What: A random meeting
Warnings: None
Status: Complete
Faiza arrived bright and early at the site of the monthly free health clinic. A series of tents set up in a large parking lot in a very poor area of Orange County, she was more than happy to volunteer and help out those in need and unable to afford normal medical attention. She wore her white lab coat over scrubs, as well as her ‘doctor’ headscarf, simple white with no pattern on it. Checkups, shots, even a couple of broken bones occupied most of her morning, before she took a break to eat lunch.
“It is always this crowded, isn’t it?” Yuna asked lightly as she dropped into the seat next to the doctor, the only one left at the small workers table. It broke a part of her heart to see so many people sick and needing help and not being able to get it, except at these clinics. More than anything it reminded her of African and of all the sick and dying there they hadn’t been able to save. She always remembered those that she lost instead of those that she saved.
"Yes, it's really quite depressing. I suppose I'd vainly hoped that it wouldn't be the same as the last time I did this, except it's much worse," She replied. "I wouldn't say the NHS in England is perfect, but it's so much better than...this." She waved a hand towards all the lines. "
"I know what you mean," Yuna said as she twisted the top of her water bottle and it opened with a slight groan. "The lines in the Malaria camps in Africa were kind of like this just less... Orderly." By the time most had made it to those camps they could barely walk.
"Still wish we could help them all. I mean we do what we can but that's it. Most go back to a place they can't receive proper care."
"That must have been heartbreaking," Faiza replied, nodding her head. She'd always wanted to do some aide work. She still could, she supposed, once she was settled in at Urdnot Ranch more. "It's all politics and that's just ... sad."
Wasn't that the truth. It was all politics instead of people helping other people. "Honestly it didn't even occur to me while I was there. They kept us so busy..." She hadn't even know the day most of the time.
"Been working here long?"
"I've been back about two weeks now. I used to live here, but I was taking a sabbatical to London. I needed to clear my head from some things." She smiled at Yuna. "I'm Faiza, it's a pleasure to meet you."
“Yuna,” she said lightly as she introduced herself with her easy unassuming smile. “How was London? It is somewhere I have always wanted to visit but have not had the chance.” She had gone to Africa instead.
"I love London. I was born there so it was a treat to go back. I visited my old University and some old friends, did some volunteer work at Hospital and a lot of walking. You can cover a lot of London on foot if you use the buses and Underground properly."
It sounded like she had had a good trip. “Sounds like a pleasant time.” Like usually Yuna had come home from a trip to more work. It just was she didn’t know how to deal with down time. She always wanted to do something, save someone.
“One of these days I will get around to taking real time off.”
"Oh, I recommend it. You can't heal your patients if your own mind is fractures or your body ill. Doctor, heal thyself is more than a joke!" She laughed, holding up a finger and waggling it.
She had to laugh. “I will try to keep that in mind. I am sure my friends would love it if I took one less shift and they got to remember what I looked like.” The few friends she did have, Yuna treasured. “I have one friend that would be more than happy to remind me how to be a little crazy.”
"Do it. Doctor's orders," Faiza replied, grinning good naturedly at her. "I really mean it. Take a little time out for yourself, or for hobbies. I work myself ragged and I still find time for a little fun. I think I even have a bloke chasing after me that I don't know what to do with."
Yuna nodded. She would find the time to do that. “A cute guy, right?” It was the best type to have chase you around. Then again it had been a while since she had a guy follow her around. “I think I need to find myself one of those one of these days.”
"Very cute. Larger bloke, blonde and a bit fuzzy around the face. I'm not sure how I feel about it, to be completely honest. I don't date much." She took a bite of her sandwich as she thought about it. "I really don't know what to think about it, I'm not that pretty, and I know very well he tends to..find a lot of women to sleep with."
Yuna picked at her salad a bit. “I think you are prettier than you think,” not that it really was her place to say so. “But yeah, that type is kind of intimidating. They are usually pretty good at the whole sweeping you off your feet thing too.” They really were their own breed of poison. “Maybe just see how it goes?”
"I don't know. If I was looking for something, maybe," she replied, fidgeting with her headscarf in her nervousness. "He's so dashing. But there's this other bloke and he's also so dashing. It's best if I just avoid it altogether."
“Fair enough,” Yuna said with a nod of her head. Love wasn’t her forté. “I think I am with that last line of thinking. It has been a while for me too and you know what, I am okay with that. Despite what other people think.” She didn’t need someone to define her life for her. If she gave a guy her time it was because he earned it.
"We can be bachelorette's together." Faiza replied, laughing. "It's not like our profession gives us much freetime as it is, and I did order you to get time for yourself!"
“Sounds like the best thing I’ve heard all day,” Yuna said with a laugh as she reached for her water. “And that is saying since I had a patient earlier that thought it would be a good idea to stick some extremities in some very small places.” Those were usually the people that were surprised when the said extremities got stuck. She would leave the explanation at that.
"Oh..oh I'm so sorry," Faiza replied. Extremities could mean just about anything, but considering the topic of the conversation she had an idea what Yuna meant. "Strange things unusual places are usually the worst."
Yeah, it usually was a bad combination. “People are creative in the ways in which they get things stuck and the ways they injure themselves. I once had a guy that wanted to roll through a cactus garden,” because that sounded like a good idea. “The doctor was nice enough to let me and another nurse pluck out thousands of thorns.”
"Roll through a catcus garden? On purpose?." Faiza laughed, shaking her head. "What will they do next? I saw a vacuum incident in London, once."
At that she had to laugh. “Now that one I am not going to even ask about.” It did amuse her the stupid things that people did or got drunk and attempted. “They need to make sure we’re fully entertained at work I guess,” or something like that.
“As chaotic as it is I can’t see myself doing anything else.”
"It's worth it," Faiza agreed, looking back out at the lines of people. "I just wish there was more of me, or I could do more than I do. And that I didn't have to sleep, but I suppose I'd go mad eventually."
It was worth it in the end if they could save even one person. Yuna just wishes there was a way to save them all.
"We will just have to find a way to clone you and the worlds problems would be solved."
"The world doesn't need more than one of me. ... Although then I could field my own cricket team! Oh that would but fantastic!" A whole team of her, with how well she knew the rules and the game, they would kick ARSE!
She had to laugh. “I have to say that is a sport I have no idea on how to play or the rules or anything.” She had no problem admitting her lack of knowledge. “I usually just draw if I have some spare time.”
“I could teach you,” She replied, leaning forward, eyes bright with excitement. “It could be fun! I’ve been teaching some at risk kids out at Urdnot Ranch.”
It sounded fun. "I would like that!" She needed to do something more active. Drawing wasn't exactly the answer to being active. "Just let me know when."
"Splendid! Well.." Faiza got to her feet, "Shall we return to the trenches? There are sick people who need us."
“Yeah, we probably should.” Yuna agreed as she picked up her trash and dropped it into a nearby trash bin.
