Thor smiled as he settled back, shaking his head. He had been having good visitors the last few days, and he was feeling rather happy. Somehow, he had not realized that he had made this many friends, and now, here, it was helping. being alone in the hospital was bad, but he knew he needed to rest and recover and possibly go through more surgeries.
He was hoping to just rest and enjoy the day and maybe have more visitors, so he would not sleep and have more nightmares.
Emma knocked gently on the door, to make sure he was clothed. She was so grateful to Thor, a near stranger who’d saved her life. She had a wrapped bag of pistachios to give him.
Thor smiled, raising his voice. “Come in... whoever you are!” He had a couple of people saying they would come by. He just had no idea who this one would be.
He was currently under the covers, one arm mostly in a cast, the other free save two fingers in splintcasts.
Emma stepped in, her low heels clicking on the linoleum. “Good afternoon, Thor.” She smiled, moving into the room. She winced a little when she saw how banged up he’d gotten, but after all, he was lucky to be alive. “I hope you’re not too bored.”
Thor smiled at her. “Hello, pretty teacher who rams robots with small cars. Welcome to my strange room.” He grinned at her wider. “Very bored, but I am surviving.” he nodded.
“How are you?”
Emma chuckled, putting the pistachios by his bed. “God, everytime I think I’m sane and normal, I remember that and just about die laughing at myself.” She reached into her pocket and produced a book. “I’m doing okay. As well as can be expected I suppose.” She took a seat. “But I imagine you’re doing worse, so I’ll spare you.”
Thor smiled at her. “There is no normal, I think. Just varying shades of odd.” He listened then reached out to poke her. he had made sure the seats were close enough for that. “Just because i am doing worse does not mean you should not tell me. I am curious.” He nodded.
“Life has been odd at us, and we should not turn away from others who have experienced it.”
Emma shook her head. “I’ve complained about it enough. I just want to listen to what you have to say. What happened?”
“My door jammed and the the quarry fell on me. Then a hammer fell on top of the robot that fell in the quarry.” he paused and nodded. “And I dreamed of being... someone else and was stuck in a coma thinking I was dead for what felt like forever.” he smiled. “So... not much.”
Emma shook her head. “That night was insane. I’m so sorry you were hurt.”
Thor shrugged. “I didn’t plan it, but I did what I did because it would work, and it did. I’m glad you and Scott are okay.”
She nodded. “We are. It’s been so strange. So much has happened at once. I feel like I was wearing a blindfold up to this point.” She felt a little overwhelmed by it all. It was a feeling she absolutely hated.
Thor smiled at her. “Oh? How so?” That intrigued him. “Is it the dreams, or something else?” Like being chased and almost killed by a giant robot.
“The dreams. My best friend has them as well, and the things she told me recently made me feel like I’m a terrible friend for not noticing.” She looked down, her face thoughtful. She hated that the dreams seemed to make everyone suffer so much.
Thor listened and nodded. “I can understand that. I think there might be...” He paused, working to word his thoughts just right. ”whatever power is doing this, I think, is also keeping some people from noticing, most people even.” Thor hmmmed and nodded. “LIke a somebody’s else’s business filter, to borrow from a book I once read.”
Emma snorted. “Yes, it was very much like a SEP field.” She smiled wryly at him. “But I should still have noticed these things. When it comes to the people I care about, everything is my business.”
Thor shook his head. “Not if it was deliberately cloaked form you. Sometimes, things are out of our control. I have had to learn that lately, much to my... annoyance.” he waved a hand at his current situation.
Emma laughed a little. “It seems that sits as well with you as it does with me.” She hated the feeling of helplessness that came with these dreams. She hated their inevitability.
Thor nodded. “Not a fan, yes.” He hmmmed. “We just have to find ways to do our own thing, within the framework of life.”
“I have no doubt we’ll both find our way. I just don’t like disruptions. It’s probably going to make a political career impossible, and it was already difficult. Not many schoolteachers get elected to higher office.” She wasn’t sure she minded. If the woman invading her head was as manipulative as she seemed, the world was probably better off.
Thor shook his head, disagreeing. “When I get out of here, I’ll throw you a fundraiser. Between the money we’ll raise and the way it will raise your profile, you won’t have any problem starting a political career.” He spoke softly but certainly.
She snorted. “I suppose. I could run for city council. I did fail to get a school board position, but there’s more I could do as a member of city council.”
Thor nodded. “You seem a sensible woman. What do you want to do?” He was curious.
“I just want to make things a little better for the kids in my classes. They come from such hard lives, and I feel like there’s so little support for them. The extreme cases have help, but I want to put something in place to help people before their cases become extreme. Prevention is worlds better than cure.”
Thor nodded, listening and smiled wider. Her goals were laudable and supportable, and he believed they could help. And that meant he could support her and know he was doing good, not just a favor for a friend. Even better.
“Then we’ll just have to make sure you get a chance.”
She smiled. “We’ll see. For now, I’m happy with how things are going, dreams excluded.”
“Good.” Thor smiled. “I hope things continue to go well for you. Do you have plans for Christmas?”
Emma couldn’t help the bright smile that developed when asked about Christmas. “Yes. I’m going to spend it at Scott’s house.”
“Good on you.” Thor smiled more. “I hope it is a very good Christmas.”
“I think it will be.” She felt her grin getting wider, and wished it wouldn’t. She was acting ridiculous. “I hope yours is nice as well.”
Thor smiled. “Thank you. I’m sure it will be. Tis the season.” With a smile, he lay back again, sighing. “It will be good to get most of these casts off, by then.” He nodded, and just rested, growing tired already, silly body.
Emma moved to kiss his forehead. “You should rest. I’ll stop by Christmas morning with another book. Take care of yourself.”
Thor smiled. And resisted mightily the urge to grope her.
“You too. enjoy yourself.”
FIN!
