Lulu’s fingers were not their usual perfect selves. Even as a seamstress, Lulu took good care of her hands, always keeping the nails trimmed and even and perfectly polished. Every now and again there would be cuts, but those she knew she couldn’t avoid. Ever since Nikola and his indiscretion (because she couldn’t bring herself to think of it as a betrayal), she’d been sewing and drawing, drawing and sewing, and her beautiful nails were ragged and bloody as a result.
She kept waiting for him to show up at her door. Every minute he didn’t, she wasn’t sure if she was grateful or despondent. It would be easier to simply write him off and move on, but she’d trusted him. She’d let him see her with her guard down. It was enough to drive her mad, which was why she was seated in front of her sewing machine, cigarette dangling from her mouth, fighting with a particularly tricky bobbin to get it to sit right in the machine.
Nikola arrived. Finally. He’d mended his wounded pride, hidden away for a day or so to deal with the crazy thoughts still trapped in his own mind, then finally came out to see the world again. Everything had continued, so he figured this wasn’t the apocalypse. His first stop was the florist. He picked up a dozen calla lilies and then headed straight to Lulu’s place and knocked on the door.
He had grovelling to do. It left a sour taste in his mouth.
The knock made her heart leap into her throat, and she had to work to swallow it down. She stubbed out her cigarette in an ash tray, turned off the sewing machine and thought to herself. She probably looked like hell: she was wearing a hockey jersey of her ex-fiancé’s that she only wore when she was truly upset. It fell to her thighs and she hadn’t bothered wearing anything else. She was alone with Pepsi, who cared? Her hair was in a long braid, and she toyed with the ends when she went to the door.
Opening it up, she didn’t look up to meet Nikola’s eyes.
He held the flowers out and down a little, getting them into her view. She wouldn’t look at him, but she couldn’t miss the flowers. Perhaps that would serve as some sort of ice breaker? He didn’t say anything yet, just caught her attention with the flowers.
She simply turned around, moving to grab another cigarette out of the box she kept by the living room chair. But she didn’t slam the door in his face or yell at him yet. He could follow her if he liked. She lit the cigarette with a tiny magic spell, aiming it with her fingertip as she looked up at him. “Those are my favorites. Lucky guess?”
“Perhaps.” Nikola followed her into her place and pushed the door closed behind him. He set the flowers down on the nearest empty surface. “Lu, I’m so sorry.” He said with a sigh. His shoulders seemed to sink and collapse, his whole demeanor deflating.
“You should be.” She exhaled smoke up to the ceiling, her free hand idly practicing her flame smell - hand encased in fire one moment, then the next not. It was oddly calming. “What happened?” It was a request, but also a demand; she had to know before she’d even consider things being okay.
“I...” Nikola frowned a bit. Normally, words didn’t fail him. But in that moment what he was about to say sounded so incredibly ridiculous in his head that he almost didn’t dare say it aloud. Then again, she just lit a cigarette with her fingertip, and he was a vampire in another life. Could they get any more ridiculous?
“I made a wish on a shooting star, and it came true. And this was a wish that never should have come true.”
She just nodded. Normally she’d have scoffed at that, but people had said that their wishes were coming true. And he probably hadn’t thought it could come true anyway. “She’s engaged, you know. And I even told her I understood you’d always love her more than me, even if you did come to love me.” It was her cross, and she’d bear it.
Nikola wished he could argue that. But he didn’t think he could. He wanted to be completely honest with Lulu, wanted to open up his heart to her, as she deserved at least that much. He simply nodded.
“I have come to love you.” He said, and that was the God’s honest truth. “Very much. I don’t know how or why tings happened the way they did this last week, but... I’m sorry that they did.” He didn’t want to lose her over a stupid fluke.
Lulu looked up at him. She didn’t think he was lying, and she studied his face for a moment. “I believe you.” And she didn’t completely begrudge him his situation. She was wearing her dead lover’s hockey jersey because it smelled of him, and that still comforted her. If he was still alive, she didn’t know what she’d do either. “If anything, it’s probably good this happened. It puts what you both want in clarity.”
She looked absolutely amazing in that jersey, by the way. He nodded, though he thought that the week probably gave Helen more clarity than it gave him. "I'm just glad that it's over," he told her honestly. "I want to get back to real life."
Patting the spot on the sofa next to her, Lulu moved over so he could sit by her. “I can’t be too angry with you. I think that’s been the frustrating part.” Strange things had cropped up all over - powers, differences in bodies, snow - how could she begrudge him a wish? Besides, Nikola was a man of logic. He wouldn’t have thought the wish could come true. “I got a lot of work done.”
Nikola moved to the sofa and sat down next to her. He reached forward and took her hand in his. “I didn’t.” He said, softly. “I was stupid and love sick all week. That should have been my first clue something was wrong.” He ran his fingertips over her knuckles. “I’m a better man when I’m with you.”
“You’re a good man no matter who you’re with, Nikola.” Lulu just wanted him to realize that she thought the world of him and wanted him to be happy. No more, no less.
Nikola turned his hand over under hers. He squeezed her hand with his own, gently. “You’re sweet. But it’s not true. You make me better.” He said, then leaned in to tap a kiss against her cheek.
She hadn’t cried the whole week and she wasn’t about to start then. When she felt tears coming, she closed her eyes and leaned back. “I honestly don’t know why I’m so upset.” He’d never committed to her. She loved him. She was monogamous to him. “I apologize. I’m glad you think I make you better. I think you’re already lovely, you know.”
“I know.” Nikola said, lifting a hand to trail his fingertips along her jaw. He took hold of it and pulled her in to kiss her lips. “Please don’t be upset. You have absolutely nothing to apologize for.”
She kissed him back, sighing and shaking her head when they finished. “I do. I told you I’d be monogamous. You didn’t agree to the same. Me holding you to that standard when you didn’t say you were going to is unreasonable.”
Nikola paused. It was true. He’d never told her that he was going to be monogamous. But that was his plan. He was ready. He’d been ready before those damn shooting stars. “Lu, I... I’m ready.” He said, very softly. “I’ve decided. It’s time.”
She’d wanted to slap him or tell him to leave, but instead she crawled into his lap and wrapped her arms around him. “If you ever, ever do that again, I will shock you. I can do that now.” She leaned back to show him, holding a tiny spark in the palm of her hand.
“Shock?” He asked, then gave a little chuckle at the sparks in her fingertips. “From the dreams?” He asked, again. “And don’t worry. I have no intention of ever doing anything like that again.”
“From the dreams.” She couldn’t help it, playfully slapping him with the spark, just the tiniest jolt and the tiniest slap, mostly teasing and barely grazing him. “Good.” She looked down at her fingers, sighing. “I need a manicure. You see what I do when I’m sulking over you? Bastard.”
Nikola gave a jump when she gave him the shock, but something about it felt... He was a little turned on, to be honest. He lifted a hands to cover her finger with his own, then wrapped his arms around her to hug her tightly against him. "I'll pay for your manicure. " She nuzzled closer into him, smiling and nibbling his neck. “You don’t have to do that.” She liked that he wasn’t scared or upset by her abilities. And the fact that he had come back to her spoke quite a bit to his character. She could tell that he wasn’t lying; he was easy enough to read. Lulu looked down at him, smiling and kissing him lightly. “I’m glad it happened, you know. If it means that you finally said that you’re seeing me and me alone.”
“You’re... glad it happened?” Nikola said, a little surprised. He kissed her again, his hands wrapped around her. He shifted her in his lap and let his hands start to wander. One over her back, and the other to her thigh. “I was planning on getting there before this week of madness,” he confessed. “I was going to tell you over Christmas.”
“Well, then, this made it happen faster.” She didn’t know if he’d really have told her on Christmas or not. She assumed that he had been intending to, but she couldn’t say so for sure. “Well, now you’ve told me. Thank you.” She smiled at him, stroking his cheek lightly. “For returning.” She understood how difficult it was to let go of a first love, if one truly could.
“I couldn’t stay away.” Nikola responded softly, his eyes finding hers. He leaned in and stole a kiss from her lips. It was tender and gentle, and his hand lifted to wrap around her cheek as he drew her in and let the kiss evolve.
Kissing Nikola had always felt like something she was born to do. He normally didn’t kiss her sweetly, he normally didn’t kiss her lovingly, and she smiled to herself as they continued.
He wanted to prove to her how much he cared, pouring his emotion into the kiss. It may have been one of the first times he was with someone he loved like this, one of the first times he had full permission to her body. It was pretty powerful.
Lulu couldn’t help but whimper, burrowing close to him and kissing him along his neck and jawline. “I’m just glad you’re here. You don’t have to leave if you don’t want to.” She was very okay if he spent the night.
“I don’t?” Nikola said, unable to stop a little smirk from crossing his features. His hand moved along her thigh, travelling up underneath her jersey and toward her hip. “You’ll let me stay here? With you? Overnight?”
“Of course. You could stay here as long as you wanted.” She chuckled when he moved his hand up, knowing that she seldom bothered with knickers when she was alone. “But overnight is obvious. Why, did you think I’d stay mad at you?”
“As long as I want?” He asked, raising an eyebrow. His hand moved up over her hip, around to her backside and back toward her front again. He loved the feel of her naked skin under his hands. “Are you inviting me to move into your place?”
“Only if you want to.” She couldn’t help but blush a bit to herself. She’d only wanted him to touch her for the entirety of last week. Once he did, she couldn’t help but blush from the sheer amount of want. “Your place is nicer, though. I’d understand if you only wanted to stay tonight.”
"You want to move into my place?" Nikola asked, the smirk spreading as his hand slipped between her legs. His fingers expertly slipped between her folds and moved up and in.
She gasped, leaning forward and letting her forehead rest against his. “I didn’t - “ But then she realized that she had said that. “I did say that.” She bit her lower lip, trying to think straight even as she rocked against him. “Take it as you will. I’m not exactly thinking straight.”
"I like it when you're not exactly thinking straight." Nikola kissed her then, hungrily, putting a period at the end of That sentence. His hand turned a little to cup her sex, his palm pushing against her while a finger slipped up and inside her to pump slowly and forcefully. He wanted her so very badly he groaned into the kiss. He'd missed her and he'd missed this.
“Mmhmm, avoiding the subject,” she purred. She didn’t blame him; it was a rather heavy topic. But she couldn’t talk when he was moving like that. She’d missed him so terribly. All she’d wanted for a week was this. Her fingers moved to his trousers to unzip him.
"Postponing," Nikola said, then kissed her again. He could hardly stand how much he wanted her. His hand continued its work, but the other came down to Help her get his pants unfastened.
“Procrastinating,” she countered, getting his pants open and tugging them down. Kissing him harder, she moved her hips, breathing hard. Lulu couldn’t think of a time she didn’t want to do this with him, and she whimpered needily.
“Poh-tay-toe, Pah-tah-toe.” Nikola mumbled, moving his lips to her neck. Once his pants were unfastened and tugged downward, he released her, withdrew his hand, and turned her hips to help bring her into his lap. He didn’t want to wait, didn’t want to go to the bedroom. He brought a hand down between them to help guide her straight onto him, pulling her in close.
Lulu shuddered as he pressed into her, breathing out raggedly. Leaning back she tugged off the hockey jersey as that was going to get far too hot far too quickly. She looked down at Nikola, smiling as she slowly rocked her hips. He’d come back, she’d forgiven him, and this felt very much like picking up where they’d left off.
Both of his hands came to her hips to pull her firmly down on top of him. He gasped and shuddered as he filled her, fingertips digging into the soft skin of her sides. He waited for her to start moving, then brought both hands up to cup and knead her breasts.
There were things she missed about Nikola in the week where she hadn’t seen him. Most of them were sentimental - his voice, the way he smiled at her - but she admitted that this was one of the things she’d missed too. She loved how he tugged at her hips, how he pulled her down and nearly bruised her. She cried out as she started to move, gripping the back of the sofa behind him and moving harder than she usually did. She kissed him needily, whimpering into his mouth.
Nikola was groping at her breast roughly with one hand, the other moved back down to her hip to help guide her against him. It was fast, hard, and incredibly wonderful. His kisses were just as hungry, his tongue shoving its way into her mouth, exploring with a wanton abandon for propriety. He was a couple of seconds away from rolling her onto the floor and taking her missionary style, wanting to be the aggressor almost as much as wanting to let her have her way.
Leaning back so she could get her breath, Lulu tossed her hair and met his eyes. Any reservations she may have had melted away in that moment, and she smiled lopsidedly at him. He was hers, and she was his, and that feeling was a heady thing that made her get goosebumps all on its own. But she liked when Nikola took control - nothing was hotter to her than the low tone his voice took when he bossed her around - and she stopped moving so fast. Her hips took on a slow, teasing grind, and she smirked at her boyfriend.
Nikola raised an eyebrow as she slowed down. He knew what that meant. She was handing over the reigns, silently giving him permission to take over. And boy, did he want to. He was stronger than he looked, able to lift her gently and maneuver her to the floor on the other side of the sofa. No frilly beds or soft cushions for them at the moment. Nikola was too desperate for her, too hungry for that. He laid her down gently on the floor, then slid inside her again and started pumping near frantically. His mouth found her neck and he started to suckle her skin gently, his hips moving hard and fast against her.
The only trouble with this position was that he wouldn’t last long.
She didn’t mind that, especially not with her own orgasm bearing down on her. She’d spent a week dreaming of this. His touch made her shiver and she couldn’t help but arch into him, whimpering and pleading with him to go faster. Her leg moved up to wrap it around his hip.
Tugging his hair, she bit her lower lip hard as she came, shuddering and trying not to move too hard against him.
Nikola did everything in his power to go faster for her. His body was now moving apart from conscious thought, pounding up into her as his breathing became more and more ragged. Then he groaned, his whole body tensing up. His thrusts became irregular as he came, and finally he froze against her, waves of pleasure washing over him.
The blissed out, unthinking look Nikola got when he finished was one that Lulu always liked seeing if only because he so rarely seemed that much at peace in his waking life. She ran her hands over his back, smiling with her eyes closed, feeling exhausted. He’d done an emotional knockout when he came over to apologize, and her day had ended up not at all as she expected it to.
Nikola turned to press his lips in against her temple, her cheek, her neck. Then he nuzzled there, settling in against her for a moment. He climbed off of her and laid down beside her, wrapping his arms around her body and pulling her close against him. “I love you,” he whispered into her hair. Twice in one night. That could be a record.
Her arms went around his waist, burrowing closer to him. She smiled as he kissed her, kissing his cheek as he nuzzled into her hair. “I know, Nikola. I love you as well.” It made her smile to hear him say, and she let her hands trail up to loosen the buttons around his neck. “If you’d like, I can wash this for you.” She’d liked that he hadn’t even bothered stripping, but also liked taking care of him.
"You want to get me naked, do you? " he asked, smirking. "I don't suppose I can say no to that, " he responded. "You don't need to wash it, though. I'll wear it home." He didn't bother to stop her from undressing him, though.
“All right.” She smiled, helping him out of his shirt and smiling at him. “I do like you naked, though.” Lulu kissed his chest before sitting up and stretching. “You’ll have to apologize to the dog for taking up his place on the bed, you know.”
“Do I have to?” Nikola smirked, sitting up a little himself. He reached down to clean up a bit, then decided maybe he would let her toss his clothes in the wash. “Were you planning on running a load of clothes? I suppose I can toss these things in.” Look at them, being all domestic.
She nodded. “Don’t worry, I’ll be sure to run it on gentle.” She knew how to take care of clothes. Lulu took his clothes in hand and walked to the laundry room to take care of them, still naked. Pepsi was snoozing in his dog bed in her room, snoring softly, not having noticed the commotion in the living room. He was a terrible guard dog.
Nikola climbed up from the floor to wander into the restroom while she was taking care of the clothes. He used the facility and tidied himself up. He’d hate to get ick all over her furniture. He waited in the hallway, leaning in the doorframe, watching her while she put things into the laundry.
Lulu smiled at Nikola, feeling oddly shy as he watched her. “What?” She felt pink creep into the apples of her cheeks, smiling down as she carefully loaded the washer.
“You look beautiful.” Nikola said, softly. She was an absolutely exquisite specimen, if he’d ever seen one. Perhaps the most perfect human female he’d ever seen in his life. “I’d say that I’ve already forgiven you, so you don’t have to say such things, but I do like hearing them.” She started the machine, turning back to him so she could wrap her arms around him. “Are you hungry? I can order us something.” She liked the domesticity, it made her feel more at home.
Nikola chuckled softly. “I only said it because I meant it. No ulterior motives.” He lifted his hand up in the air, palm toward her. “Honest.” And then her arms were around him, and he wrapped his own around her, instinctively. “I’d love some food. What did you have in mind?”
“Mmm, I’m not the best cook,” she murmured, kissing his palm. “There’s Chinese that delivers here, or this really lovely Italian place.” She kissed along his chest, smiling up at him. “Of course, I’ll have to get dressed again. The burdens of polite society, I suppose.”
“I can cook for us,” Nikola reassured her. He meant it in general, not specifically for this meal. He loved the feeling of her in his arms. “But tonight... tonight we’ll let someone else do the cooking.” He tightened his grip on her at the feeling of her lips against his chest. “...you only need a robe to answer the door.”
“I’ll put my jersey back on,” she smiled, looking up at him. He smelled amazing, and she couldn’t help gently nipping at the skin on his chest. She closed her eyes, only then realizing how upset she’d have been if he’d remained with Helen, if he’d chosen to stay in that life. “Thank you,” she murmured. She needed him.
"Do you have any idea how incredibly sexy that Jersey makes you look? Even more so than normal? " he asked, wrapping his arms around her in return. Then he raised an eyebrow. "Thank me for what? "
“Really?” That made her laugh. “Why, are you an ice hockey fan?” She ran her fingers along his jaw, over his lips. “For coming back to me, whyever else would I thank you? I suppose I could thank you for the sex, but I don’t think you strictly minded it.”
"I'm a fan of you without knickers on." Nikola said, giving her a grin. "I definitely didn't mind it. I could do that every day if you'd let me. "
“Ah, and that brings us back to the topic you’ve been avoiding, Doctor Tesla.” Lulu smiled right back up at him before kissing his palm and walking nude toward the kitchen. She wanted a glass of wine.
“The topic I’ve been avoiding?” Nikola followed along after her, nude as well, watching her backside as she moved.
“The thing I stupidly brought up regarding our living situations.” She supposed she could’ve let it drop, but he’d been about to say something. She wanted to make sure it was what she suspected - that he wasn’t ready. “Tell me I’m a silly girl and to shush.”
Nikola paused. “You’re not a silly girl.” He said, stepping forward and wrapping his arms down and around her. “But don’t you think it’s a bit soon?”
“Probably.” She shrugged and closed her eyes, leaning against him. But she didn’t care. Lulu was lucky in that she was highly logical and understood that unless it was right for both of them, it wouldn’t be right for either of them. She’d wait.
"Let's revisit the idea again after the new year. " Nikola said softly, his hands wandering over her back. He needed a few days to figure it all out.
“Whenever you’re ready, Nikola. It’s hardly a crucial thing.” She kissed his chest again, smiling, her long hair trailing almost to her bare waist. “What is, however, is what we’re having for dinner. Otherwise I may have to nibble on you more.”
"You mentioned Chinese. " Nikola said softly, running his hand over that long, beautiful hair. "That sounds easiest. And all you need is a phone, a robe, and a little time."
“Mmm, it sounds good.” She smiled up at him and stroked his cheek. “Let me know what you want?” She moved to find her menus, sorting through the drawer she kept them in.
“I’ll have whatever you’re having.” Nikola said, leaving his arms wrapped down and around her. He moved with her to the drawer, smiling a little at the feel of her body against his. “Doesn’t matter to me.”
She giggled when his arms stayed around her. “Mm, I’m not even that hungry, really.” She kissed his neck, glad that he was at least spending the night. “Maybe we should order after we have sex in the shower.”
“I can’t say no to that.” Nikola purred, his hands wandering over her naked body. He turned to lead her out of the kitchen, kissing her neck along the way.
