It was with nervousness and trepidation that Carol drove to pick up Jessica to take her on their flight. She’d picked out a christmas present already, and had a very interesting talk with the shopkeep that had left her rattled and confused. She pushed the conversation out of her mind, and instead honked the horn.
Ah the flight. Why had she agreed to this again? Oh right, because she loved her best friend. She still looked nervous, even though she was going to get up in the plane. She headed out the door, grabbing her things and hopped into the car. “Hey hey. How are you?”
Carol was staring. She knew she was staring, and she told herself to cut it out. They - neither of them - were like how Lulu said they were. She forced a grin on her face, and said much more steadily than she felt, "Nervous? You don't have to be. It's perfectly safe."
Normally, she would have reached over, squeezed a hand or patted a leg. Instead, suddenly worried about that thought, she put her hand on the stick to shift the car into gear, then started to drive.
“I know it’s perfectly safe, it’s still being in the front of a plane instead of eating peanuts and drinking whiskey in the back.” She didn’t quite notice that Carol was looking at her awkwardly. Not right away, though eventually she did wonder if there was something wrong. Maybe she had something on her face?
Jess sat back in her seat, gazing out the window for a moment but everything seemed off. “Are you okay?”
"Well you could have the whiskey, but I can't." She glanced over at Jessica, forcing that smile back on her face. Jess could always read her pretty well, and she knew she was failing at keeping her feelings intact. "Yes...."
She shook her head. "No. Yes. Just a little scatterbrained. I'll be fine once we're in the air. Clear skies and clear head and all that."
Carol did finally move her hand to Jessica's leg and squeezed.
Jess blinked a little, looking confused. “Scatterbrained? About what? Are you sure you should be up in a plane while you’re.. scatterbrained?” She just didn’t want to risk either one of them if Carol wasn’t feeling up to it.
"The flying helps me think. It's my happy place." She tried to smile reassuringly, but there was some point to what her friend was saying. "..okay we'll just see how I feel when I get there."
She settled back in her chair, taking a left turn and heading towards the airport. Her mind was racing, and then shattering and then racing some more. She didn't know why she was affected by this, and normally she'd talk to Jessica about it but she wasn't sure that was a good idea. The shopkeeper had been so matter of fact about it that Carol was wondering if she was seeing something that she herself hadn’t ever thought about.
"I'm sorry. I think maybe I need some coffee, or something. I don’t know what’s gotten into me.”
Though Jess wasn’t quite convinced, clearly Carol didn’t want to talk about it. “Okay. Yeah we should get some coffee.” Then maybe later on, she could pry it out of her. Not that she wanted to push. If something was really wrong, she’d talk to Jess about it. Of course she didn’t think that the thing that was wrong was her.
“You’ll be fine, don’t worry.” She smiled over at her and patted her leg in return.
She knew she should talk about it. It was a silly thing, and she was probably overreacting. It was nothing. At least it was nothing until the leg pat and then it was something, and Carol was wondering if that was something or if she was paranoid now. She pulled into a starbucks to get some coffee from the drive-thru. "Do you want anything?"
Something was so going on. What the heck was it? Jess was going to have to figure it out. “Um.. yeah sure, I’ll have a mocha latte, thanks.” Though she wa smiling at Carol, she was also just watching her. Trying to figure out what had her on edge.
Carol nodded, ordering two mocha lattes, and then pulling up to pay and get the drinks. Once hers was in hand, she took a sip, to give her mouth something to do, then put the drink down in a drink rest.
"I..was shopping. For you for Christmas. And, well this is really funny." She laughed, the sort of nervous laugh where it wasn't really funny but more or less uncomfortable and she was trying to make it seem funny. "The lady shop owner seemed to get the wrong impression. About me. And uh.." She waggled a finger between them. "And us. Isn't that just crazy?"
Except Thor had made the same assumption. Carol took a deep breath.
Mmm coffee. Taking her coffee, she sipped it and let the hot cup warm up her hands. She looked over when it looked like Carol was finally about to tell her what was wrong. She was expecting.. well she didn’t know what she was expecting, but she wasn’t expecting that. That was what made her upset?
“She assumed we were together?” That was a little odd. It made her wonder exactly what Carol was going to get her that gave the lady that impression. “Huh.” That was all she could manage for a second. “I don’t know if it’s that outrageous. We’re together all the time. And frankly.. we’re a bit more touchy feely with each other than most friends. I mean at least I’ve never.. squeezed my friends knee before.” She shrugged a little. “It’s not the end of the world. You shouldn’t be so freaked out about it. I’m quite the catch.”
A little grin crossed over Carol's face, and she found herself laughing. "You're right. You're quite the catch."
That did seem to make some sense, and the pilot was visibly relaxing. Then she tensed again as something occurred to her. "I don't think the idea is disgusting, or anything. If I did then we wouldn’t touch like this. It's just never occurred to me before, and I didn't know how to react, or how you'd react." It wasn't like they were like that...were they? Why was it so stuffy in this car right now.
"I just know I couldn't live without you."
Jess winked at her, looking a bit pleased with herself. She was glad that Carol was relaxing. She hated to think that it was something as silly as that, that got her friend all worked up into a tizzy. “Yeah I know. It’s just second nature. Really, it’s okay. I’d definitely rather people assume that we were together than 99% of any of the men I know.” That was for sure. Yikes. “Just take it as a compliment. That’s what I do.”
She smiled and squeezed her hand. “I couldn’t live without you either. And you won’t have to. I’ll always be here.”
"You better be here." Carol found herself threading her fingers through Jessica's. She'd relaxed quite a bit, and her mind was less scattered, though no less confused. Her friend seemed to be shrugging it off, mostly, and the expression on her face only made Carol more confused, not less.
"We would be a hot couple. I guess that is a compliment. I'm sorry I freaked out. That's just a crazy thought, us a couple. Maybe two crazy cat ladies some day, but a couple?"
For Jess it just wasn’t a big deal if people thought they were together. Even if they held hands and touched each other in a way that bordered on undiscovered territory, it didn’t mean that they had to go and put some kind of label on it. She didn’t want to make her friend more confused though she wasn’t sure how to make her less so. “I will.”
She gave her hand a squeeze and smiled. “You don’t have to apologize if it’s never crossed your mind. Some things just don’t. Not all relationships have to be put into boundaries.”
Carol thought she might need a label, at some point. It felt like they'd stepped into new territory, or flown over uncharted waters. "Y..yeah. But what if there isn't a...?"
She shook her head, and tried to change the subject. "Lets get into the air. I think I'll feel a lot better once we've got some sky beneath us."
Perhaps if they ventured further into this whole thing, then labels would be needed. “But what if there isn’t a what?” she couldn’t help but be curious. Right into the air. She hoped that she wasn’t going to be doing any throwing up on this venture. “Yeah let’s get into the sky.”
Isn’t a boundary, Carol had been about to say, but she couldn't finish the sentence.
