Who: Alex Summers and Verity When: Sunday, December 30 Where: Outside Oliver’s Hospital Room What: Chit Chatting Rating: Low Status: Complete!
Alex was off work on Sunday, and feeling tired, but wondering about the guy he had assisted on Christmas. So, to the hospital, an often visited place, he went. Checking in with the nurses, he found the man was doing better and was sent him toward Oliver’s room, but he soon found out that Oliver was out in tests. He sighed, annoyed, but at least the man was doing better.
He nearly slammed into someone as he turned from the room, and caught the form, which he realized was blonde and feminine, as he rocked back. “Whoah! Sorry! Wasn’t paying attention.” He paused, then smiled. “Are you okay?”
Whoops! Verity nearly bowled into someone. She was carrying two cups, one in each hand, and thankfully neither spilled as the gentleman caught her shoulders. She brought her eyes up from the floor to look into his face. For a moment she was struck dumb. He was incredibly handsome.
"No, no, I wasn't paying attention," she said, apologetically. "I'm sorry. I'm all right, are YOU okay? "
“I’m just fine.” He smirked at her and looked her up and down quickly. “You look unharmed, good.” He nodded to her. “I was just visiting to see if someone I treated was okay. turns out he is better, but that he’s out for tests so I can’t say hi.” He babbled the words out to her, then stopped himself. Damn, she was hot.
“Ah, I’m Alex.”
“Hi.” Verity said, giving him a smile. “I’m Verity. I’m here visiting, too, but he’s in tests right now.” What a coincidence. It never even occurred to her that they might be here to see the same person. “I was just desperate for a coffee. Thought I’d get him one, too, see if his doc says it’s okay for him to drink it.”
Alex hmmed, then glanced behind him, and at her. And took a chance. “Oliver Wood? Right? He’s out to tests and... want to sit and wait together?” He had nothing better to do and talking with a hot woman seemed a nice way to wait. Even if she was taken.
"Yes," Verity said, blushing just a little. "Oh, sure," She nodded, smiling, and moved to sit on the bench along the Hall wall. "You treated him?" She asked. Of course, she didn't assume she'd meet all of his doctors.
“I was the responding firefighter in the trauma unit. We arrived first, since we were closest, and such crashes sometimes need the jaws. This time, I treated Oliver, and had to give CPR when he failed there on the road. “ He quieted for a moment. “I got him back, but it was a near thing, and didn’t have a chance to stop until the paramedics were there.”
"Wow." Verity said in a somber tone. "I owe you Thanks. You saved Oliver's life. " she wasn't sure what she would have done had he died.
Alex shook his head. “No you don’t.” He waved a hand. “This is my job.” He blushed and smiled. ”But you’re welcome.” He reached out to squeeze a hand. “How are you doing?”
“Better now he’s awake and we’ve had a chance to talk,” Verity said, giving him a smile at the touch to her hand. He had strong, fireman’s hands. Why’d he have to be a fireman, too? Hot. “I... he and I had a bit of a disagreement before the accident, and I was rather terrified that he... that it was my fault.”
Alex nodded, listening, and he smiled. He listened and he nodded gently. “I hear that a lot. And I can tell you, no matter what, it’s not.” He smiled at her. “You are amazing and you are a good person and no matter what else happened, you are not responsible.” He grinned. She was kind of hot, and he felt rather like he was doing his best not to say anything about that.
Verity nodded, smiling shyly. She tried to be a good person. wanted to be the best person that she could be for Oliver. It was strange how they’d only known each other a short time, and yet it felt like they’d had a lifetime of love together. She wondered if he ever felt the same way. Something like deja vu. “Thank you.” She said, softly. “I think things are better now, even though I was in a bad place for what felt like a really long time.”
Alex smiled. “I hope things continue to get better. This time of year seems to be hard on everyone, here and overseas both. Every culture, every place, every people.” He poked her lightly. “I dunno about you, but I mostly try to think of good things and do something fun.”
“That’s next on the agenda, for sure.” Verity responded, giving him a grin. “I missed Christmas Day with my family because I was here with Oliver, so I’ll have to reschedule with them now he’s a bit better.”
Alex nodded. “More people should have Christmas after Christmas. Makes for fun times. And hopefully, it will be a nice and gentle one.” He nodded. He wanted her to have a good time. She seemed nice, and she had missed a lot with her friend.
“Well, the Christmas season goes until early January, doesn’t it? The twelve days of Christmas and all that?” She asked, then gave a gentle shrug. “I’m sure we’ll have fun. The kids had a great Christmas--that is, my niece and nephew--and as much as I missed them, I knew I had to be here.”
“True.” Alex nodded, waggling a finger at her. “So, well within the season.” He smiled at her. “Good. It’s good to know where you belong. Few people seem to, these days.” He shook his head, then grinned. “I should probably get going. But hey, if you ever are hanging around and want to have a random run in with a strange Firefighter, let me know.” He offered her his hand.
Verity took his hand and shook it gently. “Thank you.” She paused, still holding his hand in hers. She gave it a squeeze, her expression and tone going very serious. “Thank you. Oliver owes you his life, really, and I don’t know what I’d do--” Her voice cut out.
“Well, thank you.” She stood with him, releasing his hand. “For everything.”
He smiled a little. “You’re welcome. Give me a ring sometime.” He handed her his card, and then he smiled softly. “Let me know how the big lug is doing.” And then he was walking away, smiling.
