Fluttershy didn’t know if she’d ever been so nervous. She may have been completely distracted during class and flubbed a few answers when the teacher called on her. Thankfully the professor had long learned that she was victim to terrible anxiety and forgave any wrong answers. If only her other professors were so nice.
Sighing she packed her things and tried to ignore the whispers from behind her. One of the girls that had done the dare came up to her and touched her shoulder making her flinch away. “Hey you! Yates! You ask him out yet?” The girl looked back to her friends who were giggling.
“You... You didn’t say him. You said i had to ask someone, not specifically him. And for your information I already did.” Held her books closer to her chest and tried to walk faster down the stairs. When she was out the door she looked up and around for that rainbow haired woman, more than panicked.
The girls gave each other a face and folded their arms. “Prove it.” Their words caused Fluttershy to squeak and get more frantic in looking around.
Clearly, now was the best possible time for RD to finally show. She’d not wanted to get there too early, just because it’d probably make her seem overeager, and that tended to put people off... well, some people. Fluttershy might’ve been different for all she knew.
It’d made sense to take the bike, because hey, it was quick, easy and she’d had that spare helmet kicking around for years now. When she pulled up, she flipped the visor open. “Hey, Fluttershy. C’mon, before the stupid around here starts catching...”
It was the noise that first startled her and she nearly dropped her books. She was quickly to recollect her nerves and turned around when her name was said.
“D-Dash...”Bit her lip and headed off to her. The girls that had been giving her such a hard time simply gawked. “A girl?!” They all stated in unison until the one that had been speaking before came over to them.
“You asked a girl out? I didn’t know you were a lez..”
Fluttershy sucked in her breath. She didn’t like all the terms, let alone being out right called one. She was nowhere close to be okay with whatever sexuality she happened to be. This was just one date.
That just wasn’t right. RD had never understood why people made such a big deal of things like this... girls could like girls, guys could like guys, and nothing was wrong with it at all. “Y’know, the only people who say things like that are the ones who have, uh, issues with their own sexualities...”
Well, nine times out of ten.
“Nah. I’ve dated girls. Not my thing. Too whiny.” The girl flipped her hair back. “Just never pinned this one to it.” She gave an almost evil smirk and patted Fluttershy on the shoulder, causing her to tense up.
Fluttershy didn’t like touched so suddenly. She meeped and watched as the girl and her friend laughed off. Holding her books closer to her she turned to Dash properly, partially hiding her face behind them. “I’m sorry...for... for my uh... friends.” Not really her friends, but she had no idea what to exactly call them.
“Really don’t seem like your friends, Fluttershy... friends don’t do things like that.” Really, it made RD all the more set on getting her actual friends. Ones that didn’t do terrible, terrible things... well, unless Pinkie’s insanity was a terrible thing. “You should probably just ignore ‘em. Not worth your time.”
“Oh... But they do. They’re... fine” Bit her lip and looked at the bike, then her books. “Uh... G-give me a moment.” Fluttershy rushed over to her tiny little yellow car and put her things in through the top opening of the driver side window before coming back empty handed.
Now came the fun part. “I... I’ve never ridden on one of these...”
“It’s not that hard, really!” Not that RD really ever tended to have passengers whilst on her bike. Didn’t mean she hadn’t learnt, though! “I’ve got a spare helmet you can use, and... well, as long as you hold on tight, things should be fine.”
“Oh... Oh uh... Okay.” Took the helmet when she was handed it and pushed it on. She managed to get it on backwards and started to flail. This was already off to an awkward start! Fluttershy moved closer while trying to turn the helmet around so that she could actually see.
Even though RD knew she probably shouldn’t, she couldn’t help but laugh, quickly moving to fix the helmet so it was the right way around. “Careful, Fluttershy. Kinda need you in one piece.”
Fluttershy pouted and crossed her arms at the laughing. It wasn’t nice to laugh at someone when they’d never done this before. “You don’t have to laugh at me...” Began tapping her foot until it was on the right way around.
“Didn’t mean anything bad by it. Honest.” Because, deep down inside, RD was a good person.
Maybe way deep down sometimes. Once the helmet was on right and she was showed how to work it, she straddled the bike behind her and held around her midsection. “Like... Like this?” Fluttershy put her head to her back and squeaked out of nervousness.
The closeness was actually kind of nice. Not that RD was about to let on, because hey, that’d be jumping the gun a little. “Yeah, like that. Hold as tight as you need to, okay?”
“Okay...” Tight mode activated. Fluttershy held tighter around her middle and locking her knees up against her hips. This was going to be scary and not fun, but the coffee after would make up for it. “You... Know where the nearest coffee place is, right?”
“I kinda looked it up after you texted me. Don’t worry, know where I’m going.” Because hey, RD had a pretty decent sense of direction, even with a pretty girl clinging to her.
Fluttershy was more than happy for that, meant less time she had to focus on actually trying to talk to her. Not that talking wasn’t nice and all. But talking and having to focus on clinging tight so she doesn’t fall off doesn’t work at all.
When they actually get to the shop, after going far too fast in her opinion, she shakily got off the bike and fixed the pants from where they were riding up uncomfortably. She took off the helmet and handed it back to her. “I can’t believe I’m doing this...” Never in a million years had she expected to be going on a date with another girl.
Sure, there was that little adoration for Sister Rebecca, but she figured that was just a student having affection for a wonderful teacher. That was normal, right?
If she’d asked RD, she probably would’ve pointed out that not every student adored their teachers. In fact, most people didn’t... “What, going on a date with another girl? It kinda happens...”
It wasn’t that uncommon, was it?
Fluttershy bit her lip and looked at her before taking this as the time to head into the coffee shop and hold their place in line. She went into the building and stood right into the door, all the fun of it being the busy hour where everyone off work got their coffee fixes.
Huh. Thankfully, the bike was easy to deal with, and RD was in there with her quick enough. They probably could’ve picked a better time for this, she realised, but... hey, it happened. Something to note down for another time. If there was another time.
“Sorry... Sorry we have such a wait.” Shifted her hips to get more comfortable before taking a few steps up as the line got shorter. Fluttershy had no idea what to do now, so she went quiet and put her hands together in front of her, head nervously down. It would take Dash starting the conversation to get things rolling, sadly. Not like she could really help it.
Conversation was a good thing, so RD had nothing against trying to start something up. It’d make things more interesting, at least... “So, uh... is it really that big a deal to go on a date with a girl? I mean... I’m not that different from what you’d get dating a guy.”
Other than the obvious differences, that was.
“My parents are Catholic... I’m not but... They’d never approve.” Bit her lip and stepped forward again. “But... I guess not. ” Looked up to her with those bright teal eyes. “Boys are annoying to me... They always have been. Too loud... Too, too loud.”
“Guys always tend to be like that. Not that I’ve really ever been interested in ‘em...” for as long as RD could remember, she’d only ever been interested in other girls. Guys were just annoying, for the most part, but could occasionally be decent friends - especially if they understood the whole ‘lesbians are not interested, no matter what’ thing. “You’ve just gotta go with what makes you comfortable when it comes to relationships, y’know?”
“I don’t know what makes me comfortable... I’ve never had one before as you know...” Put her head down again and stepped forward to quickly and bumped into the man in front of her. She inched back when he turned and glared. “I’m sorry!”
RD arched an eyebrow. Seriously? Grumpy bastard. “I’m gonna help you figure stuff out. Sounds like you need a hand with it all.”
“Why did you say yes?” Stood back up properly and moved forward a few steps. “And don’t just say because it’s the nice thing to do... er. Or do. If you want.” Ducked her head into her shoulders and sighed.
Now, why would she have done that? You didn’t say yes just to be nice to people... “I said yes because you’re... kinda interesting to me. Good interesting. The kind I’d like to find out more about, I guess.”
When they got up to the counter she placed her order, having to say it a few times because of course her voice got insanely quiet. Once things had been placed it was turned to Dash. Fluttershy had ordered just a cappuccino and a plate with a few snickerdoodle cookies. She may be more than a little curious as to what Dash will actually select.
RD wasn’t usually one for coffee, so she just ordered the first thing that seemed normal. She knew enough to avoid the ones that’d turn her into some kind of insane rainbow-haired Pinkie Pie clone, which was probably for the best - the OC barely held together with one Pinkie.
One Pinkie was more than enough. Fluttershy moved to pay for both of them before going off to wait at the end of the counter space. She was nervous and kept occasionally bringing her hands up to bite at her fingernails and cuticles. It was a nervous tick she always had, and didn’t expect it to go any time soon.
When RD noticed that, she gently took her hand, squeezing lightly. “There’s nothing to be nervous about, y’know. I’m not gonna do anything you don’t want or... whatever.”
“I... I... I can’t help.” Bit her lip instead, her cheeks turning bright pink at the mere IDEA that Rainbow was holding her hand. It felt nice, much nicer than the clammy hand of that boy during prom. When their drinks were ready, as well as the stack of cookies she’d made a quick add on of, she took them and moved for the very back of the room.
The back was probably the best place for them, considering it’d actually allow for some privacy. That was always good. “I can help you. Y’know, work on getting you a little less nervous, little more awesome.”
Not that Fluttershy wasn’t awesome already or anything.
Fluttershy looked up at her when she’d gotten comfortable, taking a tiny sip of her drink. It was too hot, but she was graceful in covering the discomfort of her tongue. As RD spoke, she made strict certain to listen intently. When it was a proper time to add her two cents she set the drink down and tipped her head. “I... I really don’t know about that. I don’t like when people try to change me. I don’t like too much change...”
“I’m not gonna change you that much. You’ll still be you, still be pretty awesome... in your own kind of way.” Because the stuff she did with animals was clearly that awesome. Even if it wasn’t exactly RD’s normal sort of thing.
“Like what?” Tipped her head to the side whilst eating one of the cookies she’d purchased. She pushed the place close to Dash and smiled sweetly. “So... What do you do for fun...”
“I run. Kinda have a thing for speed...” It was probably best not to mention the dreams, not yet. Saying ‘I sometimes dream I’m a pony!’ tended to make people look at you funny at the best of times. “That’s why I’ve got the bike. Appeals to me more.”
Fluttershy nodded, nervously twisting her leg around each other and by accident brushed one against Dash’s leg. “Oh my goodness! I’m sorry!” Tucked herself into her shoulders and behind her hair, cheeks a fiery shade of red.
That may well have made RD blush, just a little, but she was quick to hide it. Well, as much as she could. “It’s fine, really... kinda happens in places like this.”
“Y-yeah... Because the place is so small!” She took another sip of the coffee and made a pleased noise. Sweet and silky, like she liked it. She tipped her head and shivered when a gust of cool air brushed past them. “Oh my.” Bit her lip and brushed her hair back. “How is Tank?”
Ah, she’d been wondering when she was going to start asking about Tank! “He’s okay. I mean, for a tortoise... I sometimes think he might be kinda lonely, but I really don’t wanna deal with... that side of things.”
“Tortoise mating is quite interesting. You know, some species mate for life!” Squeaked happily and took another one of the cookies. “And having him mate at least once will be good for his penile function. You know, it’s not natural for humans to keep them from their natural processes.” Not the most usual of conversation topics, but she was far from usual.
Uh. Right. This wasn’t awkward at all, but... at least it got Fluttershy talking more, and that was what counted. Kind of. “I might get him a lady friend at some point, maybe. At least then he’ll have someone to go through it all with.”
Not that Tank’s life sucked or anything. By tortoise standards, he was pretty damn spoiled.
Fluttershy only nodded and thought for a second. “I’ve got a friend who might be able to help you! He knows a lot about tortoises. He owns twelve in his lab, all different species. I bet he could help you find a lovely mate for him.” Took another sip of her coffee before setting it down.
Ooh, that’d be handy. “One who’d be able to contain the incredible amounts of awesome that comes with being my pet?” It was a legitimate question! At least by RD’s standards. “‘Cause Tank only handles it ‘cause I made him those little goggles. They’re pretty kickass.”
“Female tortoises are extraordinary creatures. I bet they could be considered awesome...” Smiled and looked up at the clock. Fluttershy isn’t bored, just not looking forward to the next class because of the girls that will hound her with questions. She bit her lip and reached for the last cookie but stopped and pushed it to Dash instead.
RD shook her head. “It’s all yours, Fluttershy...” She could practically see the nervousness. How could Fluttershy go through life like this, seriously? “You feeling okay?”
She was quick to shake her head. “I... I insist. The last is yours.” Fluttershy began to poke patterns on the hardwood of the table, keeping her head down. “Ye-y-yeah.. I’m perfectly fine.” Sunk lower into her shoulders.
“That’s really not convincing...” Twilight’s increasingly dubious claims of sanity were more convincing, which probably said a lot.
“I just... Don’t want to go to school for a while longer, but I have to.” Looked up at her. “Those girls are the reason I’m on this... Date. But they will pester me for answers and I get overwhelmed.”
“Just tell ‘em that it’s none of their business. It’s between me and you...” RD really hated people like that. Sure, she could take it from some people, but people who clearly did it to be spiteful... well, they were dicks. Plain and simple. “They give you crap about it, tell me and I’ll come deal with ‘em.”
She wasn’t exactly sure how she would, but still!
“You... you mean that?” Tipped her head to the side and inched her head out of her shoulders. This was nice and she liked it! Dash as sweet and she didn’t feel forced into any of it. “Maybe we... should do this more often?”
“Of course I mean it!” Because dammit, RD liked Fluttershy. Quite a bit. More than enough to defend her against any idiots who tried anything. “If you wanna do things like this more often, I’m more than on board... I mean, I like you.”
Fluttershy’s cheeks turned several bright shades of pink at that admission, having to ignore the urge to hide behind her coffee cup. “Oh... Oh my goodness... I.” Squeaked and bit her lip, gulping down the long scramble of words. “I... I like you too.”
Okay, that was far too adorable. RD couldn’t help but smile. “Definitely a good reason to keep doing this sorta thing, then?”
“Definitely...” Squeaked again and took another sip of coffee.
