Snow. It was the last thing Wrex had expected to see when he got up that morning. Snow by the bucketful. He’d spent a few minutes watching, before he went into response mode to make sure all the kids were okay. Which only took a few phone calls, as the trek from the cabin to the ranch house would be more difficult than usual.
Kasumi was glad she'd brought the sexy Mrs. Claus outfit for last night. The long-sleeved, short-skirted velvet number was the warmest top she had at the Ranch, and she'd pulled it back on over her jeans.
By the time Wrex was finished with his phone calls, Kasumi was making coffee and pouring herself a glass of orange juice.
"It's still snowing, and they don't know when it'll end," Wrex said, walking over and putting his arms around Kasumi from behind. Because she was warm, and snuggly. "Never seen snow like this up here. Apparently the entire county is getting blanketed in it."
He grunted. Freak snow in Orange County. What was next?
"Well, it's better than meteors," she remarked, resting her cheek on his shoulder as they cuddled. "So, I guess I'm not going home any time soon." That was fine with her. There was nothing that needed to be done today, and she certainly didn't want to go out in that snow.
"It's pretty." She reached up to kiss his cheek before disentangling herself to pour them both a cup of coffee.
“Yeah,” Wrex said, glancing back at her as she moved to pour the coffee. She moved with so much grace and feline fluidity that he felt both his heart and other things twinge. He’d been so relieved and happy that they’d managed to fix what they’d nearly ruined that he had been ignoring a lot of things that he was feeling.
"Guess I'm stuck here for a while," she said, grinning. She could live with that. She handed him one cup of coffee and kept the other for herself, taking a sip. Kasumi leaned against Wrex, her ankle wrapping around his leg as she stroked his calf with her toes.
"What do you need to do today?" she asked. Obviously there wouldn't be much construction today, but she didn't know what parts of the ranch could run without Wrex--or were running at all, today.
Kasumi was making it difficult for him to concentrate on either coffee or the snow. Wrex leaned back against her just enough for there to be pressure, but not enough to topple either of them over. Sometimes, he felt like he would somehow hurt her on accident. Not that she was precious or fragile, but he still worried. And in some ways, she was indeed precious to him.
He turned to slip an arm around Kasumi. “Today I’d planned to take some of the kids horse riding, but that’s not going to happen now. We’ll need to call up a plow, or rig something up to my truck when it stops snowing.” He smiled ruefully. “I’m not in the mood to rush that yet.”
"No rush, then," Kasumi agreed, cuddling up as close as she could while still keeping a hand free for coffee. Truly, as much as she enjoyed the 'rough stuff' in the bedroom, part of her liked the more delicate treatment she received in the mornings. It didn't quite gel with the image of a strong, independent woman that Kasumi had become, but Wrex got to see parts of her no one else did.
The strong, independent woman was a large part of the attraction for Wrex, but then, you didn't expect a big bear of a man to be into cuddles and gentleness. They could keep each other's secret, right?
"How did you sleep?" Wrex rumbled, softly.
"Very well." She put her mug down to stretch her arms over her head in a long, graceful arch. "I always sleep well after you wear me out." Kasumi did her fair share of wearing Wrex out, too. Her expectations were pretty high, and Wrex did not disappoint.
"How about you?"
"I slept like the dead," he replied, threading some fingers through Kasumi's hair and then kissing the side of her neck. He worked very hard to ensure her expectations were met. It was exhausting, wonderful work. Wrex chuckled. "You're going to kill me some day."
"Not allowed," she told him. She felt a tightness around her heart, but mitigated the seriousness by kissing his nose. She'd already lost one boyfriend; Wrex was not allowed to die on her.
She lifted her hand to run over his fingers and kissed him again.
Wrex had no intention of dying on her. The thought left a cold stone in the pit of his stomach. She'd already lost someone and he didn't want to cause her that kind of pain again, and especially not be the one that caused it.
He'd have to think about what that meant, or what the feeling in his chest meant. It felt a bit like a sucking chest wound, only good, and grew stronger the more he kissed her.
"Well, let's not waste the whole morning," she said, once he broke the kiss. She finished the last of her coffee and then took his hand, leading him back to the bedroom. She had a bit of a surprise in store--a surprise for both of them, as it turned out! A simple flirtatious striptease became an elaborate, erotic dance. That set the stage for being worn out, once again.
Once he thought he could stand, and once he thought he could stand to be parted from Kasumi for long enough, Wrex padded out into the kitchen to get some water, and something to snack on. He could get used to this.
To himself, outloud in the kitchen, he even said it. “I could get used to this.”
Kasumi wasn't so quick to leave the bed. She burrowed down into the blankets, quite warm and comfortable here. Really, this was where the best entertainment in the little cabin was to be found.
"Can you bring me some water?" she called.
Wrex found some crackers and cheese, and brought them back along with two large glasses of water. He set them on a tray on the bed, then crawled back into the warm, woman-filled bed, pulling the sheets back up. He glanced at her, studying the way she lay, admiring the curve of her jaw, and her lips.
“Cupcakes were the best,” he muttered. His turtle heart thudded in his chest. He’d kill for this woman.
Kasumi instinctively moved closer to the Wrex-shaped heat source that had joined her in bed. "Cupcakes are always the best," she purred, sitting up and stretching for a glass of water. After taking a sip, she reached for the can of spray cheese he'd brought with the crackers. "This is completely ridiculous," she told him, but she was grinning. Clearly he was a bachelor. Still, it was more fun than any of the more respectable cheeses.
Which she demonstrated by spraying a dollop of cheese on Wrex's nose.
He had developed a Kasumi-favoring sweet tooth, watching the way her muscles moved beneath her skin. "There's nothing wrong with spray cheese." Wrex made sure his voice was gruff, and he was good at feigning offense. "It's quick, it's delicious, and...."
And now he had cheese on his nose. Clearly this meant war. Wrex tried to grab the can from her.
"Oh no!" she called, trying to jump out of the way and nearly knocking over the water. A precarious perch, it seemed. In trying to avoid drenching the bed, though, she lost her hold on the can of spray cheese.
So in an effort to defuse wartime tension and appease her enemy, she dove in and licked the cheese product off Wrex's nose.
Wrex started laughing, but he wasn't entirely defused just yet. Because he traced a line of cheese from Kasumi's navel to her throat, and grinned triumphantly. It might very well be a pyrrhic victory, but that was a sacrifice he was willing to make. He adored this woman, and had to bite back something entirely too sappy for any respectable Kroger.
Kasumi gave a yelp unlike any of the noises Wrex had heard her make. That was a long trail of fake cheese. "I hope you plan on cleaning that up, mister." It would be awfully messy if she decided to roll over onto his nice sheets.
Wrex grabbed Kasumi's waist, so he could push her back and get to cleaning the mess up. And he still had the cheese can, having discovered something much more edible than crackers.
