When John arrived home, having being threatened with hospital security numerous times, he wanted to shout and scream at the injustice of it all. He knew she’d been working too hard, could see how tired she had been but he didn’t push her on it. Didn’t make her stop. A lot of John’s misery was wrapped up with guilt, if he had just done something she’d be here now, cooking pancakes and rolling her eyes at him and Cameron.
Cameron. She’d been pretty uncommunicative at the hospital yesterday and when visiting hours had arrived she’d left without a word. He knew she was dealing with everything in her own way, like he was, but part of him thought it might be that little bit easier with her than without.
He’d hated walking into that room and seeing her lying there. She’d looked so small and fragile in the stark white hospital bed, not at all like the fiery and determined woman that she was. John didn’t believe in God but he wasn’t ashamed to admit he prayed to anything and everything that would listen to bring her back, but nothing had changed and when visiting hours had ended she was still lying there unresponsive.
John hadn’t left for long, he’d come home and changed but headed back to the hospital that evening; sneaking into his mom's room to keep vigil throughout the night. He’d woken up holding her hand, neck stiff from where he’d fallen asleep while leaning on her bed. He had eluded the hospital staff so that when morning came around, as far as he knew, nobody was any the wiser that he had been there.
That was his plan for today as well, he couldn’t stay here; the house was empty and cold without his mom or Cameron. He needed to be there for her just like she’d been for him. He knew the dreams were just dreams but he also knew that the fierce protectiveness she had for him translated into this reality and he couldn’t abandon her now.
