One of the nice things about living right above where he worked was that Fred was always early for work. After all, all he had to do was get up, brush his teeth and get dressed and he was set to go.
It also meant that he could indulge in the coffee and little pastries across the street before he had to open shop.
Which is what he was just about to do. He wandered into the shop, half whistling to himself as he opened the door -- only to spot Verity already there. “Moooorning,” he said, sing-song, to his employee as he got into line behind her.
Verity was exhausted. She didn’t really know why, either, she just was. She hadn’t been sleeping all that well since... well, all the crap with Oliver, really. A part of her wished that she’d never met him, but another part of her knew that they were destined to meet, and there was far more there than meets the eye.
She turned at the sound of the voice, and gave Fred (she could tell this morning, sometimes she couldn’t) a tired smile and a nod. “Morning. We really need to get a Keurig for the store room. You know, you can program them to come on at the right time, and turn off when you want them to?” She said, then stepped forward in line. There was still another customer in front of her.
“A what?” Said Fred, genuinely lost on what she was talking about. He’d never owned a coffee machine in his life beside the old model from the 70’s that his parents owned. He liked socializing so well, that he’d never even considered getting one.
“Keurig,” Verity repeated. “They’re around a hundred dollars for a good one. They make coffee and keep water hot all day so you can have tea whenever you want. Or... y’know... more coffee.” She shrugged softly. “Though, I suppose there’s something to be said for walking across the street and talking to other human beings for a few minutes each day when you get your coffee.”
“Right,” Fred agreed, making a mental note of the contraption she was asking about. Maybe for Christmas. If he could be bothered to buy anything serious. “You seem tired,” he pointed out, possibly quite obviously, as the line moved slowly forward.
“I’ve been... emotionally drained, I think.” Verity said, then gave a little sigh. “I met this guy... crazy about him... but he’s a player, and I’m terrified of getting close, even though that’s the only thing in the world I wanna do. So I’m really torn. I can just go with it, and inevitably have my heart broken,” though, when she first came to work at For the Lulz it was after her ex-boyfriend cheated on her, and she’d been absolutely broken at the time, “or I can push someone I truly and genuinely like and feel a connection with because I’m afraid of getting hurt.”
Wow, that was some babbling.
Fred took a moment to just blink over all the words Verity had just vomited out at him. It was rare that she vocalized her issues -- with him anyway -- so it must have been weighing on her for a while. “Whoa, whoa,” he said. “Slow down for a minute, girlfriend. Let’s get our drinks first, yeah? And then we’ll chat it all out and fix it.” Fred Weasley: such a sassy BFF.
Verity gave a sheepish chuckle, feeling a little embarrassed that she’d blurted all of that out. Of course, Fred and George had become like brothers to her... not that they needed another sibling, anyway. “All right,” she said. “Drinks first. Then we’ll talk more about this... ugh, this conundrum.”
Fred nodded sympathetically, and once they got to the front of the line, he ordered and paid for both of their coffees -- not that he really needed to, considering they were done and waiting by the time they got up there anyway. That was the convenience of working across the street from a coffee shop, he supposed.
“Now then,” he said, ushering her to a secluded little area near the front of the shop. “Tell me.”
Verity was willing to just head straight across the street and get into For the Lulz, so they could start opening the shop while they talked. But they had a few minutes, if they wanted to sit at one of the tables in the coffee shop and relax... either way worked for her.
“It’s... there’s this guy. The Football player, I’m sure I’ve mentioned him,” No, not the God-of-a-Man that I nearly fucked in the back room. “Oliver Wood? He... I just don’t understand it. He’s so... amazing.”
“I’ve heard him mentioned a bit,” Fred agreed, thoughtfully. “And see him around on the Net. How’s it hard to understand an amazing bloke?”
“I just... whenever we’re together it feels like we’ve got history. Chemistry. Maybe I’m reading too much into things, but I touch him and it feels like we’ve touched before. --Not in the naughty way,” she added, frowning a little. “Just in general. Anyway, I’m undoubtedly reading too much into it. He seems to like me, sure, but he likes lots of girls.”
Fred considered this for a moment, trying to read completely between the lines on this one. “Oh,” he said finally, after sipping at his coffee for a moment. “You’re worried if you get too invested, he’ll cheat on you?”
Verity nodded. “Well, he certainly sees a lot of girls. He was with two different girls within a couple days of our date.” She said, frowning. Lizzy had said she was sitting on the bed with his hand up her skirt. Verity wanted to be the only girl in his life. She was just stubborn and selfish, and though she knew that it wasn’t possible, that’s still what she wanted.
Fred giving advice about men or relationships in general was a little bit laughable, considering he almost never dated, and basically only hung around his twin brother all day. But hey, he could always try. “Oh,” Fred said, again. “Well. Some guys don’t know if it’s serious or not, you know? And unless you tell them so, they’re, uh... always on the lookout.”
“Right.” Verity said. She was frowning a bit, and gave a sigh. “I suppose it’s not fair of me to expect fidelity in someone I’m just casually dating. But I don’t really want to date someone who’s dating a bunch of other people.” She paused. “I don’t want to share.” That was what had been the end of her previous relationship.
Fred gave a nod, agreeing. Dating was weird in the first place, but extra weird when the person you were kind of seeing was kind of seeing other people at the same time. “You have to tell them that,” he said. “Most will agree to it if they like you enough. And if they don’t -- well, then you know how that’s going to go, right?” He paused to sip at his coffee, and then grinned. “But I expect it probably means y’can’t have hot quickies in the back anymore with randoms, eh?”
Verity went rather pink at that. “...yes, that’s exactly what that means.” She said, teeth clenched slightly. She was incredibly embarrassed about it, especially considering Fred and George kept bringing it up and making fun. “Though, I’m not really interested in having sex with strangers anymore.” Thor was pretty much the only one.
Fred gave an expression that was a little more than cheeky, and it was basically his default expression. “Yes, well. That covers that then, eh?”
Verity turned to look at him, then gave a little laugh. Her cheeks were pink. “Don’t you get any ideas, Frederick Reginald Weasley,” she really had no idea what ‘Fred’ was short for, if anything, or what his middle name was, so she made it up. “You’re about as strange as they come.”
Fred was short for nothing. But he was pretty sure he liked the name that she’d just made up for him, so only grinned. “Yes,” Fred said, raising his head up high and having no shame for it. “So I have been told.”
Verity gave a laugh. She lifted her coffee cup, shaking her head, and turned to head back to the shop.
