When: November 26th
Where: Starting at AJ and Tonks’ place then out dancing
What: AJ and John’s 3rd date
Rating: PG-13
Status: Pre-Write
John was smiling as he straightened his shirt for the third time, then knocked at AJ’s door. He had chosen one of the outfits she had picked for him on their shopping trip, snazzy blue jeans and a long sleeved green polo shirt, with matching boots to go with it. He felt like he was bouncing inside, and he was eager to see her again, after the week since their last date.
He was finding himself thinking about her more and more, and every time he wondered if he was going too fast, he had only to think of her, and how she made him feel to know it didn’t matter. For good or ill, she was under his skin and in his heart. And he liked the feeling. He smiled again as he waited for her to answer the door
Tonks was sat on the couch while AJ got ready, she had watched her friend and housemate try on a few different outfits before deciding on the final one. When the knock came she bounced up and went to open the door. She had been hoping she’d be able to meet him and since AJ was still getting ready this was the perfect opportunity and she was fully prepared to take advantage of it.
Opening the door she gave the man standing there a bright smile, “Hi I ‘m Tonks” she told him, holding the door open to let him walk in, “You must be John. AJ is just finishing getting ready”
John smiled. He had wondered if he would meet this ‘Tonks’. She seemed nice, so far! He smiled at her, and stuck out a hand as he walked in, cocking his head to the side. “I am. Nice to meet you, Tonks. “
He instinctively glanced around and toward the door out of the room, thinking of AJ, which made his face soften and eyes warm. He wondered what she would wear. He drug his mind back to the moment.
“So, ah, how long have you two known each other?”
“A couple of months or so” Tonks replied approximating, “AJ posted on the net about needing a place to live and I had a spare room so we met and got on great. Luckily for me” she added with a smile. His softened expression when he looked for AJ said more about him than any background check Tonks could run, she was fairly good at body language thanks to her work.
“So I won’t ask you what your intentions are but I will warn you not to hurt her unless you want to suffer” she told him cheerfully, “I’m sure you won’t because she’s a total sweetheart but these things need to be said” she added smiling.
He smiled. “That’s awesome, that you could find each other that way.” John liked that sort of thing. It was a bit like how he had found AJ. And she him.
John chuckled at her warning, then nodded, serious. “I understand, and thank you. It’s nice that she has someone looking out for her. She deserves it. As for me... “
He looked down, cheeks heating. “I like her, a lot, and if I ever hurt her, you won't need to go looking to hurt me, I’ll already be tearing myself apart.” Silly maybe, a little over the top corny possibly, but all John and all meant.
Tonks grinned widely at his reply, yeah it was corny but she could tell he meant it and was reassured that he was a decent bloke who already cared about her friend. That, combined with her background check was enough for her to be satisfied.
“Yo, AJ” she called knowing she would be done by now, “Come save your man before I scare him. I think I’m still coming off as fairly normal right now. You guys need to go and have fun girl”
John laughed and then nodded, glancing around. “What do you do when not scaring new friends off?” His eyes danced with humor, and he was warming to this woman, AJ’s friend. “Have you lived in the area long?”
He liked knowing about people, and asked questions fairly a lot.
Tonks laughed, “I’m scaring strangers” she answered mischievously before explaining, “I’m a skip tracer and bounty hunter most of my work is for bail bondsmen. I was originally born in London but moved to California when I was three. Been in this county for about a year”
AJ came out of the bedroom, fixing her earring into place. She broke into a bright grin at the sight of John wearing the clothes that she’d picked out for him. “Hi,” she said, smiling shyly now. “Nice duds,” she added with a playful tone in her voice.
John chuckled. “A very interesting job. Glad to know there are more people out there, keeping things safe.” He nodded.
When AJ came out, he swallowed, and his cheeks heated, grinning widely. “Hello, AJ.” His voice was soft, and he stepped one step toward her, momentarily forgetting Tonks. “You look pretty incredible yourself.”
Tonks smiled to herself as she watched them, they were pretty sweet together and she was very happy for her friend. She knew AJ already liked him a lot and the feeling was obviously mutual. “I have to agree” Tonks told her, “You look awesome” She gave AJ a quick hug and a whisper that she wanted all the details the next day before giving them both a cheery “Have fun” and disappearing into her room.
AJ hugged her friend and housemate, then turned her attention to John. “Shall we, then?” She asked before stepping forward and slipping her arm through his.
John smiled, snugged her arm close, and, with a wave, he headed out to the car with her. He stole a long kiss before handing her into the car. "Hello, my beautiful AJ. "
Soon, they were zooming along.
"How have you been?"
AJ's head was spinning after the long kiss. She was blushing deeply, trying to catch up with her thoughts and emotions while she slipped into the car and pulled on her seat belt. Her heart was thundering as he pulled the car away from the curb and started off toward... wherever it was they were going dancing.
“Good. You know, Good. Thanksgiving was good.” She said, smiling over at him. “How about you?”
“It was nice. I went to the fest at Oliver Queen’s house and a few other places, and mostly wandered and enjoyed myself. I did have a hard time sleeping until I talked to a certain lady before bed, though.” His grin was warm as he glanced at her.
John had enjoyed those conversations, and he liked that they had been able to share.
“Did you get to sleep okay again?”
“I did.” AJ gave him a smile, straightening her skirt over her thighs as she settled in the seat. “Thank you for keeping me calm on the plane. I don’t really like flying, but it’s necessary when my family’s all so far away.” Being on her own in California made her feel a bit lonely, to be honest. Though, now that she had John, she was starting to feel a little less lonely.
Sliding onto the expressway, he battled through the snarl of traffic and grinned at her with warmth. “Good.” She was worth every ounce of effort and every single day of strangeness this place threw at him. “You’re welcome.”
He loved talking to her, and being around her. In fact, he often wished he could stay with her longer. But no, that was moving too fast, even as his mind and heart told him they were sure.
He blushed.
“Whenever you need me, I’ll be there.”
“Thank you, John.” AJ said, smiling shyly. She paused for a long moment, looking out at the other cars. Well, now was as good a time as any.
“So... have you ever had strange dreams?”
John paused, then blinked. “LIke what kind?” He shrugged. “I dream of fires, and of parents I can’t really see. Nothing more coherent, though. You?”
He glanced aside at her. Did she have the sort of dreams talked about online? He didn’t even know how to help.
“I’ve been having these dreams... these dreams that are so vivid... when I wake up I have memories of a completely different life.” She said, softly. “I don’t want you to think I’m insane.”
“I do not. You’re not the only person who has been having dreams like those. I don’t honestly know what to tell you about them.” He smiled softly, and one hand sought hers out for a moment, squeezing.
“Whatever else, though, I would never think you insane. You are amazingly centered.”
AJ gave him a soft smile. “Thank you. I try to be.” She returned the squeeze to his hand, then let it go so he could but both on the wheel. She didn’t want to distract him too much while he was driving.
“I’ve lived this different life for a while now. You wouldn’t believe how strange it is if I told you.”
“I’d listen, though, whatever you told me.” He grinned a little. “You’d be surprised what I might believe.” He would try, at least. Somehow. He cared about AJ, a lot. A whole lot. “And I want to know everything. I want to be a part of all of your life.”
AJ blushed deeply. “We’ll get there.” She said, gently.
John smiled at her. “I know. We’ll find our own rhythm.” he pulled out to the low road. The dance hall was ahead and he pulled them to park “Here we are...” The dance hall had good music, and a nice bar, as well.
AJ had never been here before. She pulled her seat belt off and slowly climbed out of the car, looking up at the place. “Do you come here often?” She asked him once they were together again outside the car. Then she went a little pink at how that might have sounded.
“I mean...” She went a little more pink. “What’s a classy dude like you doing in a place like this?” She asked, playfully.
“I’ve never been here before, but I hope to come more often, if I find someone who likes dancing...” He nudged her hip with his own.
Her question made his cheeks blush too. “Hoping to make a woman named AJ happy.”
AJ grinned at the bump to her hip. She gave a little nod, and looped her arm through his. “Lead the way, then, John.” She wanted to call him her John.
He led the way, in to the noise and crowd, and then down from the door and to the edge of the dance floor. “Right into it, or some courage first?” He waved a hand at the bar to one side, leaning close to her ear, his breath hot against it as he spoke..
AJ gave a little laugh, her cheeks going pink. “Courage. Definitely courage,” she said, moving with him toward the bar. It was warm in here, and loud, but AJ could feel the energy off the people already dancing. It was amazing.
John smiled at her and walked with her there. he felt energized, but more from watching her than from the crowd. He ordered a screwdriver, then raised an eyebrow at her. This would be his one drink, before he let himself sober back up. He figured at least an hour would go by here.
AJ gave a nod to the bartender, “make it two.” She said, holding up two fingers to show him she wanted the same thing John did. She sidled up to the bar, leaning against it as she turned to watch the people dancing. “...I’m going to look like a fool dancing out there.” She said, giving him a grin.
“More than likely, I will too. do you know how long it’s been since I danced? I had to look up steps last night.” He grinned at her and let one hand slide to her waist, a warm presence, the touch making him shiver.
She laughed. “You looked up steps!? And you didn’t tell me?” She said, shaking her head a little. She couldn’t help but step closer to him at the feel of his hand around her waist. His whole body was radiating warmth. “I could have studied with you.” She added, a little more quietly now at how close he was.
John smirked at her and then inhaled her scent, grinning wider. “Well, I wanted to impress you.” His voice was a little soft. “You inspire me to want to make a good impression.” He blushed then. “Next time, maybe?” His eyes glittered, looking into hers. He thought back to their phone date recently, and smiled softly again.
“You’ll have to teach me what you learned.” AJ said. She was about to say something else when the drinks arrived, and she reached for hers to take a sip. A gulp, actually. In her nerves and sheepishness she drank half the drink in one breath.
“I can do that.” He grinned. John took a long sip of hims and his eyes widened. Damn, that was... nice.
He grinned at her then gently clapped her on the back. “You okay?”
“Yeah, yes.” AJ said, turning and giving him a smile. “I am. Just...” She blushed. “I’m not used to this. To... this.” She said, lifting her hand to touch his chest. Then she turned to gulp from her glass again. Liquid courage. She needed some, for sure..
He gently pressed a kiss to one of her hands. "If you ever need to slow down or for me to back off, let me know."
He smiled softly. He liked her a lot but he didn't want her to do something she wasn't ready for.
“Okay.” AJ gave him a grin. “I will.” She finished the last of her drink, then turned to lead the way out onto the floor.
John smiled as he followed her, and sighed. wow. She was... she was hot! On the dance floor, he moved to face her and grinned, taking one of her hands, before trying to dance. He was not great, but he had rhythm.
And he’d try anything with her.
AJ wasn’t great, either. But she had an incredible sense of humor. She was laughing half the time they were on the floor, mostly at herself. But she was picking up things quickly, and the dance was becoming less awkward. Either that, or the drink was kicking in. She figured she’d need another before too long, to keep the buzz growing.
Within a few moments, he laughed too. It was too easy to laugh with her. and one song became two, became three, before he led her back off the floor and to the bar. He ordered water as they sat and ordered her a drink after asking her pleasure. One arm was looped around her and he was grinning widely. He leaned in to kiss her cheek.
“You’re amazing!”
“No, that DJ is amazing!” She cried out, giving the DJ a thumbs-up over the crowd. He didn’t see her, though, and she turned back to John with a grin. The bartender brought out her rum and coke, and she gulped that down almost as quickly as the first drink. “I love this music. And I love dancing with you.” She said, beaming. Okay, she may have been slightly tipsy.
He laughed and grinned at her and he poked her lightly. watching her down the drink, he snickered. “You are nice and soft and I like dancing with you. You are a sexy and funny drunk.” He leaned in and kissed her nose.
AJ laughed. “I have fun when I’m drunk. That makes me a funnnnny drunk.” She said, giving him a grin. The next song started, and her face lit up like a Christmas tree. “Oh, come on... I love this song!” She grabbed hold of his hand and dragged him back out onto the floor, then started to dance. She was more relaxed and loose than she’d been before.
John snerked and poked her lightly. Then he nodded and let her drag him out. Her dancing was more relaxed and he tried to match it. It was fun, seeing her enjoying herself. Especially when the next dance became a slow one... and his arms were suddenly around her.
AJ’s arms lifted to drape up and around his shoulders at the start of the slow music. She leaned forward and rested her head against his shoulder, her eyes falling closed. She was warm and fuzzy, loopy and happy.
John snuggled her close, there on the dance floor, hands around her, one up between her shoulders, the other down resting just above the curve of her rear. They danced, slow and together, and he inhaled her scent, smiling, enjoying the moment, the dance, and holding her. And when the dance ended, and there was a moment before the next one, he turned his head, and caught her lips with his. It was a slow and passionate kiss, and he was very glad he was there now, for he felt his heart pounding as they kissed.
The music was fast, even as they kissed on the dance floor. A couple of people around them started cheering, and AJ pulled away, blushing deeply. She was grinning, though. “Let’s go get another drink?” She said to John as the dancing started up around them again. It was hot and stuffy, and she felt like she needed some air. And more water. Or another alcoholic beverage.
“Sure.” he smiled and moved with he, and wave a hand at the bartender. “Water or whiskey?”” He asked Aj this while his ar was looped around her waist.
He wanted to make her smile like that, and flush like that, some more. And he liked kissing her, a lot. She made him shiver.
A lot.
AJ shrugged. “Maybe one last drink,” she said, giving him a grin. “We don’t want me plastered, now, do we?” She sidled up to the bar, one hand reaching for one of his.
“Nope. I just want you to be happy.” He smiled as he took her hand and raised it to kiss it softly. He settled to the bar next to her and snuggled close.
John was feeling happy, and liking this date. “You make me happy.”
She laced her fingers with his, gave his hand a squeeze and nodded with a smile. “You make me happy, too.” With that, she turned to rest her head against his shoulder for a moment, thinking about their phone conversation and blushing.
John squeezed her hand in return, and smiled softly and snuggled her close. His arms slid around her, and he hugged her close, warm, and nipped at her ear.
He bounced on his toes, then, with a grin, he nipped softly, at her neck, tongue swirling across her skin.
AJ gave a little shudder, breaking into a grin. She lifted her arms to drape them up and around his shoulders, cuddling close. Goosebumps rose over her shoulder and up her neck where he was teasing her.
He nibbled on her neck a little more, since her reaction was good, and his nibbles traveled up toward her ear, where hot breath hissed out. “You make me feel very intensely.” He growled the words low in her ear.
“And you make me aroused.”
He stroked hands down and gently, hesitantly, caressed her rear.
AJ gave a laugh. She couldn’t help herself. His breath tickled, his hands made her squirm, and she felt a little embarrassed at the attention. It was flattering, of course, but she wasn’t used to it. The squirming of her lower abdomen made her feel a little awkward, too. Though she liked it.
“John!” She teased him, playfully. “We’re in public!”
He groped her, then let go. “Okay. true. But I do love to make you wiggle.” He winked at her, eyes bright. He kissed her again, softly, warmly. “And I like enjoying my time with you, whatever we are doing.”
AJ laughed, returned his kiss, and then shook her head. “You’re a devil, you are.” She grinned, then took hold of his hand. “Dance floor. Again. I wanna boogie oogie oogie.”
“Dancing time! “ he walked with her out to the dance floor as a fast song started and he moved with her, letting go and just being fun. It was incredible how fun it was to dance with her and one song became two, which became three and four, and finally he led the way back off and flopped in a chair.
“Wow... I am pooped!”
AJ came along with him. Her feet were aching and she was exhausted. She sat down in the chair next to his and lifted her foot to take off her shoe and rub her toe. “I’m exhausted! Gosh, this place is fun, though.” She said, giving him a grin.
He grinned at her. “You are fun! And, well, I think we could come back here, if you like it. Every few dates, if you think you can stand to have me around?” John leaned in to kiss her, resting for a moment with his forehead against hers.
“I like it.” AJ said, giving him a smile. She returned his kiss, gently and tenderly, then gave a little nod, her forehead against his. “I think I can stand to have you around a little longer.”
‘Good. I hope so.” He snuggled her close, and just held her, thinking the day had been very, very good. “And maybe we’ll find another place or two to dance in too, just for fun.” He winked at her, liking this snuggling thing.
AJ chuckled. “That sounds like fun.” She said, then yawned. “...we um... “ She paused, eyes closed. “We should probably call it a night,” she said, softly.
“Yes.” John nodded to her and then stretched, slowly standing back. “Come on, gorgeous. I’ll take you home and kiss you goodnight, and then dream of you and dancing.” He kissed her eyelids, and her lips, tenderly, then offered her his arm.
“The night is but begun, but for us, for this, tis a close. And a new beginning.”
AJ wrapped both her arms around his, then followed him out to the car, leaning heavily against him. She was so very tired now, and on the far edge of tipsy, so now she just felt drained. She climbed into the car and gave him a smile, resting her head back against the seat.
He talked as he drove, and glanced over now and then. One time, not too long in, he glanced over and chuckled, as he saw her asleep. “Beautiful AJ.” He spent the rest of the drive in silence, smiling, and when he got to her place, lifted her carefully from the seat, settling her sleeping head on his shoulder, and smiling, carried her to her house. And in, and put her to bed.
The drive him was quiet, and he smiled even more, until he finally got home, and fell into bed, tired, but still smiling. It had been the best day ever.
FIN.
