Scott had, predictably for him, put Emma’s present in the tree. There was an envelope and a wrapped box, positioned among some of the ornaments. It was rather difficult to see without searching for it.
He poured them some eggnog and sat down on the couch, letting the fireplace warm him from the walk.
Emma accepted her glass, and went to get Scott’s present from the entryway. “I wasn’t exactly sure what to get you, but I do hope you like it.” It was hard to buy for someone she’d known less than a month.
"I'll probably like just about anything you want to get me." Scott took a sip from his eggnog, watching Emma as she moved around. He got a special sort of pleasure from just.... watching her.
She curled up on the couch next to him, and handed the bag over. It had a pair of gift cards, one for a local sporting goods store (with a holiday themed picture of a pool table), and one to a pool hall with good reviews on Yelp. There was also a nice watch, which she hoped he’d like, even though he hadn’t said anything about actually wearing one. She watched him as he opened it, hoping he would like it.
Scott opened the back and pulled everything out. The gift cards made him chuckle. "I've never actually gone into that place. I guess now I have an excuse. I'll probably get banned." He winked at her, then opened the watch and looked at it. He got a thoughtful expression on his face, then put the watch on. "I love it, thank you."
She chuckled when he winked at her. “I’m not responsible for any negative effects the gifts might have on your public perception.” She smiled when he put the watch on. “You’re welcome. I know it’s not as convenient as using your phone as a clock, but I thought it would look good on you.”
"I wouldn't be able to resist doing a little sharking," he winked, then quickly set the watch's settings to more preferred option. "I'll just have to get used to looking at my wrist again. Easy to fall out of that habit."
“It’s not a big deal if you don’t wear it all the time. Jewelry is always a risky gift, and I wouldn’t want you to change your habits to accommodate it.” At least he liked it all, even if it wasn’t the most awesome gift ever. If there was a next year, she was certain she’d do better.
Scott smiled. "Yours is hidden in the tree, see if you could find it." He'd gotten her a gift card for a spa treatment, as well as some jewelery. They might have been thinking along the same lines.
Emma laughed. “Oh, so I don’t rate delivery service, huh?” She kissed his cheek before getting up to examine the tree. She sipped her eggnog as she analyzed it, looking for the thing that was out of place. The envelope was the first thing she found, and it helped her locate the rest of the gift. She laughed a little, amused at the search, then sat next to Scott again, opening the card first. It was typical, but she still smiled at it. She tucked the card carefully into its envelope and put it on the coffee table before opening the actual present. The gift card made her laugh. He’d been thinking along the same lines. “Oh, I love this place.” She’d been to most of the spas in town, and this was one of the better ones. The necklace was gorgeous. Emma smiled widely when she saw it. “This is beautiful.” She admired it for a moment, the light in the room making the diamond sparkle. “Can you help me put it on?” It was better to ask for help than spend ten minutes trying to get it to fasten.
He thought she needed to treat herself. After the craziness at the beginning of the month, plus just being a teacher in general? A spa day would probably be nice, relaxing and safe.
"I was hoping to watch you spend an hour trying to get it on," Scott said, getting to his feet and pressing behind her. He clasped the necklace, and then kissed the back of her neck.
She chuckled. “I’m sure I would make amusing faces, but we have better uses for our time.” Beside, his method was much more enjoyable. She shivered when he kissed her. “Thank you.”
"You're welcome." His voice was soft, and his breath warmed her ear. Scott turned her around in his arms so he could kiss her, proper on the lips. Not entirely proper, of course. It was gentle and sweet at first, with an underlying fire.
She let herself be moved, her hands moving to his waist as they kissed. She wanted him, of course, but there were other feelings as well. Her heart was racing, and she felt slightly lost for a moment. The other feelings weren’t unpleasant, so she decided not to worry about them for the moment. There were other, more interesting things, to do. Naval gazing would have to wait. She slowly slid closer, her arms circling his waist as she settled against him, the kiss intensifying as she moved closer.
Scott held Emma against himself while they kiss. The kiss deepened further, filled with that fire, and hunger. He broke it, finally.
"Why do I always need you?"
“I wish I knew. I feel the same way.” She looked into his eyes, her face relaxed, honest to a degree that almost frightened her. The whole thing was a little frightening, but she couldn’t help herself. “I think about you so much, you’re in my head more than anyone else has been before.”
The irony in her statement was not lost on Scott. "Maybe you just read my mind." He winked at her, then leaned in and gave her another kiss.
She kissed him again, the irony totally lost on her, at the moment. Irony wasn’t a big interest of hers at the moment, anyway. Kissing was much more important. Her hands slid up his back loving this closeness, and this connection with him, even if it was scary.
Sometimes you needed to face your fears. Scott started to pull Emma back towards the bedroom, his arms around her waist and his lips still locked onto hers.
She followed him, stepping carefully. It lasted for a good five seconds before she stepped on his foot and nearly fell. She laughed in an undignified manner as she righted herself. “Sorry, I’m not terribly co-ordinated in that kind of situation.”
Laughing, Scott scooped her up damsel style and carried her into the bedroom. He kicked the door closed behind him."I'll just have to be your legs, then."
Emma laughed. “I can live with that.” She kissed his neck as he carried her the remaining few feet. It was strange and amusing how quickly this had become not just okay, but welcome.
Scott set about making her feel not just okay, and welcome, but as if she was the most perfect woman in the world.
