Whatever Carol was thinking, she didn’t quite know, herself. She stared at her Starkphone, then rubbed her face with her other hand and put it down. They were just joking around, but what if they weren’t? And why was she scared of that, but okay with that?
She didn’t have eggnog yet, and didn’t know what Jess was actually going to do, so just sort of curled up on the couch with some hot chocolate and waited.
Having been at work for quite a while, Jess could have gone home a while ago. She just had decided to stay late. Though right now, she no longer had a reason to. They’d been flirting over the phone, which had been amusing. Now she was set on proving Carol right about the way seh felt about her.
It took her a while, but she finally knocked on Carol’s door and then just let herself in. “Carol?” she called out, hanging up her coat and then going to find her bestie.
Carol's cat attempted to intercept Jessica in the hallway, rubbing against her ankles and otherwise demanding attention. Carol herself set her beverage aside and got up from the couch. "Hey. How's it feel to be ditching work?" She flashed a teasing grin at her friend, walking over to give her a hug.
"Being the naughty one for a change." She might have been flirting a little bit. It wasn't something she was good at though it came sort of naturally when she did it with Jessica.
Leaning down, Jess gave the cat some attention, giving her a thorough petting before she let herself wander further into the apartment. “It feels pretty damn good. I was staying late anyway. Might as well call it a night.” She leaned in and hugged Carol back with a smile.
“I do enjoy being naughty when it happens,” she said with a smirk.
Carol shoo'd the cat away with her foot, not wanting Jessica's attention split. Reluctantly, she pulled back from the hug. "Want some hot cocoa? I have some myself and I can warm you up some really quick. It's the powder stuff but it'll do."
She turned, and walked towards the kitchen, shoulders tense. "And how often do you get to be naughty?"
It was fine with her if her attention wasn’t split. She could pet the cat some other time. “Yeah, hot cocoa sounds good.” Even if it was powder, it was better than nothing. She was a little cold from outside anyway.
“Not as often as I’d like,” she confessed, following her towards the kitchen. “If I had my way, I’d get to be naughtier than I am.”
"What would that entail?" There was the clatter of ceramic as she got two mugs down and filled them with water, before bringing them to the microwave. Hot chocolate, lazy style. She keyed in some time, then turned and leaned her hip against the counter. She felt a little awkward, and nervous, but put on a confident smile.
Jessica pursed her lips a bit and then gave a smile. “Well you know, skipping work.. playing hooky and clearly making you squirm a bit.” Since she was doing such a good job of that already.
"I'm not squirming," Carol replied, while clearly squirming.
"I'm not squirming," Carol replied, while clearly squirming. She couldn't figure out Jessica's smile. She couldn't figure any of this out. "Jessica, I'm...really... Really...I don't know what I'm doing."
“You’re squirming a little bit,” she protested back. Maybe she was pushing a little too hard. “I know.. I don’t mean to put any pressure on you. You’re my best friend. I don’t want to do anything to hurt you or make things weird between us. You’re too important.”
Carol twirled her hands around her head. "I'm just..." She sighed when the microwave beeped and then turned around to get the mugs out. It gave her a chance to keep herself busy while she prepared the hot chocolate, complete with little marshmellows.
Then she was done, and handing Jessica her mug, and their hands brushed. She nearly dropped the mug, and barely managed to avoid spilling any.
"I think things are already a little weird, and that's all my fault. Or maybe Lulu's fault."
Taking her mug, Jessica took a small ship and sighed. “Calm down. This isn’t going to help anyone if you’re dropping hot chocolate all over yourself and I have to take you to the ER. It’s no one’s fault. Don’t be weird. I’m still Jess. How about we just start acting normal? Like us. Please.”
"Normal..I think I can do that." She didn't really want to go to the ER. Carol took a careful sip of the hot chocolate. The warmth helped calm her. She took several more sips, then set the chocolate on the counter. She wanted to...she wanted to...she wanted to touch her.
"Just tell me I'm not the only one feeling like the air gets thick when we're together?"
Going to the ER would not help either one of them. “Good, normal’s good.” She was still a little wary, and figured that they needed to talk about this. But she wasn’t sure what to say. Besides the fact that they shouldn’t rush into a bunch of stuff that made them feel awkward.
“No, you’re not the only one. We’re just.. “ she figured she might as well just be honest. “I’m attracted to you. I don’t know if you can say the same but.. I feel it, when we’re together.”
"I..feel it too." Okay, that was a start, and now it hung in the air. Carol took a deep breath, and let it out. She picked up the hot chocolate, took Jessica's hand, and led her back into living room and onto the couch. "Lets sit."
She sat down herself and put her mug on the coffee table. "I never even thought it was an option for me. Or you! How could I not know this about you? Was I that oblivious?"
Not that she really needed to hear that Carol felt the same thing, because it was clear that she did. However it was nice to hear it. She went with Carol and sat down next to her on the couch. “Yeah good idea.”
Jess put her mug down too so that she could give her attention back to Carol. “Sometimes it doesn’t matter about .. labels. It just matters about a person. I don’t think I’d.. well I like women, but you’re the only one I’d consider being with.”
"Oh." Carol's face couldn't choose between paling or blushing. The latter one out and she ducked her head, far from the confident pilot she usually was. She put her hand on Jessica's leg, squeezing it and drawing up her strength. She wasn't sure she was ready for anything, but she wasn't sure she wasn't, either.
"I feel like I'm kind of in limbo. I don't know if I should move forward, but I don't want to move back. Just being around you has always made me kind of ...content. I always look forward to seeing you. I just never thought about anything...physical until lately."
It was cute the way she was nervous and was blushing and everything. It didn’t happen very often, so she learned to really love those moments. She put her hand on top of Carol’s and tried to look as reassuring as possible.
“There’s no pressure, no rush no anything. You and me will always be best friends. If it goes further, than that’s fine and if it doesn’t, that’s fine too. I always look forward to seeing you too, but you’re right. That doesn’t mean you want to sleep with me. You need time to think. I don’t mind.”
Carol closed her eyes as relief flooded through her. She laughed, and leaned against Jessica, resting her head on her shoulder and turning her hand upside down so it was palm to palm with Jessica's. "I really need time to think. ...I don't want you to get your hopes up but...don't count anything out yet?"
The thought of sleeping with Jessica made her pulse quicken. She swallowed, mouth dry, and wondered if Jessica ever had. With a woman. She decided not to ask. "...I'm taking this well, right? Right. ..I'm lucky to have you as a friend."
Reaching her arm around Carol, Jess put her fingers into Carol’s hair and petted it a bit. “My hopes aren’t up. You take all the time you need. I’m always here. I’m not going to go anywhere.” And that she promised. It wasn’t like she would ever make Carol have some kind of timeline.
“Yeah I think you’re taking this well. Some people would just be disgusted and then tell me to get the hell out of their place.” She shrugged a little. “We’re both lucky to have each other.”
"You could never disgust me, no matter what you did." Carol's voice was light, Jess's fingers in her hair a sensation that was familiar. How many times had they pet each other's hair over the years?
But it was also new. Very new, and not unwelcome at all. She closed her eyes. "Do you want to stay the night? It's cold, and getting late, and we can watch some old cheesy Christmas movies."
That was nice to hear, even if she knew it always and never doubted it for a second, it was still nice to hear. “Thanks,” she murmured, still running her fingers through the other woman’s hair. “Yeah sure, I can stay the night. Watching Christmas movies sounds like fun.” Though she hadn’t brought any clothes with her, it didn’t matter much.
Carol leaned into Jessica's arms, eyes still closed. She could put something on when she felt like moving. Until then, she was going to enjoy the intimacy. She rested a hand on Jessica's knee, rubbing in light circles. "Lets start with Rudolph."
“Rudolph it is..” Though she didn’t immediately get up or anything. This was too nice for her to get up and ruin the moment. Eventually she moved her arm and kissed Carol on the forehead before getting up to put on the movie.
Carol's skin burned a little where Jessica's lips had met it. She lifted her head to watch Jess move, and wished she had someone she could talk to (not that talking to Jess was bad, but she needed an unbiased third party, here). She tried to read her body language, wanting to see what it said and compare it to Jessica's words.
Grabbing the dvd, she put it into the player and then went to sit back down with the remote. She got why Carol needed to talk to someone else about what was going on. A neutral party was probably a good idea. Still she sat down beside her friend and snuggled up beside her so that they could watch the movie.
