Later that night...
The bedroom was definitely a mess. There were wine glasses on top of the dresser, a half-empty can of whipped cream on the floor, and at least two ‘outfits’, along with the one that Kasumi had been wearing on her way into the cabin. Luckily the birthday candles hadn’t burned anything down, but the end table was damaged beyond repair, and there was a long scuff along the middle of the wall.
The one peaceful scene in the middle of all the madness was the couple sleeping on the bed. The sheets were a mess around them, but they were snugly wrapped around each other, breathing slow and even.
Wrex wasn't sure which outfit had been his favorite. The nurse had some high points but the firefighter had been something special. They'd both been astonishing, and his legs had refused to obey any orders by the time they'd collapsed on the bed together. Her scent had lured him to sleep, and the feel of her skin was something that poets wrote about.
Kasumi turned over, tossing as her dreams became more and more restless. All of their work against the Reapers had culminated in this mission. She was crawling through the vents on the Collector Base, trying to bypass security. The vents were getting extremely hot, though.
She pushed the sheets away from her, beginning to feel suffocated. She rolled away from Wrex, her feet accidentally kicking his leg. Her skin was burning up. "Shep!" she called in her sleep.
Wrex shifted in his sleep. His dreams had been repeats for a month now, so he wasn't all that bothered by them. But Kasumi's cry woke him up, and he sat up, a gun in hand and pointing at the door. There was nothing there. He set the gun aside and turned to Kasumi, shaking her shoulder gently. "Kasumi..wake up!"
Kasumi's skin was hot to the touch. It didn't seem like it should even be possible for a human to be that hot. She was crawling, moving toward the edge of the bed. "Shep.." She heard Wrex's voice, though. She just had to get through to him, but she was burning. "Wrex?" Her eyes opened.
"God, you're burning up." He picked Kasumi up like she weighed no more than a pillow, and started to carry her towards the shower. Her skin was practically scalding his, and the only thing he was certain of was that he had to get her temperature down. He tried to remember if Faiza was coming in today or if it was the nurse who was on site. "We'll get you cooled down, it'll be okay."
She was too disoriented to argue. Her head was spinning, and she was glad he was carrying her. She certainly wouldn't have been able to walk on her own. If she'd been a little more awake, she might have been wary about the idea of sitting in a bachelor's shower. Hopefully the shower floor had been cleaned recently. "The vents," she murmured, alternating between trying to push away from Wrex's bodyheat and trying to pull herself closer to him.
"What vents?" Wrex opened the window in the bathroom, letting cold air in. He sat her on the edge of the tub, and then turned the shower to frigid and turned it towards her. He shivered from the splashes that managed to hit him. He'd have been amused by her worry. The shower was still pretty new and he hadn't had the chance to mess it up. Yet.
"Collectors.. Had to disable security.." She shook her head, trying to clear her head. She took a deep breath, her fingers gripping the edge of the tub. She wasn't on a Collector Base, she was in Wrex's cabin. And she was soaking wet. Her temperature was dropping, and soon she was shivering.
He waited another few moments, then shut the shower off and wrapped her in a towel, rubbing warmth into Kasumi's body. He didn't want her to get sick from the sudden temperature changes. "You succeeded, of course." It was a statement of belief, if not fact. He simply didn't think she could fail.
Kasumi's dreams hadn't gotten that far, but she was sure he was right, if only because Shepard was behind the whole thing. Shepard hadn't come that far to fail. "I bet you're right," she said, pulling the towel closer around her. The cold water had been a jolt to her system, but it was the middle of the night and she was exhausted.
"I don't know if that was the scariest dream I've had, but it felt like the closest I've been to dying in them." She shivered again, but she wasn't sure it was the cold this time.
"Getting stuck in a vent isn't a good way to die," Wrex grumped, rubbing her arms and then carrying her back to the bed. Again, it was like she weighed nothing. He laid her down and tucked the blanket around her. "Do you want something to drink? Maybe hot chocolate with baileys?" Because booze fixes everything.
Wrex sat on the edge of the bed next to her, thinking, and rubbing her hip. He didn’t know if either of them would survive to the end, and he hadn’t asked Shepard yet. He didn’t want to.
She pondered that drink offer. "Mm, only if you can get it here without leaving the room." She didn't feel like getting up, and she'd rather he stay where he was, too. She was more desperate for his company than she was for booze.
She wanted to focus on being here, not on spaceships and firefights. This was real.
Wrex thought about it a moment. He had been practicing his biotics a bit, and could maybe float in some hot chocolate mix and mugs, but he wasn't sure if that would freak Kasumi out more, or what. So instead he wrapped his arms around her and pressed his lips against her scalp. "I probably could, but maybe it could wait."
Kasumi leaned against him, pulling the blanket up around her and closing her eyes. "It can wait," she agreed. Everything could wait. She lifted a hand to run her fingers over his forearm. She was very glad he was there. She had to bite back those words that had gotten her into trouble last time.
Wrex felt something tense in his chest. Like there was a sudden weight, or someone had reached in and grabbed his heart. It felt heavy. He looked at Kasumi, studying the curves of her face, and the expression she wore.
He wondered if cupcakes were enough for either of them.
