The holiday season was a time of mixed feelings for Holly. She’d needed to get out of the house, and the mall seemed as good a place as any. With the crush of holiday shoppers, she could lift wallets and watches to her heart’s content, with little to no notice - everyone was too busy and too distracted by their business to notice one random curly-haired blonde wandering around.
Romana usually used online for shopping when it came to Christmas presents, but at the moment, it was easier to run to the mall. Here at the mall she was just looking for a couple of things and minding her own business. Shopping without having her daughter around was much easier. Looking in one window, she barely noticed the feel of hands in her bag until it was almost too late. When she realized a moment later, she turned to look around for the culprit.
Holly's head bobbed through the crowd as she moved through it and away from Romana. She didn't move in any hurry - that brought attention. The key was to look inconspicuous. She couldn't resist a wallet that was just sticking out of a man's pockets though, and brushed close to him.
When she moved away, the wallet was gone from that pocket. She grinned to herself.
Moving through the crowd, she waited until she thought she saw the person who took it. But was it them? Oh she didn’t know. Son of a bitch. “Give me back my wallet!” she yelled, hoping that maybe it would catch someone’s attention and that they would stop or give pause so that she would make sure that she had the right person.
Some heads turned, and panicking, Holly ducked into the ladies room. Had she been seen? She ran into a stall, taking out wallets and removing cash as quickly as she could and shoving wallets into the sanitation seat dispenser. She'd gotten greedy, damn it! Maybe there was a window she could crawl out of, or something.
Outside, there was a commotion, and then a scuffle as the wrong people started getting blamed.
Ah-ha. There she was. Romana could see her duck into the bathroom. Her eyes narrowed and she pushed through the people in order to follow her into the bathroom. Dammit. Where the hell had she gotten to? Fighting through people was hard enough but eventually she got to the bathroom. Hopefully she was still in here.
“I want my wallet back.”
"What?" Holly asked, jumping a bit. Her voice shook a little too much but she tried to push through a normal sounding, casual voice. She looked back at the stall and added, "Your wallet? What wallet?"
“My wallet. You took it. Now you can give it back, and we can call it a day. Or I can get the cops. Your choice.” Romana put her hands on her hips and waited for the girl to make up her mind.
Damn it, Holly thought. She remembered Romana's wallet, because she liked the feel of it. Giving up on stashing away the ill-gotten goods (or rather, eliminating the evidence, she pulled Romana's out of a pocket and opened the stall, holding it out and waggling it. "I give this back an' ya don't breathe a word to any authorities, kay?"
For a minute, Romana thought she was going to have to leave and get the cops. Thankfully though, that didn’t seem like it was going to be necessary. When Holly opened the stall, she reached over and took her money and then made sure everything was there. “I won’t go telling the police. Don’t worry.” She didn’t have any like of the police as it was, actually. “Next time you go stealing people’s things, try to hide better. Hm?” And honestly, she didn’t care about anyone else’s money.
"Hey!" Holly narrowed her blue eyes. She was better than that, wasn't she? "I'm better than that. I'm just...tired. That's all. Maybe I gotta little greedy." The blonde folded her arms, shifting from one foot to the other and back again. "Ya really won't call the cop?"
Romana shrugged her shoulder a bit. It wasn’t her place to judge all of that stuff. “It’s Christmas. You’re forgiven, I guess.” Maybe Romana was just lucky that she was good at noticing that kind of thing. “No, I’m not going to call the cops. Like I said, Christmas. If I ever see or catch you stealing more wallets again though, that’s another story. I’m not a bleeding heart all the time.”
"Just on Christmas then? What do I owe ya?" Holly fidgeted more. Nothing in life came free and she didn't think this would be an exception. Kindness was never always kindness. It was a cynical viewpoint but it had protected her most of her life.
"Just on Christmas," she agreed with a nod of her head. Owe? Hm. Romana couldn't think of anything. "Just try not steal money from people whom need it as much as you. Try sticking with the rich people, okay? Have a good Christmas and a good night." Holding onto her wallet, she turned to head out of the bathroom and go back to shopping.
“There’s a place on address. They don’t get good meals very often. That’s where most of the money I steal goes.” Not all of it, of course, but a lot of it. Holly hadn’t even intended on saying anything.
Romana smiled back at the girl. “That’s good. I hope you have a good Christmas.” And hopefully she might never have to have this kind of encounter again.
