Who: Kasumi and Wrex
What: It's Wrex's birthday. Presents for everybody!
When: Monday Night
Where: Wrex's cabin at the Ranch
Warnings: PG-13, so much innuendo
Status: Complete
Kasumi was in a good mood. Her boyfriend-type person’s birthday was an exciting day, whether he thought so or not. When she arrived at his cabin, she had an overnight bag with a few party essentials and a large wrapped box in her backseat. There may have been a cake back there, too.
Fortunately, Alma was staying with Shepard during the week. This new arrangement meant he saw her less, but it also helped Alma adjust to being a normal girl, so it was a bittersweet sort of feeling. On the plus side, it meant he was alone.
He'd placed the Lotus flower in its pot on the kitchen table, and came to the door to answer it. He skipped past 'hello' and went straight to kissing her.
Kasumi let her bag drop onto the threshold, wrapping her arms around his shoulders and kissing him back. Forget 'Hello's; this counted as an acceptable greeting for the two of them.
"No party?" Kasumi asked when they finally broke the kiss.
"No party. I'm sure Shepard will drag me somewhere this Friday for a late party, and I'll do something with Alma on Saturday, for her sake." He smiled fondly. "I was never much for celebrating it, and if I was gonna be honest I'd admit I was hoping to just celebrate with you."
Kasumi grinned. How could she turn down that? "I have a few ideas." She handed him the overnight bag. "This goes in the bedroom," she instructed him. "And there's something else in the car."
She gave him a wink before disappearing outside again to get the cake.
He took the bag, and took it to his bedroom leaving it on the bed without trying to take a peek. He was deathly curious, but he also wanted to respect her privacy. He walked back into the living area, heading to the cabinet to get them some drinks.
This seemed like a good time to open the good stuff. He didn’t want to get her drunk, but he could use some relaxing. He was feeling unusually tense and a bit worried that the Lotus might have been too much. But it was supposed to symbolise cleaning impurities and bad blood...
Kasumi managed to carry the present inside. It wasn't terribly heavy, it was just big and awkward, even moreso with the cake ontop. She put it down gently on the counter, before picking up the cake and carrying it into the kitchen.
Wrex looked up from trying to open the bottle, and smiled. "The cake makes up for the sparkles." He tried to give her a stern look, as though he had intended not to forgive her for the sparkles, but was failing at unforgiveness. It was just too hard...and maybe a part of him liked the sparkles.
Just don't ever, ever let Shepard know that.
Kasumi smirked. "So it's okay to celebrate your birthday as long as you get cake?" she asked, grinning. Of course, that wasn't all he was going to get.
"I'm glad it's just us tonight," she confessed. There was still a little breath of relief when things seemed to be going well with them. She liked Alma and Shepard and the rest, but it was nice to have the room to breathe.
"Yes. Cake is imperative. There's no birthday without cake," Wrex said, attempting to get his fingers at the frosting on the cake, sidling up behind Kasumi and wrapping his other arm around her in order to distract her while he went after the frosting.
Kasumi chuckled, not quite distracted, but happy enough in his arms to let him get away with frosting theft. It was his birthday, after all. She lifted her face to kiss Wrex's chin line.
"You want some candles to go with that frosting?" she asked, grinning.
He smeared some frosting on Kasumi's face. "You don't have enough candles, and then I'll have to huff and puff. I wouldn't put it past you to use trick candles, either." Another smear of frosting, this time across Kasumi's nose.
Then he cleared his throat. "I uh..got you a flower. Because. I really like you." He pointed unceremoniously at the Lotus.
Before she could make an inappropriate comment about blowing things, she was being smeared with frosting. She raised a brow, her expression making clear her expectation for him to clean it up.
She turned to look at the flower, surprised. "You.. really?" She stepped forward, reaching out to touch the small petals. This would probably be more of a Kodak Moment if she wasn't covered in frosting. "Wrex, it's really pretty. Thank you."
A grin crossed Wrex's face at her reaction. "I wanted something special for you. Something pretty because you are. Navi said you'd like something like that. That it was symbolic of..purifying bad blood. Making things better." He looked a little sheepish. "I thought it was appropriate, for us. Making things better."
"Wrex, I told you that you don't have to apologize." But she was still looking at the flower and smiling. She didn't consider either of them to be very conventional, but there was something very sweet about this. Sometimes a little bit of normal was nice.
"It's really sweet." She leaned up to kiss him.
He rested his hand on the back of Kasumi's head, returning the kiss happily. The last thing either of them was, was conventional. It was a gesture meant to convey that still felt bad about the whole situation but he wanted to make it better. He'd done it as much for himself as her.
When he pulled his head back, he had frosting on his nose.
Kasumi giggled at the sight of Urdnot Wrex with frosting on his nose. "Mm, this is going to be a messy night, isn't it?"
"I brought you a present, too," Kasumi said.
A messy night? Wrex's grin became positively ecstatic. Then she mentioned present. He wiped the frosting off his nose. "A present? I thought you were my present."
Then, with the most serious Krogan face possible, added. "I'm giddy with excitement."
"Well, that too," Kasumi said, grinning. Cakes may be traditional, but cupcakes were definitely on the menu, too.
She pointed at the large, square-shaped gift on the counter. The patterned wrapping paper camouflaged the carefully hidden air holes.
Wrex walked over to the table and peered at the box, then looked at Kasumi as if asking permission to open it. He wanted to pick it up and shake it, but didn't know if it was fragile or not. Whatever it was, this was probably the best birthday he'd had since forever. "Best birthday, ever."
Shaking it would be bad! She nodded when he looked over to her. "Unwrap it!" she encouraged him.
"Okay." Wrex looked down at the package, then started to unwrap it like he was disarming a bomb. He noticed the airholes first, and got a little squinty eyed in thought. If it was something living, then it would probably be dead in a week. He was terrible with pets. Then he had the wrapping paper off, and opened the lid to peer inside.
Inside was a turtle; a Russian Tortoise, actually. He was inside an aquarium that was fully furnished with a water dish and some decoration. She had a booklet on how to care for them, too, including a 'Do's and 'Don't's list.
Kasumi stood behind him, up on her tiptoes to rest her chin on his shoulder. "For my turtle-man."
Wrex's jaw dropped. He reached in and poked the shell of the turtle in amazement. Kasumi had got him a turtle. He didn't know whether to laugh, or feel sorry for the turtle. "I really hope I don't kill it." He picked up the list of dos and don'ts, and skimmed over it. His other hand reached back to pat whatever part of Kasumi it could reach.
He found himself genuinely touched, and even a little choked up. Over a turtle.
"I'm sure you won't kill him," Kasumi said, catching his hand. "He's a Russian Tortoise. They're hardy little guys. They eat flowers and weeds and things." She imagined Alma would help him out. It seemed like something a father and daughter could bond over. She smiled. "You like him?" she asked.
"I like him." Wrex put down the list and turned to face Kasumi, threading his arms around her waist. "He looks like he could heatbutt a bigger tortoise and then go out for drinks. He's got a quad."
The man was smiling fondly, and his eyes were glistening. From turtle dust. Really.
Kasumi laughed at the image. "I could see that." A very slow headbutt. She was glad Wrex liked the turtle. She was a little worried he would be overwhelmed. It wasn't exactly good manners to get someone a pet for a present, but she was happy this seemed to be working out. This species tended to be rather friendly and social with humans, so she was pretty sure the tortoise would steal Wrex's heart at some point. "He can be a little mascot for the Ranch."
She smiled up at him and gave him a light kiss. "Any ideas for a name?"
"I'll get the kids to paint him into the signs," Wrex replied, suddenly really fond of that idea. Take the whole angry turtle thing and turn it on it's head. Pressing his forehead against Kasumi's, he replied, "Don't know yet. Could call it Shepard. Or Urdnot."
"Urdle the Turtle?" She had some vague trivia knowledge that there was a difference between turtles and tortoises, but she couldn't remember what it was, and it probably wasn't that important. Not with a name like Urdle the Turtle.
"Urdle the Turtle," Wrex repeated, looking at her with skepticism. He wasn't sure he was on board with Urdle the Turtle, but could he really turn down Kasumi's suggestion. He wasn't sure he wanted to. He looked back at the tortoise. "Urdle it is, I guess."
Kasumi grinned. She'd expected him to argue with that name a bit. It was a silly name, and it was kind of sweet that he let her get away with it. "It won't hurt my feelings if you and Alma decide to name it something different. You two should probably get the final say." And by 'you two', Kasumi really meant Alma. Sure, it was Wrex's present, but who could say No to a teenage daughter when it came to pet names?
"So. A flower and a turtle. Let's hope your gift doesn't eat mine," Kasumi smirked.
"We'll be sure to keep Urdle away from the flower." Wrex looked down at the aquarium. He wondered how big it would get. He might have some fun building it a much bigger aquarium. Maybe even an addition to the cabin. Getting his hands dirty.
He suddenly had a vision of an entire room full of Urdles and snerked. "I can't believe you got me a turtle."
His grin was practically audible.
Kasumi grinned and shrugged. "What can I say? I like turtles." It seemed as though it had been a point of insecurity for Wrex. Kasumi wanted to do what she could to turn that around.
"Good for me that you do. You have a wide range of tastes, Kasumi. Cupcakes, turtles, Grey Goose." Grand larceny. "I don't know what I'm going to do with you."
The big man kissed her lightly, then said, much to his own surprise, "Maybe take you out to dinner."
Kasumi smiled, tilting her head. "Tonight?" she asked. "But we have cake, and you just opened that wine." That probably shouldn't count as a replacement for dinner, but Kasumi wasn't always the most mature.
"Dinner does sound nice, though." She liked the idea of a proper date.
"Not tonight. Another night. Soon." He grinned, happy that she was considering the idea at all. Of course what did it mean if they were going on a proper date? He decided not to think about it.
"Tonight, wine, and cake. You can tell me how the bar is doing."
Kasumi nodded. "Soon," she agreed. She picked up her wineglass, taking a sip. That was good stuff. "Not bad." It was hard to impress a bartender, but he'd managed. Of course, it might be the atmosphere and the company.
"The bar is good. Jimmy's back, so I get more nights off." She'd spent almost two months working every night. It made for good tips, but made it hard to properly date, or do anything more than cupcakes.
"Glad to hear there. Because I want to hoard all the cupcakes to myself." Not for the first time, he was glad for all the help from Shepard, and Summers, and the other volunteers. He'd go nuts without them. He needed to do something nice for them, especially Elena. Sometimes he thought she didn't get the props she deserved.
"I might actually have time now too. Alma's all wrapped up in her girl, things are settling down at the Ranch..." Okay so he might be a bit sad about Alma. Happy for her. But sad. He still wanted to shoot Zevran
Kasumi wouldn't have any arguments about shooting Zevran. There were a couple times when Wrex was off on his walkabout that Kasumi wanted to take a shot at Zevran herself, but she knew Shepard was looking after Alma. It would've been weird if Alma's father's ex-gi--whatever Kasumi was--had stepped in. There was nothing about that situation that wasn't awkward.
"Time is good," Kasumi said, sipping her wine. "We should try to coordinate our free time, for maximum cupcake hoarding." She wrapped one hand around Wrex's waist, raising a brow. "Speaking of.."
It was over though, and at least Roy was too old for him to really step in. The boy needed someone and the one thing that Wrex could respect about Zevran was that he really did care. If Alma, who was attracted to Zevran and had had a thing for Roy was happy for him, Wrex could at least grudgingly be as well. And Shepard had shot Zevran, which made him feel better.
"I want to spend more time with..." He trailed off, feeling heat rise to his cheeks. "Whatever god likes me, I thank them."
Kasumi chuckled, taking him by the hand and leading him to the bedroom. "Time for you to unwrap your other present."
