John smiled as he drove, AJ in the passenger seat. He had discovered the bar on one of his wanderings with his fellow cops, and he felt like it was really good. He had liked the pinball machine the best and had told AJ about it. Tonight, they were celebrating his new job. They had done some private celebrating already, but this was their day out, and with his new job already showing as fun, he couldn’t wait to sit down and talk with her.
As he parked outside the bar, he smiled at AJ. “Alright, gorgeous. Ready to go in?”
AJ was pretty excited about the pinball machine. She was really excited to celebrate with John, too, really excited about his new job and what that ask meant for him. She gave him a grin and nodded. "Absolutely. I've been looking forward to this."
John leaned in and kissed her, then grinned. “I love you.” He slipped out, and opened her door, a habit he had gotten into, just because. “Then come on. The owner is a nice person, most of the time.” He grinned again as he led the way into the bar, and waved toward the owner.
“Hello, Neena. This is AJ. AJ, this is Neena.”
Neena smiled at the pair as they came in. John wasn’t a regular, but she recognized him well enough. “Hey, look at you, bringing a girl here. Hi!” She drew a beer for another patron, and slid over to the side of the bar closest to the two. “What’ll it be, lovebirds?” Neena was mostly teasing. She didn’t know if they were dating, but it seemed like a good guess.
AJ grinned, blushing just a little at being called 'a girl.' She liked being John's girl. "Hi, Neena," she responded softly. "I'll have a rum and coke? "
“She’s definitely my girl, my girlfriend, these days.” He smiled softly at AJ, then nodded to Neena. He liked the odd woman. “I’ll have a martini, straight. How’s business?”
Neena grinned, and started on the rum and coke. “You’re cute.” She directed the comment at John, winking at AJ. “There are two other customers, and you’re asking about business.” She snorted, setting AJ’s drink in front of her. “But it is Christmas Eve. Normally things are going well, like normal.” She started the work for the martini. “Two olives, right? You don’t come in often enough.”
AJ accepted the drink with a gentle “thanks” and lifted it for a sip. She had to agree, he was cute. “It’s a bit of a slow night, is it? Christmas Eve?” She wondered how the holiday affected the number of customers in the bar.
John chuckled. “Well, I was working with guns, before. I tended to try not to drink a lot. Never have been one to do so.” He smiled over at AJ. “Might come in more often now with AJ.”
“I like that it’s slow, honestly. People should be with their families.” Neena went down the bar and took an order from one of the other patrons, before sliding back over. “So one olive or two?” She would let them decide how often they came in. She liked seeing happy couples, but she didn’t get invested in her patron’s personal lives.
“It’s that time of year,” AJ said, turning to look around the bar at the other patrons. She wondered if they really had nowhere to go, or if they were avoiding family around the holiday. Sometimes her family was a little overwhelming, so she could understand wanting to sneak out for a bit and have some alone time.
John nodded. “Two.” He grinned at AJ. She was a nice lady and he loved being around her, all the time. He slid an arm around her as he looked at Neena. “I imagine New years will be a lot more interesting.”
Neena nodded. “Yeah, but I’m looking forward to it. I don’t have any plans, anyway.” She popped a pair of olives into the martini and slid it over. “Let me know if you two need anything.”
AJ gave Neena a bright smile. “Thank you,” she said, kindly, then took another gulp from her drink. This place was nice, and the owner was nice. AJ could see herself coming here more often. She’d have to tell Big Mac about this place, too. She leaned against the bar a little and turned her smile to John. “So... new job! Tell me more about it.”
John smiled at Aj, and listened. “Well, I’ll be investigating things, going out and doing footwork and using my experience to figure out the frauds from the real people needing help. Hopefully, really making a difference..”
AJ was so very proud of him. She reached over and squeezed his arm, then leaned in and stole a kiss to his jaw. “You’re going to be fantastic. You already are, but you’re going to be amazing at this job. I just know it.”
John smiled at her and kissed her full on the lips, letting one hand slide down to grope her ass. “I hope so, Thank you. I just want to help people and while I was never worried... I’ve seen a lot of police officer’s widows. I don’t ever want you to go through that.”
AJ blushed deeply. She didn’t want to go through that, either. She’d have to be married to him to be a widow, though, and the idea that he was thinking about having her as his wife? That was a bit... touching. Scary and exciting at the same time. She wrapped both arms around his chest and hugged him tightly, turning her face to the side so she could nuzzle in between his collarbones.
John kissed her again, and stroked her face softly. He snuggled her when she slid her arms around him, and he shuddered. “NNNgh You keep holding me like that and we’ll need to go home very quickly dear...”
AJ chuckled and pulled back a little. "But I haven't finished my drink yet."
“Then we should definitely slow down, just a little, sexy one.” He kissed her again. “You are so beautiful.”
AJ grinned softly. "All right." She returned his kiss then pulled out of his arms, blushing. "This beautiful girl wants to try out the pinball machine. "
John nodded and rose. “Then let’s go, beautiful. And have a little fun.” After all, that was what tonight was for.
“Only a little?” AJ responded playfully. She pulled some money from her pocket and left it under the glass on the bar for Neena, then turned to let John lead the way toward the pinball machine. “C’mon, sexy, let’s see if you’re a wizard.”
