After the visit from Detective Lin, Barbara felt somewhat surprisingly at ease so decided to go out to the library instead of staying locked away in her home like her original plan. So she changed into clothes more suited to going out, yet still more casual than her usual suits for meetings and headed to her other refuge.
As soon as she arrived she was glad she had decided to leave the house, the library had a soothing effect on her and she enjoyed the familiarity of it all. She wandered around offering help where she could, all of the library staff knew she was more hands on than most benefactors.
Cassandra had been driving herself batty trying to decipher the Book of the Champion. There had been words, names and places, and a few things she could remember from her dreams about the chantry, but not enough to make any sense of the strange book that had appeared in her home.
Desparate for answers, she'd gone to the library with photocopies of some of the pages, praying to Andraste that perhaps there was an earthly language or some sort of previous even that could help her translate it.
She wandered through the languages section.
Barbara was returning some books to their correct areas when she saw the younger woman wandering round. She hadn't seen her here before but then Barbara herself hadn't been as frequent a visitor in the last few weeks as she had been previously.
She moved onto the languages area with the last two books to return when she saw her again. Studying her for a moment she realised the look on her face was someone with a heavy burden, a look Barbara knew well. Stepping forward she smiled warmly, "Sorry to bother you but could I be of any assistance at all?" she asked.
"Oh." Cassandra turned to Barbara, giving her a tired smile, "I don't believe you'd be able to." The Spaniard's accent placed her as a foreigner, "I'm trying to identify a language, but it's a lost cause."
“Oh now that can’t be true” Barbara told her kindly, “The language section is well stocked and if we can’t locate it then there is always the computers. If you would like a hand I’m here to help, two heads are better than one or at least that’s what they say” she added.
"I've tried to search for it, but I've found nothing," Cassandra complained. "It's..well it's a little crazy, but I've dreamed of this language, and I have..pages of it, that I found. I just can't translate it."
“I’ve heard of crazier things linked to these dreams everybody seems to be having, believe me” Like your boyfriend trying breaking and entering because in his dreams he was a burglar, she thought before mentally shaking herself. “Shall we have a look at it together?”
Cassandra tilted her head, "Perhaps I am less crazy than I thought. Which is a relief....I may have found something from these dreams that make me...feel less lost than I have been all my life. Do you know any lost souls?"
“I think most people go through a time in their lives when they feel lost” Barbara replied, “For some it lasts longer than others” Barbara herself had been content and fairly happy with her life until the dreams, now there was a feeling that something was missing.
"I dreamed of something beautiful. I'm a woman of faith, but I've had no faith for a long time, until these dreams." She smiled, as though a door had been opened to her that had previously been closed, "It was like coming home."
Barbara smiled, “I’m glad to hear some good has come from these dreams” she replied kindly.
Cassandra nodded, smiling. Yes good had come, enough to greatly outweigh the bad. Enough good that she craved for the dreams to come and share more of Andraste's religion with her. This Chant of the Light.
"There's good behind every evil."
“I wish I could share your sentiments” Barbara told her, “But I’m afraid I have always struggled to believe things I cannot prove to be true” Barbara had seen too many evils in this world and the dream world to believe that people were not evil, some people were and had no good in them at all.
"I understand. What if you could see it? See the things that affirm your faith? In the dreams there is magic, and fantastical creatures." She pulled out the pages, to show Barbara, "These are pages from the book that appeared." They included drawings of what was called 'Flemeth.' She appeared to shift into a dragon.
“If I could see it and explain it then I guess I couldn’t help but believe” Barbara replied before looking at the pages, “Oh my goodness” she exclaimed, “These are amazing”
"The book seems to tell a story. I haven't dreamed of the book, or much of what it speaks to," Cassandra replied, stroking the fingers of one hand down her own arm. "Just words, bits and pieces. Something terrible happened."
“Maybe it will become clearer as you have more dreams” Barbara suggested, “If you see more of the book it may reveal more of the story. I hope whatever is revealed isn’t too terrible” she added.
"Perhaps if I understand more of it," Cassandra replied. "I could show it to you? You might find it of interest. A lot of the artwork shows battles and adventures."
“Of course” Barbara agreed readily, “I’d be honored to see it” she answered honestly.
Cassandra thought about things for a moment, then said, "Would you like to keep the photocopies?"
She didn't think there'd be much harm in it, and maybe it would ultimately help...somehow. She didn't know how it would help. But she was certain it would.
Barbara nodded, “If you’re sure that’s alright?” she replied, “I can then continue to look into it for you. I have contacts I could speak to in Britain and Paris who also work in libraries who may be able to help as well. If you’d like?”
"Thank you. I can even pay for the trouble," Cassandra replied, putting the papers into Barb's hands. She gave the woman a smile, "Thank you. Maker watch over you."
Barbara shook her head, "Thank you" she said, "But payment won't be necessary. It will be my pleasure to help you" She returned the smile and inclined her head when the woman 'blessed her' "And you" she replied.
Nodding her head, Cassandra slipped her hands into her pockets, and then headed out of the library. Perhaps answers could yet be found.
