supposed to be visiting, but she was afraid she’d taken a wrong turn. She was carrying a chess set, and had a bewildered expression on her features. It was nearly lunchtime, and she wasn’t sure what she was going to do if she couldn’t find the man she was supposed to be visiting. Should she go back to the volunteer coordinator and tell him she’d failed at her task? Or did she continue her search? Perhaps she should find some lunch somewhere and try again afterward?
Thor stepped out of the room he was staying in and then smiled as he saw her. “Cadence?” he broke into a wider smile. “What are you doing here and why are you wearing that very sexy outfit, Cadence?” He purred her name.
Cadence turned at the sound of her name. She broke into a smile at the sight of Thor and gave a little shrug. “Sexy outfit? It’s just...” She had on the bib that the volunteers normally wore over her regular clothes. Sexy? She wasn’t sure what he meant by that. “I’m supposed to be meeting someone for a game of chess, but I think I’m in the wrong hall.”
Thor smirked at her. “Nope. You’re supposed to meet me.” He nodded and beckoned her. “MY room is down here.” he liked seeing her. She was beautiful, and nice, and while he had never had sex with her, he had thought about it.
“You?” Cadence blushed a bit. “Oh. Well, I hope you’re ready for a game of chess.” She said, giving him a smile. Cadence knew about Thor’s career in television and film, she’d never seen any of his work, though. She thought he was smoking hot. “How are you feeling today?” She added, walking along with him to his room.
“I’m feeling a lot better. Some parts are still tender, and need caring for, but the rest of me is quite well.” Thor smirked a little, and he led the way into his room, and pulled the chair and floating table to his bed so he could ease back into it. “What all are you doing for your volunteer time?” Thor had naughty dreams of seducing candy stripers but he didn’t want to make a bad impression with Cadence.
“Mostly just conversations, some games. I’ve got chess and a deck of cards. Normally I don’t spend time with someone so...” Young? Handsome? Whatever it was that Thor was. Most of the people she came to visit at the hospital were older and had few (if any) visitors of their own. Though, she always came to see fellow parishioners when they were here. “I do whatever I’m asked to do. Within reason,” she added.
Thor smirked a little. “Within reason? Define reason.” He helped set up the game, curious now about he, and her ways and reasons. She seemed interesting.
“Nothing immoral or illegal.” Cadence responded, giving him a little smirk.
“Based on whose morality?” He chose black and nodded, pondering the board. “And whose laws?” It was a bit of a challenge and he felt this could only go interesting places.
“Mine.” Cadence’s smirk widened a little, and her eyebrow raised, as if she was challenging him to argue with that.
Thor’s smirk widened as he took his first move, and one foot stroked the bottom of her leg. “And might one know some parameters of those morality and laws?” He smirked at her, eyes dancing. This was fun!
Cadence jumped a little when she felt his foot brush against her leg under the table. She scooted back a little bit, then took her own move. “All one would have to do to know is ask.” She said, giving him a little smirk.
“Then consider yourself asked. What are the parameters of your morality and laws?” he canted his head at her, curious. “Where does sex fall in them?”
“Ah, sex is a no go for me.” Cadence said, lifting her hand to tap the gold, cross necklace that hung around her neck. “I made a promise to wait.”
“Why?” He blinked. “A promise to whom?” he had an idea what she was talking about, but he wanted to know in her words, her meaning, her eyes. “And why?”
"I've promised to save my virginity for my husband. I only have it as a gift to give once, and it's something I treasure." She explained, gently. "It's your move. " she motioned to the chess set.
Thor moved his piece and nodded. “And does virginity mean every kind of sex? And touching? And making out?” And lap dances?” He was curious at her limits now trhat the door was open, so to speak.
“My last boyfriend and I kept our pants on.” She said, simply. He was curious, and she wasn’t ashamed. She hadn’t done anything wrong. “We kissed and cuddled. That was as far as we wanted to go.” He’d been as much a part of that decision as she had. Or so she thought.
Thor nodded. “Thank you.” he moved again and watched her. “You’re a very confident, very strong young woman. And I think that is good to be.”
Cadence thought for a moment, looking at the board, then moved her piece. “Thank you. My faith makes me strong.”
His next move was a quick one and he nodded. “As long as it is a questioning and open minded faith, I would say so.” he nodded.
“I didn’t say blind faith.” Cadence said, giving him a little smile. “I was raised to ask questions, to find things I believe in and learn about them. I was raised to love who I am, to love my soul, my body, and my heart, and to care for them closely. I would never judge anyone else of their decisions, just as I hope they won’t judge me for mine.”
“Which is why I was not frowning at you. And good. You sound like a smart and strong young woman. I hope you find you always keep that.” He smiled to her, eyes dancing with warmth. He paused, then,. one move made, hmmed. “And remember, your beliefs have room in them for other ones, even if they seem to defy them. There is more to the universe, as some people have said, than is dreamt of by you, yet.” He nodded, warmth and respect in his eyes as he fixed hers with them.
“I can’t imagine something taking that away from me.” She said, watching him make a move. “Indeed.” She said, eyes on the board, and took her next move. She’d heard everything. Every story, every guy she’d ever gone out with had tried to convince her that sex wouldn’t contradict her beliefs, or that she was wrong, or that her decision wasn’t the right one. But no one had changed her mind so far, and she really didn’t think Thor would be able to.
Thor nodded as he listened to her and then moved a piece, smiling. “Good. Here is my next question. Where do other gods fit into your belief? Defend your answer.”
“Other Gods?” Cadence asked, leaning back in her chair a little. “There’s so much to this world that I don’t know and will never know. It’s entirely possible that there are other systems out there in existence. The Bible is a wonderful story book, but it’s full of holes, unanswered questions, contradictions and guesswork. It’s not the work as it was originally written, and most of it was written after the fact. But it’s not the exact diction that makes it powerful. It’s the message behind it. Love your neighbor as yourself.” She said. “That’s the best lesson in there.” She paused. “I don’t see why other Gods couldn’t exist. There’s no proof. Or, perhaps, that what I refer to as ‘God’ is actually several more Gods than I realize. I already believe in a God split into three parts. Perhaps there’s more.”
“Good thoughts.” He was very glad to see her mind so open. “We should talk of that again, someday.” He shifted a piece and then nodded. “Check.”
Cadence was really good at losing at chess and making it seem as if she put up a struggle. She darted her king out of the way, but saw several other ways that her king could be taken. “Perhaps someday we will.” She gave him a smile.
Thor nodded. “We will. But it will have to be at my house after this time.” he nodded and then shifted his bishop, and nodded as it finished it’s move. “Check and mate. This time.” He grinned at her.
Cadence gave him a smile. "Checkmate. I should have seen it coming." Of course she did.
Thor grinned. “And you did, of course. You’re rather good.” He grinned back at her, eyes dancing.
“We’ll definitely have to plan a rematch sometime.” She said, giving him a grin. She reached forward and cleaned up the pieces, folding them into the board. “You seem cheered up. I should probably head back to my coordinator to let him know my job is done here.”
Thor nodded, rising. “Thank you, Cadence. And remember, you are not alone.” He smiled, and bowed to her, before turning and heading out himself. He had much to think on and a renewed hope. Maybe, just maybe, everything would be alright.
Cadence gave him a nod and a smile, then headed off down the hall. There was a little spring in her step. She loved this volunteer work.
